So where do you get the syringe without someone thinking you're a junkie?
As I said, show me a pic, I'm guessing you can't

To this point you are correct, but you have now switched the topic from oily-residue dischargeMore often with the at-home sized compressors, the biggest contamination issue is moisture that gets trapped in the tank, and collects in the bottom causing rust. You may not see it immediately when you discharge air from the hose; however try tilting the compressor over in the direction where your relief valve is on the bottom and open that valve. There's a pretty good chance that if you live in an area that ever gets humid conditions, that you're going to see a nasty muddy-red spray come out.
This isn't a BS scare tactic, this is knowledge from someone who actually knows what he's talking about. While we're at it, I think it's pretty irresponsible of you to not only tell people this is a good idea, but then try to discredit someone who's making people aware that your idea could actually be harmful to them.
Great idea about flushing them out with a syringe. What if you don't have an air compressor (they're not really all that cheap) - just blow them out and let them dry for a week?
1.You might be surprised how well you can blow them out w/ your mouth.
2.Too much pressure can blow the coil diapers out of position and damage DC.
3.I'd rather hook carto up to a nebulizer than a compressor.
4.I don't know about the chemicals in canned air.

but it's cheap, completely oil-free, and even when using isopropyl alcohol, they completely dry overnight

Could you get the same effect with canned air?

1.Blowing them out with your mouth is extremely ineffective compared to the compressor.
I started out doing that, and the amount left in the carto after blowing a few out orally then following up with the compressor revealed probably 80% of what you see in the pic was still in there, absolutely no comparison, not remotely close.
This way leaves them dry enough to instantly refill and re-use, you can't come close to that trying to blow them out with your mouth, and I would think most people already know that.
2. I have cleaned and blown the same 12-15 cartos repeatedly, over and over again, I haven't so much as damaged a single one except for the one I noted in the post, and I was using extreme pressure, I was kind of 'asking for it' to happen, I was just having fun with it.
3. Great, it's certainly your choice, I don't know how long it takes to get a carto ready to use again using a nebulizer, maybe it's great.
4. Canned air is NOT a good choice, it usually contains propellants which give the can it's pressure, which can be refrigerants, NOT recommended, and there's no way to re-create the pressure applied with a compressor anyway.
Thank you for that, that is a far more reasonable way to put it.So it is possible to get oil in the air.
Maybe not likely but possible.
I think people should be aware of that.
You're not, and there always is, I always welcome innovative and creative ideas. Not trying to stir up a hornets nest.
I've used my compressor before and it does work great;
I was just a lil concerned about piston blow by.
Perhaps there are multiple ways to skin a cat.
