I started vaping using boge cartos and still use them almost 2 years later. The only difference between the regular length cartos and the xl cartos is that they are longer and hold a little more liquid. I have never noticed any difference in taste or performance given that they both work properly.
Advantages over clearomizers? For me, the boge cartos (sorry, I haven't tried any other brands) provide very good flavor and it is as good as the aspire bdc clearos I use. The advantage of the aspire clearos is that they hold more liquid and you don't have to keep adding liquid every time you use them.
pbusardo has some videos showing the inside of a carto, I think, so check out his site. He has videos on them too, as well as on clearomizers, which might explain them better if you want to know more. Hope this helped some.

So if using a tank / carto combo that would be negated?

Correct, just fill the tank when needed. You use carto's with 1 or 2 holes in them and the juice enters the carto's that way. IBTanked is a good one, but is pricy (I have one), also have Smok and an AGR, as well as some cheap ones. They all work, some are just better built.

Still new to this but It didn't take me long to figure out I'd rather actually "see" how much freaking liquid I have left rather than wait for my face to catch fire because I sucked another cartridge too dry. I am getting about 10ml use out of a $1.99, 1ml clearomizer. That comes to about 15 cents... no, 18 cents... 12 cents... That comes to just pennies a day.
