Had a long chat with my workmates kid Shane last night...smart nice guy, it's good to know the geek world will be just fine with these young up and comers, he smokes too, so there may be a new member here soon...

I got him to google/youtube the Darwin, he had a look at, and at what it did and he basically told me to buy it...at $250 it's a good deal...considering the build, the batteries, the hardware/case not to mention the microprocessor/LCD display and significant R&D that went into it...he figures unless it's built offshore and they're making thousands of them it's a break even venture at best for what is a pretty niche market.

He said it could be done with off the self components but it would be big/bulky and cost tons (and the circuit itself would also be a fairly significant draw on the batteries, which I never thought of)...apparently I completely underestimated the cost of some of the components that would be required.

He did bring up a good point in the end, contact the maker and see if they'd be interested in selling the controller as a stand alone unit (no batts/case/little swivelling connector thingy that also acts as a switch)...toss a few of the new branded "Darwin Controllers" out there into the modding community, see what comes of it..

...hmm, no harm in asking I guess...imagine a Hog mod or a RSM with a very tastefully incorporated LCD screen??? perfect old world craftsmanship meets cutting edge vape tech :2cool:...I'd drop $300 - $400 on that in a heartbeat

Again, I really didn't want to come across sounding like a Darwin salesman, in fact, I think they kinda missed the mark on their form factor...I just hate it when a plan doesn't come together:mad:

I sent this to the "Contact Us" page at Evolv.com

Would offering your controller as a "stand alone" unit (with a complete set of wiring instructions) to the modding community ever be a consideration? This isn't meant as a knock to your gear, in fact it's about as brilliant as it gets, it's just the form factor that may really be holding your sales back a bit...can you imagine an RSM Cutlass (beautifully crafted wood box mod that's currently running a vv controller) but now the optional RSM Cutlass tastefully incorporates the little LCD screen and an engraving that says "Powered by Darwin"...food for thought

They answered me back no lie, 2 hrs later with...

Hi Corey,
Great minds think alike. We've got a modders board which we hope to release in a few weeks. It will allow mod makers and modders the ability to put power regulated boards into their mods and will be available with many options. i.e. on board charging, screen, different pots or just leads, different buttons or just leads, etc. etc. Kind of an erector set for modders and best of all the base boards will start in the $25 range.

Thanks,
Brandon

Can you believe it?...this may change modding as I know it

Wish I'd seen that thread before...It is an interesting read...the two camps (vv vs. vw) are digging in and it gets a little fanboy. I do agree with craigHB that vw is a little more complex because of need to monitor 2 variables (and possibility of compounding errors) but from a pure "ease of use" point vw has to win. I've been vaping less than a month and I've already accumulated several types of attys looking for that sweet spot that works for a certain juice...I don't want to have to remember that my coconut/mango 12mg is best in that 1 atty that measured 3.1 ohm hooked to a batt that's getting a little low...I want to write on the bottle of juice "best at 6.2 watts"

I deal with ohms law enough at work, I just want to kick back with a cocktail and vape...

power monitoring chips are available (used in RF power leveling) that can sample both V and I and output a pulse string or voltage proportional to power. But that would still leave a small processor to calculate R, and a feedback loop to a boost regulator, and a display driver. Getting a board to do most of that would be nice.
