Wonder if anyone noticed this? Since I started vaping last summer I always made my juice with a base of 70% PG and 30% VG. A few weeks ago I went to a 50-50 base and now I have constant chapped lips and cold sores. So last night I made up some of my menthol with the 70-30 mix and now this morning my lips are fine. Am I the only one or is VG affecting anyone else this way? 8-o

I haven't had those symptoms, but I did get a cold sore outbreak after cutting down/quitting analogs. Cold sores are the result of a virus, so the VG can't be causing them per se. Any related cause would be the VG somehow lowering your immune system to allow a cold sore outbreak.

Canker sores, on the inside of your mouth, may be caused by something like this, and it has been reported here. Personally, I've not had any canker sores since I've started vaping.

I'm glad I saw your thread boochips. I just realized tonight that my sore mouth was getting worse not better. I tend to ignore things waaay too long. LOL I finally realized that it started when I changed from all PG to 10% VG. The other morning, after a night heavy vaping, I woke up with the roof of my mouth raw. I thought it was just because I vaped too much nic the night before. Today my mouth has really been bothering me. It's burning and I have sores on my inner lip and down the sides of my tongue. So I dripped some pure vg on my atty and vaped it. BIG mistake!! My mouth felt like it was on fire, my muscles started cramping and I got a horrible headache. That's one way to find out if you're allergic to the VG or PG... I don't recommend it though. 8-o

As soon as I changed to vaping all PG the symptoms calmed down. I still have sore muscles and an headache but it's getting better. So now I know what an allergic reaction feels like and I know what I'm allergic to.

I have the same problem. I'm glad you posted this, I was thinking I was crazy or something.
PG I am fine with, and small amounts of vg(10-20%) in my mix( I can tell it's in there even at those amounts but it's not that bad). Anything more and I can tell it's in there big time and my lips chap to the point of pain. It even involves the inside of my mouth, it "chaps/dries out" as well.
I found out the hard way with Ecopure, as much as I love the vapor and taste it's not worth the chapping.
The PG doesn't do this at all and it disappears if I go back to PG from the VG.
I think I'm going to cut my VG out altogether as well, the improved vapor just isn't worth it and really doesn't make that much of a difference really compared to the effects it has.
How weird..

Was just the opposite with me, PG was causing major sore throat, lung pain, coughing....felt like I was breathing fire. After switching to 100% VG problem went away, and have been fine ever since.
However, cold sores are not caused from dryness, they're cause by a virus in your body which are triggered by changes in normal body immunity. Any changes in stress, diet, increased or over-done vaping, winter-summer conditions can cause excessive dryness, is a very good thing to do normal maintenance like increasing water, eating and drinking more vitamin-C, all the B's and D, and increasing fiber can be beneficial to maintaining hydration, from within! Use of high-antioxidents can also be helpful.
Sometimes even a change in toothpaste can bring on mouth upsets, changing the PH of tissues. Both PG and VG are also anti-bacterial, so can cause a little change in tissue hydration. Some flavorings in the juice you use can also cause reactions due to PH changes, if you skip around experimenting with different ones you may want to take notice of how they affect you short- and long-term and desist with using the ones that can irritate vulnerable throat mouth and nasal tissues. I really am doubtful a 10% change in PG or VG could be so drastic, but everyone is different physiologically.
Facial dryness is helped with hydrating cleansers, skin creams.
For me that's a normal thing even before I started vaping.
None of us drink enough plain old water!

"Maybe I am just having some kind of reaction to the VG?"

YES!!! Me too! I have been using just PG mixes for the last 2 weeks and started a PG/VG mix about 2 days ago. I have had dryness with just the PG, and also have been drinking a LOT more water to combat it.. no biggie. Since starting the PG/VG mix tho its been horrible. My lips are chapped beyond repair and I have some sort of dermatitis (last time I had it, it was caused by extreme dryness) around my mouth area. I heard about people being allergic to the PG, I guess Im just the opposite. Its miserable (thank goodness Valentine's Day is tomorrow, since I look so LOVELY! LOL)

As far as the cold sores go, I have a friend who gets them when her lips get severely chapped or sunburned, so it just may be the drying out process which is irritating them and bringing the virus to the "surface"... i.e. the skin is stressed and reacting.

Im cleaning out all my attys and going back to the all PG mix... Ill let you know how it turns out. Glad you had luck with switching back to your old mix!

I'm still new to all this, but the liquids that i ordered with my starter kit are all PG. On the third day my tongue just got really sore and my mouth was drying out. i do not vape that much and i have been analog free for 5 days eversince i got my 801. I am glad i found this post. Very helpful! I have some 100% VG e-juice coming in this week and hopefully it will work out for me.

I really think it depends on the person. I had straight PG and I felt like crap after a few days. Now I wont descredit symptoms of quitting smoking, but in my case I know that wasnt it at all. I have been anolog free since Janurary 5th. When I started vaping last week, (and with Zero MG to start) with PG, I started to feel nausiated, canker sores and dizziness. Turn me right off. I havent vaped since...

Now I did put in an order for VG carts and will try that when it comes.

The only other thing I can think of, is that maybe the cartos were buring on the inside and I was inhaling burn filling... but that is a long shot...

This is weird but I noticed last winter that if I was getting a cold sore and I drank a bunch of Red Bull they wouldn't flare up as bad and would vanish quickly. At first I was mystified and then remembered one of my homeopathic friends always said to dose up on B Complex vitamins ... so I am in no way suggesting to guzzle a bunch of Red Bull (unless you want to) but it may help if it happens again.... hopefully it won't though! :)

Chapped lips are the result of diminished moisture in the skin on and around the lips. In most cases, chapped lips are caused by the elements. Vapor from the electronic cigarette can be one of the elements that are making your lips dry and crack. Moreover, chapped lips are always accompanied by roughness, dryness, redness, peeling, sensitivity and tenderness which is probably one of the worst feeling in the world.

On the other hand, cold sores are viral infections which cause recurrent groups of irritating, even painful blisters on the lips. This usually occurs when a person has an ongoing viral infection usually as a result of weakened immune function. But I am not sure though if the one that you have is the latter. It is best though to consult with your physician if the symptoms persist.

Hi,

I am new to vaping (just about 3 weeks). I am experiencing the same issues of dry lips, cold sores and general dehydration. I started by ordering a starter kit from "SmokeTips" using 16mg nic and in the 3 weeks I have already had 2 cold sores and feel very dehydrated. It can't be from the sudden stop of analogs because I still smoke about 5 a day.

I have 2 questions

1:What the PG to VG ratio for the standard cartridges? (The only option I have from Smoketips and Vape4 life is choosing the nicotine level and flavor).

2: Are there any vendors that allow you to order either the cartridges or juice with the option of specifying the PG to VG ratio in addition to the nicotine level and flavor?

Any Help would be appreciated.
