its worth it to go with a quality charger imo. too many things can go wrong while charging- and charging is usually the time failure occurs, if failure were to occur.

xtar VP1 is an awesome charger, best one ive used. you can get one for less than $40 if you shop around. among other great features, it can recover over-discharged batts, which can in-and-of itself pay for the charger.

Kemosabe was right, the most reported battery incidences happen during the charging phase of a battery's life. If something is likely to occur, it will be at that time.

Practice safe battery habits. Charge your batteries on a flame resistant surface: stove top, metal baking pan or pyrex dish. Never charge your batteries when out of the house or away from home. Remove batteries from the charger soon after being fully charged. Check battery voltage occassionally when coming out of your mod and when coming off the charger with a voltage meter. A battery should never become warm or hot.
