I've been trying to source cotton wick material for a bit now. After all, it's cotton, one of the most abundant materials we have in a modern society. Well, I finally came across a thread that mention butchers twine, it's food safe, unbleached and 100% cotton. Perfect, so I got some at a local grocery store, it took some hunting to find it and only after I asked for assistance . It's cheap, $4.99 for a roll of 370 inches. This might be old hat for some of you veterans, but I'm sure this will be helpful for those that are looking to rebuild their atty's.

Butchers Twine

  • Food safe
  • unbleached
  • 100% cotton
  • cheap

Check it out the next time your in the grocery store. Now, I'm off to rewick a few atty's.

I bought 650 meters for 12$ at wal-mart, says 100% cotton on it, with a rating of 4 for Medium, it doesn't say bleach or unbleach on it, you think it's safe ? I usually boil it before using it tho.

What's the burning test you talking about so I can try it?

Take some of it and approach and open flame with it, it starts to shrivel and curl away from the flame it's not 100%. Also after its been on fire and you blow it out the smoke should not smell like burning plastic or chemicals.

Looks like it's all good, it doesn't curl away from the flame at all. When burning, it's a clean burn and it smells like burnt paper. Thanks for the info!
