This is my answer to the watery world of steeping. Thrift store foot bath/massage $4.
Home Depot 30 min. incremental 24 hr. timer $5. Sand - free. Steeps great.

The vessel is about 4" deep and I have about 3" of sand installed. It's been operating 24/7 for about a month - 30 min. on, 30 min. off. Seems to be holding up. If it dies, replacement is only $4. I would only caution cat owners to monitor the sand:)
 It would give the juice a certain...twang?

As a newbie to DIY, vaping and this board (See SALUTATIONS in "New Members") this is very helpful to me. What attracted me to this board was a search for information on "steeping". Then I saw a great post on using ultrasonic cleaners w/heat. (I'd reference the thread but I don't remember exactly where it was  .) Now I see this low cost alternative and my mind is COMPLETELY blown!!! I absolutely LOVE the creativity here!!! Great schtuff!!!

Both processes raise some questions. Please forgive me if the answers can be found elsewhere, after all, this IS my first day (ha, ha) and I haven't back tracked many threads yet  .

In regard to this thread, I'll just click off my question.
Does this method have the same reduction in "Steep Time" as the ultrasonic method? (Two to Three WEEKS reduced to 2 to 3 DAYS mentioned there.)

In a related question to both threads, I learned (or thought I did) from "other sources" that "steeping" was a matter of shaking or blending/aerating your "juice" (daily) and then leaving it in a cool, dark place for days or even weeks. Both of these methods have the agitation and I get that, but heat (below 150 F.) is also mentioned. The question is, "What's up with that?"

(The whole "Steeping" thing is still somewhat of a mystery to me and I have a hand full of other questions on this subject alone but I'll refrain for now until I've had a chance to search through the "Steeping Threads". Tryin' to do my part as a good "community member" :thumb: )

Thanks in advance for the answers to the two I've asked here!

Cheers!

I can answer the 150 degree part, it's the temp at which nicotine starts to break down (as I've read in the forum).

I have been using the UC for some time now and it does work. This method looks interesting. The same principle is at work, agitation/vibration to mix, and heat to thin the vg so it mixes well. I've also used the crock pot and prefer the UC.

VonVape, I can't say which method is better, as I haven't used UC (because of the cost and the water problem), but I steep tobacco for about a week and phoo phoo blends (for my granddaughters) for three days. I just think that constant agitation for a period of time results in better blending than just sitting on a shelf with occasional shaking. Just MHO. And, welcome to ECF. Great to have you here.

what are your thoughts on steeping higher than 150*/ even if steeping doesnt involve heat without nic and then adding the nic upon bottling/usage.

Great feedback! Looks like I'll be investing in a U.C. There are several available for under $100 w/ up to a 25 minute timer & 150 F. heat and considering I have ZERO patience it would be worth twice as much to me!!!

On a side note (and not to hijack this thread) I had whipped up an "emergency batch" of 15% total flavor chocolate / caramel (60% / 40%) 2 days ago and test hit it a few hours later. YUK! Swamp Foot!!! After reading here, I took the remainder of the 15 ml. batch and shook it furiously for a couple of minutes while the hot water came up to temp in the kitchen sink. I ran the bottle under the tap, filled a small container with the hot water and let the bottle "hot tub" for awhile, then kept coming back and repeating the process every time I figured the water had cooled to room temp. Within a few hours and before I had exhausted what was in my tank, the "ROLO" flavor I was going for was already starting to come around! So, thanks to EVERYONE for their take on steeping! All of us together are smarter than any one of us alone!

KEEP INNOVATING!!!

A small suggestion...you really don't need to invest in a UC with a heater. If you fill the UC tank with the hottest
tap water (usually 120 degrees) and UC your liquids in that, the action of the UC will maintain and raise the
temp of the water and juice. UC's without the heater function are much cheaper. The only feature you gotta have is
the timer, it's a lifesaver!

I agree, my cheap UC does not have a heater, but, after maybe ten cycles the water is very warm just from the vibration alone. I find the bottles I put in after the water heats up get better results.
