Doesn't china do a lot of recycling? Might fit well if they were labeled broken items for recycling? Or would that just create a whole new set of recycling hoops to jump through? Broken research samples?

They'd probably have specific duties for recyclables. Because, yes recycling is a big business here. But not the nice clean, environmentally friendly recycling. More like melting the gold bits off of computer circuit boards and stripping copper fittings off of appliances type.

Why return them to China anyway? Is there that much value involved, or does the manufacturer insist on seeing every 'defective' item to give you credit? Or is it to research how to make them better-quality?

R&D. It's a lot easier to get problems fixed when we have the examples to show than when we have to go by a description.
