Actually for most contamination an alcohol wipe is all you need. If a contact is becoming Burnt/pitted, you will need more than a cleaning to correct.
I Say Alcohol because I have several mods with Silver plated contacts and that is all I have had to do in over a year of use to bring the Fire back into the firing buttons.
Silver oxide is actually a good conductor (unlike aluminum oxide), So harsh cleaning methods (like sanding) are not necessary.
Most of the time just a wipe down with a clean dry cloth is all that is necessary.
