Cleaning copper vein

But what did work on mine was a clear coat of polyurethane varnish as soon as i got it, before i even used it - i put 3 coats of that on it and let it dry for days.

Now it looks just the same as it ever did apart from one small bit around the firing button i missed.

If I do get a copper vein Reo, I'm thinking of going that route @supertrunker. Wouldn't the extra coats make it look glossier than normal though? Or did you use very thin coats?

yeah - it's a bit glossier, but it doesn't turn into a walnut after a month! And it means you have to varnish it before you get your greasy paws all over it! Which is why i bought the copper third (or fourth..i forget), since i did not NEED to use it.

I have never seen anyone recommend anything that can clean them after they tarnish and so the mantra is "yeah - but it adds character" - pfft! So i decided to coat mine before then is all, since i liked the finish i paid for!

I just slopped it on with a kitchen towel, but the varnish i bought, you can get in spray cans too, for thin coats.

What's the varnish you used? I just ordered a copper vein and didn't realize they tarnished like that.

Awesome! I'm glad to hear that works. My guess it works for Silver Vein too. I'll most likely go with a spray can.

Did you do any other prep-work (wash or other cleaning) before spraying it?

I'm thinking if I can do the inside too but that would take a lot more work.

I didn't realize the copper and silver vein finishes would do this before I got mine,but it is what it is and I still love my Grand.I'll have to see if I can do anything to mine,but I'm a little afraid of sealing in the oxidizing agents at this point.Oh well ,there's spare doors available at times.

I just got my copper in a trade. It's already darkened...but still beautiful.

I just washed the mod first, made sure there was no dust or fluff on it! I used Miniwax satin polyurethane, which comes in a tin or a spray can and costs about $8 from a hardware store.
