I tried hot milk today, did not work on first try. Then I boiled it for 5 minutes, still there. Then I soaked it in PGA for a hour. Now its great. I'm only sad because I ruined the last wick I made and it was a good one. Now I have one Ody full of GJ from AVE, one full of Boba's and my iAtty full of Flue Cured. I'm on an AVE kick right now.:2cool:

I don't understand why scented vaseline was used at all. What happened Imeo, did you run out of normal vaseline and used yours kids stuff? lol...

Gawd it freakin stunk!! Even the steel parts reeked of soap. Took quite a bit of effort to get rid of it. I hope the replacement ceramics don't smell like that.

Soapiness aside, the Odysseus is AWESOME! :)

Oh, well I was just going by a previous post in this thread that quoted Imeo saying that.

Initially I thought it was the manufacturers fault. So knowing that it was, does that mean the replacements will also smell? It's pretty stupid of the manufacturer to use soap on something that's so porous.

Burning did seem to be the most effective. Shame that was the last thing I tried.. lol

The steel started to smoke though, and got freakishly hot. It'll be easier to clean when the ceramic isn't in the steel piece anyway.

You can take the ceramic out of the steel "ceramic holder", just unscrew the pin at the bottom and take the nut out which is inside of the ceramic - then pull the ceramic out of the steel part. Some reported its hard to pull out the ceramic, but at my Odysseus this was very easy.

Imeo had posted that he initially thought the bad taste came from the Vaseline he used to get the ceramics to seat inside the threaded holder.

Turns out it was indeed the actual manufacturer of the ceramics process. The cooling/washing fluid that is used to keep excess heat down and remove the cut debris during the milling process was the culprit.

I agree Nature it was an unwise move on the makers part becasue as you state about the somewhat porous nature of the material, the heat from the process only served to bake in the taste and smell. Although I got mine out with boiling in milk, the easiest way is with the blue flame to burn it off/out.

Although most are familiar, blue flame is the type of heat intensity from a hand torch or a gas stove top and is blue in color. The lesser yellow flame such as a lighter simply isn't enough to burn off the remnants that were somewhat baked in at manufacture.

Imeo contacted the actual maker so we shouldn't see this on the 1500 new ones. Those should be going out with the shipment Monday which includes the upgrade/expansion kits and other parts.
