Coil Question

Hi guys!
I have an Evod Pro that I am really enjoying, however, through the hole in the coil I can see that what was once white is now dark brown/black. It doesn't really taste any different that it did before. I'm guessing it just needs replacing but I was wondering what causes the brown/black. I'm vaping 65% VG if that makes any difference. I've seen videos where you can rinse the coil out and get more use of it, is that true? Is this any reflection of what's going into my lungs? Or is it just crud building up from being burnt?

I get that it's cheap to just get another one, but my closest vape shop with the coils is quite a drive away for me and I would rather just go back when I get into town again.

The cotton in coils will discolor with use. It occurs primarily from the flavorings breaking down from the heat, essentially carmelization. Certain juices will cause this discoloration faster than others, and sweeteners are a particular cause of coil gunking. Generally you don't have to worry about it until the quality of the flavor/taste of your juice declines. That should be your signal to replace the coil. It is not an indication of stuff going into your lungs.

Generally with factory coils it's difficult if not impossible to clean them. In some cases you may be able to rewick with fresh cotton which will extend the lifespan of the coil. I've got no clue if the coils for an Evod are easy to break down and rewick, but I'm sure someone will be along who might have that info. YouTube an also be worth as search to see if someone posted a video for rewicking those coils. If you do decide to try and soak it for cleaning, you might have better luck with ethyl alcohol, easiest found as plain old cheap vodka. Generally, I've not found that to be all that successful at regenerating a dirty coil.

This is another reason why it's best to buy your coils in packs of 5, or at least more than one at a time, so when that replacement time arrives, you're not caught short. Good luck!

really sweet juices.. like my horribly addictive cotton candy I'm vaping will turn mine a brown/black within a day.. yours aren't really cleanable or repackable. rising works with certain types of coils... you could try a vodka soak and a throughal rinse with several days drying, but I doubt it would work well.

Coils are not cheap from most shops. That's half the problem. If you have to drive too, that is desperate in terms of $$.
I would mail order a few 5-packs in advance.
In reply to your worry. The gunk on the cotton or coil is not any indication at all of the cleanliness of the vapor. It'll taste burnt when it's past it's best. Cleaning most factory coils (unless you can remove the wick and dry burn the coil) is a waste of time.

Thanks everyone!
No problem. I quit recycling factory coils over 2 years ago. All that effort for a bonus 24 hours vape. Not worth it.
I get the tools out for proper rebuildable atomizers (tanks, drips, squonks) and just plug & play with factory coils. I order them from China. In the UK you'd need psychiatric help if you buy coils from shops. $35 vs $10 basically. The vape shop owners see them & e-juice as money-printing products.

I would try the vodka soak I soak mine in vodka for 24 hours then water for 24 hours and have had good luck in a year of gaping have only had 3 coils not work. Have some coils that are close to a year old. Forgot stop using them as soon as you notice less vape/flavor if you burn the cotton will not come back
