Hello all. This is my first post at ECF.

I am a complete beginner with clearomiser vaping. I have been using my new Kanger eVod for about 10 days now (standard model, 3.7v, 1.8ohm). I finally got to the point where it is time to change the coils. I found out from all the great info on the forum that you can clean them! Happy days!

Unfortunately my efforts thus far have failed. The problem I think is that I am dry burning too long and actually irreversibly damaging the wicking material in the eVod coil assembly.

Let me say what I did step-by-step and then all you nice vapor-vets can tell me where I went wrong.

1. Rinsed coil assembly under hot tap water.
2. Removed the two "flavor" wicks and patted dry with paper towel.
3a. Rinsed with boiling water from the kettle.
3b. Soaked for a bit in alcohol then rinsed.
3c. Soaked in alcohol then used the microwave boil method.
4. Dry burned - pulsing for a few seconds (smoke comes off coil), then a bit more (no more smoke), then a bit more (coils are glowing red), and even a bit more to make sure!
5a. Rinsed coil in warm water to remove any residual gunk/burnt.
5b. Microwave boiled clean.
6. Pat dry. Replace flavor wicks.
7. Vape with a horrible burnt taste.

Ok so you can see that I varied it up a bit with a few different methods that people on the forum suggest. At the end of it all I think - please correct me if I am wrong - that I permanently burnt the wicking material by dry burning too long. After it was rinsed and dried after the dry burn, there was still brown/black marks on the wick.

Is it possible to permanently burn this material??? (I have no idea what type of thread they use on the eVod coils...noob here!)
If it is, then I am simply dry burning way too long.
When do I stop dry burning? Is it immediately when the coils return to that nice red glow, or do I continue to pulse with the red glow for a bit longer?

Any help is MUCH APPRECIATED! I've tossed these 2 failed (I think failed!) coils and would like to preserve my remaining three as long as possible before buying more.

LOVE THE FORUM! :D

Don't throw them away! Learn to rebuild them I'll say! With all your cleaning efforts you could have rebuilt 5 of them in less time instead..

Luckily I didn't throw away the coil assemblies but only the burnt wicks (I used tweezers to yank the thread out from the coil). So I could go down the rebuilding route although I don't have one of those fancy gadgets that measure ohm.

Thank you for your response, daleron. How often would you suggest they be cleaned? I use primarily mint/menthol liquids so I know that speeds up the rate at which the coils gunk up. Should I clean them based on time (every few days) or by usage (every few tank refills)?

Personally I'd do it at least once a week, I think you said you went 10 days?

If you have taken the wicks out of them and all you are left with is just the coils then the resistance will remain about the same (1.8) in your case. You can dry burn them and make the coils red then wait for them to cool down and pull a little piece off a cotton ball or q-tip and roll it into a wick. Then thread it through the coils and cut them at the same length that the stock wicks were at. Prime them with juice and let them sit for a minute then vape away.

    It should look like this:

then when its time to clean just take out the cotton wick, dry burn the coils until they are red, let them cool down, rewick, prime, wait a minute, vape again!

P.s. that is a rebuilt coil I have in there so yours will probably have the coils more spaced out.

And regular cotton won't catch on fire? I suppose it wouldn't if I dry burned properly!!!

I clean mine and don't have any problems. I soak mine in hot water. Changing out the water 2 or 3 times after it cools.
I then remove the stem and seal and flovor wicks. You could give them another soaking at this point, I don't.

I pat my flavor wicks dry with a paper towel as you did. So far I have not replace any flavor wicks yet.

I blow dry the head and let it sit till it's dry.

Put the head back in the ring that it screws into, without the flavor wicks and stem.

Attach it to my battery and dry burn. Apply voltage for about 2 seconds and then blow on it to cool it.
It will take a few of these till it starts to glow. Always give it a few seconds to cool off in between burns.

After the coil glows evenly across during a 2 second blast of voltage I call it good.
The wick in the coil is made of silica I believe and doesn't burn.

Reassemble fill with juice. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and take a few pull on it without hitting the button to pull some juice into the wick. Vape away.

So far this has worked well for me and I have not burned anything.

Yes cotton will burn you must REMOVE the cotton dry burn then rewick with new cotton.

But with a standard Evod coil I don't think you can take out that silicone wick without destroying the coil unless your super careful.

I managed to get one of them out fairly easy without disturbing the wire coil. Do you know of any good guides or videos on this?
