Hi, This past weekend I started putting cotton(looks like yarn to me) in the old coils. Then I stopped doing that and decided to rebuild the whole coil then put the wick in. I wet the wicks before using and I can't pull any vapor out so I am guessing the cotton is to much. I have silica wicking stuff. I have read a few posts where they said it vaping glass  Do most use cotton or do others use silica?
Thanks for any help.

I use both cotton (like rm kelly said), put a little off a cotton ball, roll it and stick in through. It should move back and forth without moving the coil. I also use silica wicks. I don't wet the cotton, just roll the end into a tiny point and start it through.
Check YouTube for some instruction videos.

Good luck!

Wicking material is a personal preference: taste, wicking ability, ease of use. You don't vape the wick - wick is only for providing juice for the coil to vaporize.

I have used silica, cotton balls, peaches and cream yarn - walmart (100% cotton rope like), ekowool, stainless steel mesh+ other stuff. They all work

Some people have throat issues with cotton - few but some. Others detect an after taste with silica.

Most commercially made coil head assemblies for sale use silica - maybe because of its high temperature characteristics.

I prefer peaches and cream cotton rope for no added taste and easy re-wicking of coils. Just avoid the nasty dry hit (no juice in coil).

Easy enough to find the one you prefer through trial and error. Wick should make contact with inside of coil (in most cases) when wick is dry but not to tight - if to tight it will not wick properly - you would then experience the dreaded dry hit.

Hi Susan. Watch you-tube vid's, that's what I did. I was rebuilding Innokin iClear XI's before I ever started posting on forums. Check out: PBusardo, Grimm Green, Rip Trippers and others. You'll learn just about anything you need to know.:D
