The thought occurred to me yesterday that somebody like Jay Leno could have a field day with this issue.
Sometimes humor helps to bring to light the utter foolishness of some positions.
Anyone have any ties to comedians or cartoonists? I emailed King Features Syndicate, asking them to forward my message to Ray Billingsley, who draws the Curtis cartoon. For those who don't know, Curtis is a child of about 12 or so, African-American, who is constantly on his father's case to quit smoking. His father turns into a bear when he tries to quit and especially when Curtis does things like throw away his pack of cigarettes.
In my message, I explained what happens to me when I'm off nicotine, then made my pitch. Here is a partial extract from my message:
Then, in March, I started using the "electric cigarette." It works by vaporizing nicotine using a battery. There is no tobacco. No smoke. No tar. No smell. No messy ashes or butts.
I am totally off tobacco cigarettes. My lungs are so much better. No more wheezing, no more coughing up gunk! My blood pressure is even down!
To my utter astonishment and dismay, some of the groups that claim to have health as their mission want to undo all this. The American Lung Association joined with the Cancer Society, Heart Assn, and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to prevail on the FDA to take electronic cigarettes off the market!
They say that electronic cigarettes have not been proven safe and effective. I can show you the names of over 12,000 people who have signed a petition asking the FDA to keep these available. Read some of the comments. You will see story after story just like mine. People are able substitute inhaling vaporized nicotine from an electronic cigarette for some or all of their tobacco cigarettes. And like me, many are reporting improved health. Even their doctors agree! You can see the petition and the signatures at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keep-life-saving-electronic-cigarettes-available,
So we, the users, say that they ARE effective. Since we are the ones who have used them, who would know better? As for safe, unless the CDC, FDA, AMA, ALA, ACS, AHA, etc, have been telling us big fat whoppers all these years about the dangers of tobacco smoking, just about ANYTHING would be safer for us to be using instead, no?
So I am asking you, Mr. B, to take a look at the comments e-cigarette users have written. Then, if you can find it in your heart, won't you use your writing talents to help us change the hearts and minds of those who mean well, I am sure, but who will cause untold harm if they succeed in getting their way.
There are still 40+ million American smokers, many of whom would give up tobacco in an eye-blink if they knew that there is something out there that will allow them to do so without giving up being a productive, functioning, happy human being.
