The best two ways to avoid this whole thing is
A:

Linux... You would be amazed at what has become of that operating system no one has heard of in the last ten years.

B:

Partition your hard drive or buy an external drive and use it to keep ALL your install files documents.. EVERYTHING. Just use your primary drive for windows.
Then it is remarkable easy to reinstall your operating system in the event of some new virus.

Ghost is used in addition to deep freeze by admins.

Deep freeze is ghost except (coded with help of microsoft for windows) much smaller files and loads in 10 seconds, can be turned on and off with a password/reboot and is pretty much better than ghost in all ways.

Ghost is for last ditch, reinstall nor new install on clone hardware pc.,
its images are large and fairly equal to the size of the data on the drive backed up, C drive most often. Then must be burnt to dvd and are large. A very small install like 3 gigs with all data on another partion, you can burn to 1 DvD with ghost. It still takes a longer time to install 15 min vs 10 seconds for deep freeze.

Yes multi partitons work (you should all have a C: partiton with just installs and D: for storage even with a single harddrive) but ghost dvds can get so large I have 30 gigs of adobe and autodesk. Ghost is not an option for my C drive unless I burn 7 dvds to back up.
Ghost is not always an option depending on the PC user/hardware. Or if I get a HD burner I could back up my C in 1 or 2 discs.

Deep freeze is pretty much the standard now (since early 2000's), and is used along with ghost in many cases.

People who don't use out dated anti virus, but use deep freeze, have been virus free for 5-7 years.

Use Linux instead of Windows? No thanks, flight gear is glitchy I prefer FSX and thats for Windows! VMWare and Linux? No way! That'll probably not run games too well! I have used Linux for probably 10 years but stopped using a year ago, maybe its time to dual boot it again! I certainly don't feel the need to boast about having something that isn't Windows anymore and yes I got a Mac!!
