20130724_082824_resized.jpgvape.jpg Ok, So here is my juice inventory. Before I start getting into true DIY with base, nic, and flavorings, I want to try my mixology skills with pre-made juice to get a feel for flavor compatibility. I have about 60 clearomizers but I know I will have way more "recipes" I will need to try. I liked the idea about using the paint containers to make tiny batches (I actually obtained a large amount of contact lens containers my friend gives away at her office and I think they will work great, plus they close) BUT, my biggest concern is not having enough clearos to try everything (I know I don't have nearly enough) and cleaning them takes too time for this kind of project. Is there another way to test juice before you Vape it????? I tried putting a drop on my palm, rubbing it, then smelling it to get a clue to its taste. Could I actually taste a drop of liquid??? I really just want to get a clue if its good or bad. If it seems good, I would go ahead and use a clearomizer and make adjustments from there. ADVISE PLEASE!

I use one of these for testing. Stainless 2.0 Ohm Dual Coil 510-T Atomizer
Everyone has their favorite I guess. Some kind of easy to clean atty that gives good flavor. I have a few of them.

Thanks! Ill def have to look into that. I don't have a lot of experience with atomizers, Ive pretty much only used clearomizers and only the ones without the string wicks...

When they come they might feel a little greasy or slippery. I'm pretty sure that's just PG or something. I wipe them down, put 4 or 5 drops of juice into it and blow it out onto a paper towel. You'll need your own drip tip, I just use the cheap plastic ones, they don't come with one. Then I just put 4 or 5 more drops in, put the tip back on, and it's good to go.

*Some attys warn to NOT ever blow into them. Umm 357 something, I can't remember.

Almost. HH.357's instructions say to blow from thread end only and never blow from the open end.

There is a good blog post on dripping http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/the-ocelot/4005-drip-drip-drip-sound-dripping.html by Ocelot.

I like the HH.357 from Avid Vaper and the I06 from Ikenvape, but I'm a dripper and use a dripping atty full time. Any atty will get you started with testing flavors.

A few drops of plain PG vaped through an atty will clear most flavors out so they don't interfere with you next test.

Its 'food flavouring'-absolutely you can
its said that 90% of the flavours we experience are actually 'olfactory'-(smell), I put one drop of flavouring on the back of my hand and rub it around-smell it, and then taste it, I also do this with combinations of 'flavouring' just to get a guage of what goes well with what.
Just be aware-these flavourings are 'concentrated' so some will be very strong and might make your tongue nip, I lick my finger and spread the drop around on my hand to thin it out.

Ooooh, good info! Especially about the plain PG, I never would have thought about that!

The link doesn't seem to work for me - is it this one?

Yes, that's the one. Not to contradict Hoosier, who is waaaaaay more experienced in dripping than I am but...I like the 510T's for tasting. I'm not a dripper by any stretch. What I like is that they have a small amount of wick inside that wicks up the center post, not metal mesh. To each their own. :)

You won't get an accurate taste by tasting a drop of the juice, you will taste the carrier the flavoring is in - try a drop of vanilla extract to see what I mean. If you can judge by that how it will taste when the carrier is cooked out of it by the atomizer (or the oven or stove top in the case of the vanilla) then it would work, but if you just have the "Oh no, that's awful" reaction to the vanilla, tasting juice will do you no good.

Now, once you have DIY flavorings, if you want to know how they taste, I put a drop on an unsalted cranker (English Water Crackers are good for this) pop it in the toaster over for one minute then carefully chew and taste the bit I flavored. Pretty close to the effect it will have when you vape it and, it lets you see how much sweetener that flavor will need. Like cooking you lear how to adjust based on a taste that isn't right and, that will tell you what you need to add to make it good.

A word of caution when you begin using a small dripper for test tasting... which is what I did.

Soon, you will realize that the clearos you used to love are muting the flavors and then you will try the flavor on a dripper and it'll smack you in the face! Then you may start using cotton for wicks, and the flavor will improve even greater.

Soon your clearos will be collecting dust in your vape kit while you drip ALL the time!

Ask someone who knows ;)

Thanks
Geo

Good advise -- thanks guys :toast:

BlueMood - I'm gonnathat cracker method too, seems really unorthodox though!

It is but, that's what happens when a serious foodie gets into DIY e-juice - natrually it's going to land in the kitchen and, get the same treatment my food homemade extracts get. (I do my own mint and vanilla (grow mint and, order vanilla beans in bulk) Mint is easy, vanilla not so easy, you know there are 12 readily available varieties of beans, and, pods and seeds of each give different flavors of vanilla, different extract bases change it too, time, all of that.)

I love playing with flavors be it extracts, Juice, wine making, the salad, entree, whatever. That cracker test works for anything you want a true taste of that needs something cooked out of it first (like how a wine will taste in a sauce after you cook the alcohol out and concentrate the flavor.)
