Uber nub to vaping that is :)
So I ran into a guy on one of those mall-stalls while on vacation hehad the smokingeverywhere (or something like that) e-cig and I tried one - almost choked to death on the TH I must admit, but it got me curious. Came here and saw the 'don't go there' warnings. I started reading your forum about all the different kinds of e-cigs etc and was still interested. I smoke the ultra-light kind of ciggies (analogues?), about a pack a day, but I've started getting the 'morning cough' and really want to stop but seem to need that 'hand to mouth' action, that e-cigs look like they might fulfill (without the mega blast of yukky chemicals, bad smell and mess).
But I'm confused about WHAT to get. The more I read the more confused I really get.
The 510 seems to have a lot of good reviews, so maybe that would be a good buy? (I'm not into pipe-like things and would prefer something not too huge - at least to start with)
Would I get a 'basic; starter kit or a 'complete' one? (I spend lot of time at the pc, not much in transit)
Would i be well advised to buy a different battery than the one it comes with? (I read about mega something turbo battery being good)

The tastyvapors place seems also to get good reviews for liquids. Would that be a good place to buy mine at?

Yes, I need help making a decision because I have no idea what I'm doing

Thanks in advance for all help, which will be gratefully recieved, in trying to help me through the maze of products

Welcome CaptJay, you've come to the right place :). Good questions that we've all asked. I say try the 510. Some are fanatical about it, some don't like it at all, but most try at least a couple before they settle in on what they like. The kits are relatively cheap these days so give it a whirl. Best to get a starter that has at least 2 batteries and 2 atomizers to keep you going. Even better to just get 2 kits so you double everything, including the chargers. Liquids are the same. Everyones tastes are different. I usually vape unflavored, so pick one that you've seen good reviews on a get a sampler, if available. You're headed in the right direction, though. And at least you didn't get suckered into the high priced SE ecig. Wish I'd have been as smart .

I bought 2 510s from bestecigshop and 2 from heavens gifts

I would go with heavens because of the prices

I loaded up for like 80 dollars

my friend just got a smoking everywhere and its already broke... they warranty em but dang it hasnt been a week yet

I figured with 2 kits I get 4 bats, 4 attys, tons of carts, juice, and I would say a usb pass through is really a must

I like my manual battery more than an auto

Well as a fellow noob I came down to trying to decide between 510 and the KR808D-1. I personally chose the KR8 model and am very happy thus far. I started on the 24mg (that's the miligrams of nicotine) and found that it hit me a bit harder than I wanted so I'm switching to the 18mg. I smoked Marlboro short full flavors for well over a decade so that might give you an idea of the levels of nicotine you might want to consider and i smoked a minimum of a pack a day.
I chose the Kr8 simply because it's very simple. The atomizer and such is all contained in the cartridge so there's only 2 pieces. Screw them together and vape away. If you're at the computer a lot I think a pass thru would be ideal for you (Haven't used one yet but have heard great things) The pass thru basically is a constant power supply to your PV and you just pick up and puff.
As a smoker who also found himself needing that hand to mouth habit satiated I am VERY pleased with that aspect. I tried patches, gum, patches again, smoke away, inhaler, you name it. I never made it an entire day without having an analog on any of those but I have yet to even crave one since I fired up the Kr8.
I hope these insights into my introduction into vaping can help you.
Also if you will peruse the suppliers section of the forum you are likely to find some good deals on a starter kit and other supplies. Keep in mind that you might want to order a few small bottles of the juices (flavorings) just to sample and make sure you have stuff to last you so you aren't running out and tempted to grab a cig.

I bought my 510 from cignot.com. Right now what they have is the No Box deal (basically, 2 complete units, with five prefilled carts) for $35. Hunting around other retailers might get you a better deal, however, depending on what other accessories you want to throw in too - if you're at a PC much of the day, a USB passthru (direct power from your computer - saves on batteries) is nice. If you're out and about a lot, a PCC (personal carrying case - holds a spare battery, spare atty+cart, and a couple extra atties or carts, plus charges the battery when plugged into a USB port) is nice too - I have both because, hey, I bought what I figured I needed :D

Tastyvapor is also good, I'm vaping cherry from them right now. The only downside is you really want to "mix it yourself" with their doublers, for the best deal. That means dilution - I mix approximately one part 48 mg juice with two part "doubler" (0 mg juice) to get 16 mg total. The other downside is you get so much juice that you feel bad about trying a large variety of flavors. :D

Forgot to add - where would I buy one from (a 510)? So many suppliers listed and thats confusing too. (I'm in the US although British by birth)
A lot of really trustworth vendors in the suppliers section to pick from. I recommend LitecigUSA. He ships extremely fast and his prices on kits are as low as I seen. Good guy and very reliable. He also sells liquid for 50 cents a mil. so you can get samples there also :).

Great info so far so thanks muchly!
If I buy the pre-filled carts (the no-box from cignot btw looks like a great deal and also the passthru - hope Ive got these terms right lol), can i then refill those with lquids or do i buy empty carts for that - I did try and search all these questions by the way and DID read the FAQ, but although alot of what I found was helpful it didn't get rid of the confusion loop :)

No, I meant 16.

10 ml of 48 mg/ml + 20 ml of 0 mg/ml = 30 ml total fluid
All the nic comes from the 10 ml portion: 48 mg/ml x 10 ml = 480 total mg

480 total mg / 30 ml = 16 mg/ml.

12 mg would be the result of 1 part high nic and 3 parts doubler. Dilution = math = headspin, I know :D
(mg1 x ml1) + (mg2 x ml2) / (ml1 +ml2) = mg/ml
(48mg x 10ml) + (0mg x 20ml) / (10ml + 20ml) = 16.67mg/ml

Ok, you're right. Head spun clear off :D.

Carts can be refilled to some extent, but eventually the material inside the cart gets degraded and loses its ability to wick.

510 Carts can come in three basic types:
1) Prefilled - filled up with polyfill and juice, ready to simply go. All kits come with these, I believe.
2) Blank - filled with polyfill and ready to be filled with juice, but with no juice inside. I ordered a set of these, and have used three of the five so far - the nice thing is because there's no juice inside, you get a fair taste of whatever flavor your trying, and you don't have to muck about right away with cart fillers.
3) Empty - with neither juice nor filler inside - just the cartridge shape itself. I have, so far, gotten one of these with every atty I've ordered, and I've been using these lately for mods (blue foam as a substitute for polyfill). However, you can only use these "out of the box" for dripping - you have to have a wicking material inside in order to have juice actually stored inside one.

The terminology may vary, however - some might consider what I call "Blank" to be "Empty" (or vice versa)

And no worries - I also read the FAQs and some threads before I bought - but I still didn't quite understand the internals until I had one in my greedy little hands. :D

Edit: Noticed I kinda rambled there. As far as refilling the prefilled carts goes - yes, you can top them off - I got at least three to four full uses out of each one before they degraded significantly. However, it did result in some "flavor mixing."

Or, for the "so easy a caveman can do it" approach, you could get a 2-piece Vapor King with a bunch of extra cartomizers from vapor4life., and some refill liquid from TastyVpr

Messing around with those 510 cartridges, filling, cart mods, etc., was just too much hassle for me.

Messing around hopefully won't be a huge issue for me (we will see I guess...lol) becuase I used to wear contacts back in the day and they were the ones u had to clean, soak etc etc - so if they are simpler than that or on a par then I should be good. I thank you for the link though - I have also been looking at the KR8 series of 2 pieces for the reason you mention. I guess its a learning experience; I see a lot of people have several makes trying to find a brand that 'fits' them well - perhaps thats an inevitable part of all this.
Good news though - still wanting to dump the analogues.

(edit - had to shorten your links cos I can't post links yet.. :|

While I do enjoy the KR8 2 pc model, for it to be cost effective, you have to refill the carts. So in the end, not much different from the 3 pc model.

I think you're on the right track with the 510 Kit and a Passthrough.

I don't know about that. There seem to be many problems with bad and/or short-lived 510 atomizers, which isn't an issue with the KR8 models.

Well I bit the bullet and ordered some stuff from cignot - the no box 510 kit, a usb passthru and some prefilled carts (2 or 3) and some juice as well. I'll update when it arrives and I take my first baby steps - hopefully 2010 will mean the end of analogues for me!
Finegrs crossed

Capt - Good luck to you! I also got the 510 and I am happy! Eventually I can see myself getting a mod like the xhaler or chuck, but for now I am happy vaping my 510 and trying out the different liquids I purchased. You will not be disappointed.
