So I got on a quit smoking forum looking for support as today is my first day of not smoking. The results weren't so supportive and left me a bit confused.

Here is my post:

Well, here I go again. I have quit and started and quit and started and quit and started..... you get the point. I even quit for 18 months once. I hadn't really planned to quit this time. It kind of fell in my lap. My friend started using the e cig and I thought I would try it so I bought it. At first i did a little of this and a little of that. I tried to just vap one day last week and it was very bad. Horrible cravings and I gave in after eight hours. Today, I completely quit the cigs. I am vaporizing instead with the help of a patch. It is still a challenge and I am still craving but not so bad. I think I can do this. We shall see. Do I want to smoke....yes!!!! Will I smoke.....amazingly no...I will vapor.

Here is the first response:
Good for you!

But be prepared for all of the posts coming that will tell you that you are still killing yourself. I disagree, but they are coming.

Here is the second response
Here's what the FDA says about e-cigarettes:

FDA NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: July 22, 2009

FDA and Public Health Experts Warn About Electronic Cigarettes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that a laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples has found that they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze.

Electronic cigarettes, also called “e-cigarettes,” are battery-operated devices that generally contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. The electronic cigarette turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user.

These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls. In addition, these products do not contain any health warnings comparable to FDA-approved nicotine replacement products or conventional cigarettes. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people.

Public health experts expressed concern that electronic cigarettes could increase nicotine addiction and tobacco use in young people. Jonathan Winickoff, M.D., chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics tobacco Consortium and Jonathan Samet, M.D., director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California, joined Joshua Sharfstein, M.D., principal deputy commissioner of the FDA, and Matthew McKenna, M.D., director of the Office of Smoking and Health for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to discuss the potential risks associated with the use of electronic cigarettes.

“The FDA is concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public,” said Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., commissioner of food and drugs.

Because these products have not been submitted to the FDA for evaluation or approval, at this time the agency has no way of knowing, except for the limited testing it has performed, the levels of nicotine or the amounts or kinds of other chemicals that the various brands of these products deliver to the user.

The FDA’s Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis analyzed the ingredients in a small sample of cartridges from two leading brands of electronic cigarettes. In one sample, the FDA’s analyses detected diethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze that is toxic to humans, and in several other samples, the FDA analyses detected carcinogens, including nitrosamines. These tests indicate that these products contained detectable levels of known carcinogens and toxic chemicals to which users could potentially be exposed.

The FDA has been examining and detaining shipments of e-cigarettes at the border and the products it has examined thus far meet the definition of a combination drug-device product under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The FDA has been challenged regarding its jurisdiction over certain e-cigarettes in a case currently pending in federal district court. The agency is also planning additional activities to address its concerns about these products.

Hi, Doozer. And welcome to the forum. :)

You didn't specify which forum you visited previously. But the responses sound like what you might get from members or sympathizers of anti-smoking organizations, such as ASH or Tobacco Free Kids. These groups are rabid anti-vaping as well as anti-smoking. They want to allow nothing that mimics the act of smoking and all seem to have the 'quit or die' mentality. And their stance -- as well as that of the FDA -- makes no logical sense. After all, we're not smoking any more. So they should be happy. Right? One would think...

The pervading thought seems to hinge on the funding received by these groups from major pharmaceutical companies, namely Pfizer (the maker of Chantix). Since e-cigs are a threat to such products, you can imagine how they would want them banned. So just follow the money.

But anyway, welcome again. Here, you should find tons of support and a wealth of information.

I've been tobacco free for a little over 3 months now and have no intention of going back. :)

confused??? by the government? no way! lol, its the money trail........follow the money, they cant, ban this, unless they ban tobacco........or patches, same content as ejuice, or cigars etc........they, the "FDA" is between a rock and hard place on this one legally. it is already in place by the amount of attention and venture, that this ecig practice will be fought hard in the courts. the only solution by the FDA is to ban all nicotine, and that, my friend, aint gonna happen...........too much money involved in this addiction.

expect control, taxes, and legislation within five years. Hopefully by that time, I , and others, thru using this ecig practise will have quit or cut down completely so that we can just laugh at there stupid attempts to reg this industry.......

Thanks!! Feel more supported already. It was quit net. I have found them to be a good forum in the past but it seems that they don't go with the vaping well. Several hours after posting this message, I am still getting negative responses. I am a little suprised at the statement of toxic chemicals. What is e juice made of? Does anyone know?

It's amazing to me that the FDA can flood the airwaves with so much anti-ecig propoganda based on a trace amount of a single element found in one test of two manufacturer's seized products and still manage to not utter a peep about the dangers of tobacco cigarettes even though they clearly have jurisdiction over them now and years of data as well? How can they not be condeming both publicly?

I had the same experience on a so-called support network. Still got all kinds of flack even after I explained that I had a permanent problem with attention deficits whenever I gave up all nicotine. Finally I had to get assertive with one gal who did not seem to understand the concept of personal boundaries.

This was the exchange:

She said: Taking anything, whether it's a piece of plastic or a turd and putting it to your mouth and "pretending" to smoke is still practicing the addiction of smoking. It's like a junkie taking a syringe without a needle and sticking it on their arm. Or going to a brothel for a kiss. But like you said, hey, it's your life and whatever floats your boat. Don't forget your rubber ducky.

I said: Nonsense, Edith. I really don't care that it looks like a cigarette. I am not addicted to "pretending" to smoke. I am addicted to being able to remember, concentrate, think, and reason.

If it looked like an asthma inhaler and it worked, I would use it. If it looked like a pill and it worked, I would swallow it. If it looked like a bloomin' rubber ducky and petting it worked, I would pet it. The e-cigarette is the only thing I have found that allows me to NOT SMOKE TOBACCO and still be able to function normally.

The reason it works is that--for me--it provides adequate amounts of nicotine to bring the dopamine levels in my brain up to normal. Low dopamine levels can cause reduced thought processing speed, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating. Low dopamine levels can also cause anger and agression.

This could explain why a lot of people become so hostile when they quit smoking. Some even indulge in verbal abuse such as discounting, accusing and blaming, judging and criticizing, undermining, and trivializing,

I don't get why anyone is so offended by e-cigs but not by the gum, lozenges, patches, etc. I think the success rate of the e-cigs and quitting is the highest. Honestly, I've never seen the alternatives work. I've known some people who did it cold turkey, but most of them went back to smoking eventually.

I wouldn't bother with that forum myself. It's supposed to be for support and that's not what you're getting. They clearly don't want to be educated and if they did, they would already be here.

It seems ridiculous to me that people who are in support of quitting smoking would be so repulsed by a method that has worked for so many more people than other NRTs.
I guess I can understand the whole "Well those weren't around when I quit, so I had to work harder at it, therefore I am better than you" or jealousy mentality.
Some people just can't accept that there IS an easier way when they've been told all their life how difficult it is and how much they should suffer.

It's a combination, I think, of a couple of factors. They think that nicotine is what is bad in cigarettes and it's not. They are falling for the FDA's BS. They are jealous that it is easy for us this way. And they refuse to recognize that the hand to mouth thing is not a sin. Meanwhile, they chomp gum, eat candy, and snack the day away. There is no way, but their way and anyone else's way is wrong and we are, therefore, evil.

Welcome to ECF Doozer! Sorry you had such a hard time at the other place. Just delete them from your bookmarks and stay here! It's a wonderful place.

One thing worries me. Are you using a patch and vaping? If you are please be careful. I have 2 friends that used the patch and still smoked and they had heart attacks. One of them died from it. In both cases the heart attacks were contributed to using both forms of nicotine at the same time. It could just be propaganda but better safe than sorry. If you start feeling funny, get to a doctor.

There is nothing that says you can't have a cig or two while you are transitioning to vaping. It took me 3 months to totally get off the cigs and only vape. Even now I still crave one now and then so I keep a bottle of 36mg around for those times.

Welcome doozer, and congrats on your decision to become tobacco free. Pay no attention to those ignorant, closed minded twits at quit net. They are anti smoking nazi's, and god forbid you find an easier way then their way.
I would love to see how many of them are still non smokers in 1 or 2 years, compared to someone who has switched to vaping. I think we know the answer.
