Dr. Michael Siegel (The Good), wrote about menthol just yesterday:

The Rest of the Story: Tobacco News Analysis and Commentary: How Do Senator Jay Rockefeller and his Commerce Committee Colleagues (Barbara Boxer and Richard Blumenthal) Sleep at Night?

While in response to the Rockefeller hate-lie-fest hearing, there's this pull-quote:

Thus, the rest of the story is that Senator Rockefeller protected Big tobacco and helped them to continue to see the color green of dollars by voting to exempt menthol cigarettes from legislation that banned every other flavor. In other words, he sold out to Philip Morris, agreeing to this exemption that would allow Big tobacco to continue to addict America's children with flavored cigarettes.

Nearly 50% of youth smokers in the U.S. become addicted to smoking via menthol cigarettes.

Thanks for posting - some good points of course, but Siegel's ATZ is showing (not ANTZ because he's still pro-ecigs, but the anti-tobacco stuff is still hard for me to take.)

I think the better point on flavors is Rockefeller's funding the candy box :) ...for adults.

Well, her Twitter feeds are blowing up now.

Sent from my easy chair using brain waves.

Good. Because if she is Supposed to Represent the Will of the People (and Not Her Personal Agenda) ten let her Know what the People Want.

Or in this Case... Don't Want.

Berkeley, CA - Supporting the SMOKE Act and going for regulation of e-cigs!

COUNCIL MEETING JULY 8TH, 2014 : 7PM

Those familiar with the dangerous and crazy idea of Representative Jackie Speier (i.e. extending FDA regulations with prohibition of flavors and advertisements claimed to be targeting minors) should take notice. The city of Berkeley is looking to adopt a resolution to support Speier’s SMOKE Act.

The city of Berkeley is also looking to establish a City Policy to regulate the sale of e-cigs within the city by applying existing tobacco cigarette regulations to vapor products! For this they are looking to amend the Berkeley Municipal Codes on Smoking Control.

And in addition to those two issues the city is also looking to prohibit the use of vapor products in all places where smoking is currently prohibited. But with the exception of enclosed residential units in multi-unit housing.

Please contact the following people to let them know you do not support these proposals. Please be respectful. If you are aware of the SMOKE Act you may understand the importance of objecting to what the City of Berkeley would be supporting with their resolution.

City Clerk Department (510) 981-6900

Jesse Arreguin, Councilmember, District 4, (510) 981-7140

Gail Feldman, Commission Secretary, (510) 981-5400

Jane Micallef, Health, Housing and Community Services, (510) 981-5400

You can find the agenda here:

City Council: 07-08-2014 - Regular Meeting Agenda - City of Berkeley, CA

Siegel also reveals what an idjit he is on the subject of cigarettes period. The Big 3 menthol brands in the U.S. (by sales) are: Newport (Lorillard), Salem (RJR), and Kool (Brown & Williamson).

Philip Morris has the least skin in the menthol game, derp!

He makes a good point although perhaps mentioned the wrong company.

How exactly does a Democrat in the House think she's going to introduce anything? John Boehner is the only one who can bring something to the floor, and if you ain't trying to repeal "Obamacare", destroy women's reproductive rights or name a post office - your bill will never see the light of day.

So Jackie, thanks for playing Congressional LOL - you can take a seat now.

What?, are you really serious? You may want to do a little research concerning how bills are introduced and the legislative process...

Steve, squee is correct. She can introduce bills until her fingers fall off from writing them, but she will not get them scheduled for a vote or considered on the floor unless Boehner agrees to allow it. He controls the scheduling. It will just keep getting prioritized to the bottom of the pile.

No, but I really don't see the point of explaining the entire legislative process...
