#3The Great New Years Day Fly Massacre: I have to begin this one with a little back story. We Joness were Northern Virginia transplants from the suburbs to the rural beauty of Central Virginia. My parents had a choice; buy "Old Station" in Kitty Hawk and restore it from a near catastrophic hurricane or change our lives completely and buy a farm. They chose the farm, they wanted us to appreciate more than money and wants as we became adults, plus I had two horses in Manassas that we were travelling an hour a day to care for which were my life. The farm was so foreign to us, we failed at everything; farming, growing, keeping this old house from falling apart. But the one thing we succeded in was love. This old house was the place everyone wanted to be; every weekend we would have people lined up like cordwood in palets on the living room floor in front of the woodstove, sleeping, never wanting to leave. This New Years, only my mom was still with us, but it was still the flop house for everyone we loved. New Years Eve we had our "New Years Eve" which was wonderful because my mom made everything gracious and wonderful that she touched. We all stayed up all night, partied way too hard and slept where we fell. The one thing about this farm that tormented my dad was the FLIES!!! Never in the history of man has there been a place that has so many flies, I still fight them every year they are a remarkable force of nature. Anyway, we woke up on New Years Morning and looked at the ceilings and there were thousands upon thousands of little black flies!!! It was on of those Indian Summer days and the flies woke up and oh my god were there flies!!!!

With Led Zepplin blasting from the stereo and with great glee, all of the men and boys went on the "Great Fly Massacre", eight men, ranging in size from 7feet to 5feet tall in unison began attacking these flies. They would go from room to room, all of them at one time, all waving whatever weapon they could find, laughing and singing while killing flies the likes of which god has never seen. My mother, asleep on the couch, slept through the entire thing, even when all of them where standing on her couch, over her swatting like crazy. I don't think I have ever been more horrified or laughed so hard in all of my life. It truley was a sight to behold.

They never got all the flies, they died off when it got cold again, but that day will go down as my most memerable New Years Day to date.

The only blue county in Texas!
1. Okay, so, this is the story of how Santa honestly visited me in my 19th year of life. My mom was depressed and decided she just wasn't doing Christmas that year. No tree, no gifts, no nothing. So, needless to say, I was a little bummed about this. I told my co workers and friends about it and that it made me sad that we weren't going to celebrate Christmas that year and that my mom was so depressed. So, it's about a week before Christmas. I went out with friends one night and at about 2 a.m. when I got in my car to go home, I was disappointed to find that my car would not start. I tried to fiddle with it myself to no avail so I finally had to call my dad to come get me. He did, perhaps a bit grumpily since I'd woken him from a sound sleep and we were soon headed home. When we got there, we saw several odd shapes propped up against our front door and in front of it. Curious, and perhaps a bit alarmed, we cautiously approached the shapes to find a Christmas tree and a pile of gifts big enough to make anybody happy! There were gifts for every member of the family. This was done in the 20 minutes or so between my dad leaving the house, and our arrival back home. I was thrilled: not that we had "stuff" for Christmas, but that somebody took the time and effort to try and make our holiday a little brighter by sharing with us. I later questioned all of my co workers and friends but nobody ever fessed up and I never got the sense that any of them were lying or covering up their act of good will. So, the only conclusion I could come to was that Santa visited our house in the wee hours of that chilly December night and I will never forget it!

Hi guys. I'm posting this for debb. She's a supplier's associate and doesn't have permission to post in this part of the forum but I think everyone who wants should be able to enter the contest, so think of this as a regular entry.

Mommy's Last Christmas

A mother has been sick for a few months...and was not expected to make it....she was taken ill at home where her two children ages eight and four were
alone with her. Because she didn't show up at work, a call was made to her house, the little girl said her mommy wouldn't wake up.An
ambulance was called and she was taken to the hospital where she remained for over a month, while the children were cared for by their
grandmother. The mother wasn't lucid very much and sometimes didn't know her children when they visited. Thanksgiving came and went
while the mother tried to fight her losing battle. Finally the Christmas season arrived. Though the kids were excited, they wanted their
mom for Christmas. Still they went to bed filled with excitment and anticipation..On Christmas morning they awoke to find Santa had
been there....they opened their presents with eagerness, and were playing games and coloring when the door opened and in walked family
members and....Mommy!!What excitment!! She played games and colored with her children and even danced a little, and she knew her children!.. for awhile..
So for one day these kids had their mommy...one very special Christmas Day. She had to return to the hospital the next day... later Christmas night her speech began to falter...
as she kissed her children good night and tried to say "don't forget to say your prayers"..something she had always said at bedtime...a little garbled, but the kids understood...
The next day she returned to the hospital where she remained until she passed away in April....I will always remember that last Christmas with my Mom...it's been kept away in my heart
since I was eight yrs old..Funny how I remember what we got for Christmas that year...I'm in my 50's now....but still miss her very much..

Such touching stories. To Debb: I lost my Mother in 2008 and it was, and remains, so heartbreaking! That is a beautiful story. God truly blessed you with a wonderful memory and very precious gift.

Sallie, thanks so much for the contest. :) So generous of you!

Picture it, Hot Springs Arkansas 1931. An adorable little curly haired, blue eyed, 10 year old girl named Dorothy is wishing and hoping for Santa to bring her a Patsy Doll for Christmas. Dorothy is the daughter of a single mother who works any job she can get to keep food on the table and heat in the house for her three children. Well, Dorothy waits patiently for Christmas to come. Then, on Christmas Eve, she gets a toothache and gets up to tell Mommy her tooth hurts. She peeks in the living room and sees Mommy and her boyfriend setting out one toy for each of the children. Mommy is setting out a doll for Dorothy, but it isn't a Patsy Doll. So that year Dorothy learns that there is no Santa Claus and she doesn't get a Patsy Doll. In fact, she never got her Patsy Doll.

Flash forward to 2002. Dorothy is telling her granddaughter Danielle (me) the story about how, "all the little girls had Patsy Dolls. Beverly Jean had one, Marnette had one, Florence had one, all the little girls had one. But little Dorothy didn't have a Patsy Doll". So the granddaugher looks and looks and is able to find a Patsy Doll reproduction with two adorable little outfits, two cute bonnettes and even a cute little suitcase carrying case. So on Christmas Day 2002, Dorothy unwraps her Patsy Doll and is so happy she cries! 71 years later, cute little Dorothy gets her Patsy Doll.

I truly love getting people just the right gift and this has to be at the top of my list of the perfect gift. It was great to see that "little girl" so happy.

2. Well, it's not very unique but here is one of our Christmas traditions. We open our gifts on Christmas Eve and then Santa fills our stockings. So, before we open gifts we must first eat a nice, looooong, leisurely Christmas Even dinner and then we each open our first gift which is always a set of pajamas. Then we have to put on our pj's before opening the rest of our gifts. So, I always make sure that I find the most ridiculous, silly or outrageous pj's I possibly can for my husband. Why? Because there is nothing more adorable than seeing a grown man in his Superman/Cowboys and Indians/Transformers pajamas opening gifts with his daughter! Also, seeing him roll his eyes in mock indignation every time he opens a set (as if he doesn't know by now that they're going to be silly!) is priceless and definitely a highlight of our Christmas tradition!

Ok, I have been trying to figure out which horrible story to tell... I decided to do this one....

#1:

Ok, picture this, 5 year old with their very first kitty they got for their birthday(in May.) I named her Smokey for the grey color and smokey pattern she had. That cat was my best friend for months.

Now picture this, little kid and her best friend, Smokey the cat. Christmas day, 5am. I wake up to this blood curdling scream and my mother chasing my dad around the house. My cat not on her spot of the couch. I ask about my kitty only to find out the reason my mother was chasing my dad. She had handed him the turkey and asked him to wrap it in tinfoil and put it in the oven to warm up while we waited for lunch. My dad sat the turkey on the table in the backroom with the rest of the food. My very best kitty friend, jumped on the table and in 10 minutes time had eaten over half of the Christmas turkey. My mom being furious threw my cat outside and she ran away. Only to come back and sit on our doorstep everyday, same time for forever! My dad had left the side door cracked while he was outside working and when my mom came home the same cat she threw out 3 years before was curled up on her bed and she would not let my mom near her and my mom finally gave in and let me have my kitty back. I lost my kitty and got her back all because of Christmas :D

anyways.. hope you at least got a giggle.

Entry #2
Not sure what category this would go in but it is about my last holiday season with my dad when I was 15 years old.

My dad who raised me as a single parent from the time I was 8 passed away suddenly on November 16, 1992. I had asked for one thing that year for Christmas I had asked for a Nintendo and all the Super Mario games. It was the one thing I wanted but money was tight and I really did not expect to get one. When my dad died I was not even thinking about Thanksgiving or Christmas anymore that year but whether you want them to or not they still come. Thanksgiving was spent that year with me not even knowing where I would be living at or with who but it worked out that I was to live with an older cousin and stay in the house I had lived in with my dad.

Christmas Eve came and my cousin tried to cheer me up but I really just missed my dad and the things we did every holiday like stay up all night Christmas eve and bake cookies for all our friends and relatives. I went to bed early that Christmas eve and really did not expect anything in the way of presents we had not even set up a tree that year. I woke up to find not only a tree but a mountain of presents for me, but the best presents I found under that tree that year was the ones with my dads handwriting on it.

I did not even want to open them I just wanted to keep them but my cousin said I should open them that she had found them hidden in my dads closet in the back already wrapped. So I opened the biggest one first to find a brand new Nintendo system the smaller packages included a ton of games including all the Super Mario Brothers games that I had wanted so badly. I spent the rest of the day in my pajamas playing Nintendo and remembering all the fun me and my dad usually had on Christmas playing with whatever new gadget I had gotten for a present.

It has been 19 years this year since that holiday season and I still have the Nintendo and all the games I got for that Christmas it has been through 3 of my own children and now working its way through my 2 young step children. Every time I hear one of the Super Mario Themes playing I just have to smile and think of my dad for surprising me one last time. It has become my tradition on Christmas Eve to stay up all night baking cookies and spending the day on Christmas in my pajamas playing Super Mario.
