My history as I posted one year ago on ECF:
Got my first exacerbation February 2010 and learned I have COPD stage 3, mainly the emphysema-variant and that means irreversible lung damage, so no cure. Stopping further lung damage and getting/keeping the best possible condition is the only I can do. My longfunction measured as the “FEV1” was march 2010: 37-38%. I immediately stopped smoking. Started vaping march 2010.
In September 2010 my FEV1 measured 42-43%. December 2011 my FEV1 did measure 48-50%. Of course happy with that last test result, but notice; intra-individual variance of testing FEV1 can be 8% of normal FEV1, so the 48- 50% was maybe a bit of luck because of a good day. However, what could be said was that it looked I was stable now, no further extra abnormal fast deterioration of lung function and results are shown like someone who stopped smoking and my vaping has had no negative influence on my testresults et al. Test results in future would tell more. If my next 2 testresults stay between 42-50% and also no exacerbations in between, it would be more certain.

The new test result of my longfunction feb2013:
Still no exacerbations in between and my FEV1was measured today and it’s 49-52%, meaning I have indeed my life and future back. I’m now crying of happiness because of this good news.

One third of people with COPD can’t stop smoking, or start smoking again after a time. If you have COPD-stage 3 and keep on smoking, that will result in a soon and premature death after a bad “COPD-stage 4”. I thank God and the vaping world for saving me from this.

So you went from moderate stage 3 to borderline stage 2/stage 3? That's awesome!

Do you notice that you can breathe more easily when you move? Even without COPD, I sure do since I started vaping!

Yes, thats's indeed awesome!!! With lung function 37-38% (moderate stage 3) normal breathing takes a lot of yr energy and fulltime working becomes very difficult. Now witharound 50% stable lungfunction I can almost live/work as a normal healthy person.

Should I have smoked on in 2010, I now would have a lungfunction of around 30%, meaning a severely handicapped life and soon needing 15 hours a day extra oxygen + no more able to work + only a few more (not so nice) years to live.

I wish there was a way for all practioners of medicine to pass along stories like this as a wake up call to their patients who smoke. A friend of mine who used to smoke 2 PAD (like I used to) developed COPD and didn't know... other than when she went to the doctor one day because she couldn't breathe, or move around very well without coughing. (This problem had been progressing and she ignored it until that day:( )

She was immediately hospitalized for a week and then sent home and has to use an oxygen tank.
She is so depressed and seems to be wasting away...it's so very sad. (It was a wake-up call for me, along with bronchitis that I was dealing with at the time.)

So glad to here you are feeling good. Your data is wonderfully documented. Something we don't see a lot of here. This kind of post can and will help others try, and others stick to vaping just by getting a small dose of reality. Your positive outlook is also noted. There is always hope, and things could always be worse.

Thanks for shareing

I hope (and trust) a lot more stories like this will be seen in the future by practitioners of medicine and help COPD-patients like yr friend, or scare of smokers soon enough before it's to late. So very sad to hear yr friend now seems "to be wasting away". I pray she's able to stop smoking for getting improvement, gets of the oxygen and out the depression.

The story of yr friend also shows....a lot of smokers do not know they have COPD and learn they have it when their lungfunction is between 30-40% of normal.

That is wonderful news! Congrats!

Coincidentally, I sent my mother in Fla. a kit last June without her knowledge knowing she needed it. Just before she received it she found out she too was at stage 3 (moderate as well).

She has since been smoke free and also on her way to a more normal life (at 71!). Doctor even OKay'd the switch!

I'm so happy for both of you!

Hang in there SexySod! this is very encouraging and motivating for you - wishing you the best...

Thank you so much. I'm very hopeful now after I read this. It's very scary when you can't breathe. I am happy to say that I am breathing so much better since I started vaping. :D

Congratulations!!! I am so happy for you!!!
In the DID Genesis Atomizer thread are 2 others much like you. CloudWizard and Nate (DevonMoonShire?). Cloud had to use the inhaler until he switched to vaping and now his Doc visits are zilch-ish. Nate's had first stages and his lungs have improved too.

Let's bump this thread until all ex-COPD vapers show up and report in! This is such huge news.

Well, I have to say that my breathing is much improved after 2 months off of analogs. I might only have to use my Ventolin one time a week if that now. I'm so happy, you just don't know how happy I am just to be able to breathe again. I think that anyone who has asthma or COPD should DEFO switch to vaping, it's a no brainer. It works! I'm living proof of that. I have turned something that would have eventually killed me into something that is now very mild and manageable.
