Hey All!

New to the forum, noob to coil building and first post inside Coil Builds. I have made 3 coils to date, all inside a Mini Protank 2. I have an unopened bag of jumbo cotton balls, realized I did not buy organic, so I used whatever is inside my melatonin bottle. I assumed it was "healthier" cotton, but from reading other posts it could be Rayon. How can I tell for sure? (Because of not knowing what it is, I may interchange Cotton with this possible Rayon down below)

Should I even bother using the cotton balls whether straight out of the bag or boil first? Or just pickup some rayon or peaches n cream. I was advised to get peaches n cream from Walmart from a coworker as it may help me wick the coil better as the cotton/rayon I was using plus my inexperience has caused me problems squeezing it into my coils.

Problems I've had is when I get a small piece of cotton/rayon in and attempt to squeeze thro, the piece of cotton/rayon is too thick and it tugs the coil over. Reducing the amount of cotton/rayon obviously fits inside easier, yet then yielded with gurgles and I got liquid in the mouth. My third and best coil, was to wick a small amount thro and then add a "flavor wick" on top of the coil. This is the first coil I've built that I actually continued to use for a day and half now. (Other attempts I abandoned the coil and replaced with an original stock head I still had)

Anxious for help! Thanks ya'll!

It's OK if you tug the coil around... you can fix the coil after you get the wick through. You should also be able to use just a little less. This isn't something you should expect to get right first try every time... it takes some practice and each type of wick will be a bit different... i.e., cotton balls, KGD brand facial cleanser pads, Rayon rope, P&C yarn, etc...

You can use the wire method shown above for any material... you don't even have to twist up the wire like that... all you need is a strong wire with a hook. You can even use the needle threading tools (works great).

My suggestion would be to coil/wick over and over for a while to gain the experience of doing it... don't even bother testing the coil/heads... just yank them and start again. Then after a while you will notice that you are getting better... now it's time to start taste testing them... and don't be afraid to yank them apart and start over.

With KGD you can nail the perfect wick (nearly) every time. Even seasoned users might screw up 10% of the time but you'll know as soon as you pull it they your coil - here, watch :

I tend to avoid anything that's man made / synthetic / space age polymer :) I've tried most of the wicking mediums out there and even once got the urge to try the "latest rage" but I find that I like wicking simple, natural and chemical free :)

KGD is all I'll ever use :)

And you drink distilled water or rain water and pure grain alcohol, right?

I alternate between dasani and aquafina and rarely drink. When I do, I prefer shots of patron. Like I say over and over again, I can vape anything I want but by choice just feel better about vaping natural chem free stuff.

I'm no naturalist believe me. My take on it is I know there's enough harmful stuff in food I eat every day and I rarely even think about it but vaping is different - I try to minimize my exposure to anything I don't feel right about. Especially when I get such a kick AYuss vape doing so :)

If you bought it related to a thread talking about a specific melatonin bottle, it's probably Rayon. If you compare it to your cotton, it should be somewhat clear if there is a difference... but they are going to be about 90% the same either way.

I find Rayon wicks to be the best wicks. Rayon (by the way) is chemically purified ~100% cellulose, cotton is ~90% cellulose with ~10% other stuff (mostly pectin) since it's unrefined plant matter. If you have cotton balls that don't say they are organic, I wouldn't use them... at least you know the stuff from the melatonin bottle was approved to be inside with something you were going to ingest (unlike any cotton balls intended for nail polish removal etc OR KGD brand facial pads). It's not the same thing as being approved for vaping... but it's a start ;)

Are you making a dig at something you consider 'man made' or 'synthetic' or something? Please name names so the rest of us know... I try to stay away from foreign "organic" grown crops simply because I know what they get away with as "organic" "additions" to the soil, etc,. however, since we aren't eating it... should be ok. I wouldn't mind knowing where some of these farms are though in relation to any fallout plots that may be out there... is it really a concern?

So, not sure if you consider the nicotine you vape to also be 'man made' or 'synthetic' or natural chem free... given it's also harvested from a larger pool via chemistry, but it's something to think about :)

Bruh, I smoked for over 20 years. I took in a bunch of nicotine and other stuff along with it. Add in a bunch of illegal stuff and you get the picture. Stood around and continue to stand around a bunch of campfires too. Not to mention smog and other air pollutants. I also wear synthetic fibers and use deodorant.

That said, no dig on anything - people can vape whatever they want. But in my case, since vaping is a luxury after my lung cancer scare in 2012, I made a choice to TRY to inhale the purest nic base and use the most perceived natural / unprocessed wick to hold the nic while my coil vaporizes it. Most of it is "perception". Back when Nextel XC 116 came out I tried it and it never "felt" right.

Rayon - same thing. Just couldn't get right in the head about it.

I'm pretty much a freak though and many people would laugh at my vaping choices. I'm laughing right with ya, but to me, KGD just feels right - especially when mixed with the air blowing thru my post Japanese nuclear plant meltdown Hondas :)

Like I said, ones perception of the products we vape plays big into it, atleast for me it does.

I'm also convinced that we use such a small quantity of media in our wicks that none of it is really a major concern, yet I concern myself with it. Yes, I am an OCD freak though and prolly represent about .01% of vapers.

Additionally, I like stuff very simple and noob friendly cause I try to help noobs. KGD HANDS DOWN kills with ease of wicking and getting that exact same wick / result every time.

Rayon - not so much. Too finicky for me. If it yielded a better vape, I'd struggle with finding the perfect density rayon wick. But it offered me no advantage to KGD from a vape perspective so my 490 feet or so that I haven't given away just chills up there

In a closet. One day I may find a use for it but it won't be for wicking :)

I'm not sure about the 'Bruh' or the 'Afro' engineering thing from a different post... I may not be what you think ;)

Anyway,... sorry to hear about the C word scare, even a scare is enough to cause us to change our ways.

As far as your box of CC there... I see USPS boxes in there... another great use is padding... I would suggest putting it in baggies, marking them Rayon... and using them as dual-purpose padding AND free Rayon when you ship to fellow vapers :)

No disrespect intended and no ethnicity assumed or implied. I have a way of addressing nearly everyone as bro, bud, hoss, boss, dude or something. I thought I'd mix it up and use bruh because I see my son use it on his Instagram :). As for the AE deal, the term is a more politically correct way to use the term that the second word was "rigging". Most everyone I've ever known applied that term to something that someone devised themselves. Another term I've used is mcguyvering.

I am in no way racist and my family is mixed - my wife is full blooded colombiam and we raise our kids to not notice color or race. We were doing pretty good too till they started middle school :)

So I'd prefer to address you as "my friend" if that's cool :)

My friend, that is an awesome idea for the rayon as well as my CVS rolled cotton :)

My apologies if I come off as a duche - totally the opposite of my intentions. I'm usually trying to be witty and obviously fail miserably :)

Those gigantic boxes of Rayon just crack me up! I bought Sheseido cotton pads (similar to KGD) in a package about the size of a brick and have barely put a dent in it in 6 months. I grabbed a little stack of it when I got it and put the rest in a ziplock bag. I haven't touched the ziplock bag again, and I re-wick all the time.

I personally hated the peaches n creme yarn, it had a taste to me. Sterile rolled cotton was decent, Sheseido is fabulous.

Like many, I started with silica, then switched to organic cotton balls. Those were good for a while, but then I heard about the wonders of Japanese cotton and my wife got me like 6 of those bricks of KGD. She has no sense of proportion when it comes to buying stuff, but I digress. I was about half way through the first pad when I tried rayon. A couple of weeks later, I tried reverting to a KGD wick in one of my atties. I didn't even keep that wick a whole day before I went back to rayon.

Bottom line: Different people like different wick materials. There's nothing wrong with that. People should try different things and find out what works best for them and the way they vape. We didn't all smoke the same brand of cigarettes either, did we?

I'm a Rayon fan. I found cotton to be bothersome as soon as the wick went dry. There's nothing worse than inhaling burning t-shirt...especially after surviving a housefire that began in a laundry room. It brings back some horrid memories.

Anyway, with Rayon, dry wick hits are much more manageable, and easily remedied with more juice...unlike cotton, which requires you to re-wick to get rid of the taste. I also get better cloud production with Rayon than I do with cotton.

I bough one of those 500ft boxes of it and am set for the rest of my life...or until something better comes along.

I also use rayon now after trying silica and japanese cotton. To me, the cotton had a slight taste - better than the silica, but the rayon has much less (if any) of a taste. Also, it seems that the rayon lets me know much earlier than anything else when my wicks are approaching being dry.

I get my rayon by asking for a yard of it when I get my hair cut. They give it to me for free. Not that the whole box is expensive, but who needs that much?

You have to be sure that the shop is using the box marked "100% cellulose" instead of the one that's marked "100% cotton", though. Fortunately, the shop I go to uses the cellulose.
