When I first started vaping, everything was A OK. Flavors tasted great, vapor output was great.. as was my whole experience. Later on down the road, I've been experiencing rough hits accompanied by coughing so hard I get light headed. Sometimes even gets my eyes a little teary.

Tokes off my Vivi Nova Mini via the SmokTech Gripper used to taste marvelous. Now they just taste average flavor most of the times, some of the times they taste very harsh and mechanical like. This is when the coughing and scratchy throat come into play. It's the same old juice. Was it mixed differently? Is my SmokTech Gripper the culprit?

I'm at a loss.. I used to "love" the vaping experience. Now it's just an "at least it's better than cigarettes" experience.

Please Help

I'm not familiar with the vivi nova (I have one coming in the mail soon though) but I got a sore throat from some of the heavier PG ratios. Try a 50/50 PG/VG blend or 100% VG. Some people also say it is just from your body adjusting to not smoking analogs, that your lungs are getting rid of all that tar, hence the coughing.

The Vivi Nova is a beautiful thing.. definitely my tank of choice. I've already went through my detox as I've been vaping almost a month now. Happy to say I'm no longer coughing up that gunk anymore.

I'm betting you're vaping too much of the PG blend. Try something with more of a VG blend and I bet that'll take care of it.

As far as PG/VG ratios, the 2 vendors I've dealt with in the month that I've been ordering supplies, neither of them list the ratio. 1 just says that they use both ingredients and the other doesn't say absolutely anything. Looks like it may be time to change juice vendors.

I cannot tolerate but just the slightest bit of PG, myself. I won't purchase from vendors who don't list their ingredients or ratios. Some vendors won't or can't change the ratio for you, but some will if you ask them. VG is thicker consistency so you may need to thin with a few drops of distilled water. The vendor I order from has it available at 70% VG and 30% distilled water and you can add flavor shots. Because VG only juice flavor is a bit muted, for some reason.

I'm curious to know which vendor this is and if you're satisfied with the d-water blend?

Just a guess but maybe try a different head to see if its your wick/coil? Mine was great for about 2 weeks and then the flavor was not there until i swapped in a new head.

I've tried multiple heads and multiple ohm varieties.. same conclusion. I've even tried stardusts and the smoktech 1.5ohm dct.

It's hit or miss, sometimes it tastes fine and is smooth.. then sometimes it's rough and tastes like i'm sucking on a battery.

I'll definitely be giving them a shot then.. I like the fact you can completely customize your juice. Next best thing to DIY I suppose, which I will be dabbling with in the near future. Waiting on word back from my current vendor to see what their ratios are. If they're over 50%, then I will try the 50/50 blend and the one with d-water.

Sounds like you're getting 'dry hits', the wicks may be pinched and not wicking very well; or the coil may not be formed well and you may be getting hot spots.
Just a few other things to consider.

Hey Devil, I've worked with the Vivi Nova before and I know what you're talking about, there could be a few reasons as to why you're getting those dry hits, but it sounds like it's mainly due to wicking issues, may I assume that you leave your PV standing upright whenever you're not vaping? Maybe you could try resting it flat down on the table whenever you're not vaping and when you do try to hold it at a 90 degree angle when you vape to help the wicking process, the thing about the Vivi Nova is that when the juice level hits below a certain level it won't wick very well unless you do the things mentioned above. It doesnt sound like you're having issues with PG as you've been vaping for a month. I would leave my PV upright when the juice is fully refilled but the moment it reaches half I would lay it down on the table. Also because Vivi Novas wicks aren't very thick make sure you aren't vaping it at too high a voltage vs the resistance you're using, that would cause you to get dry hits because the wicking material is thin, therefore the juice it holds is very little, and that limits the power you can vape at. If you want unlimited power to vaping I would suggest doing rebuidable tanks like the Odysseus or similar rebuidable products that use silica wicks, namely the new ones out are 3.5mm thick, compared to a Vivi nova it's roughly about 9 times thicker, so you can imagine how much more juice you can vaporize at one go. There're also videos that show you how to re-wick your Vivi Nova with thicker wicks on youtube that you could try out. I would say from what I've read it's definitely not your juice problem, dry, scratchy hits are a result of either the juice isn't wicking right or the power your vaping at is too high for the amount of juice that is being held around and close to the coiled area of the wick. Hope this helps.

Public Service Announcement:

Water is not the answer for all problems vape.

What I am about to say isn't pretty, but it IS realistic.

There has been an underground study that shows that silica wicks (which are found in most commercial clearomizers) send off micofragements into your vaper that mess you up, possibly for life. I get that the following post I am about to link is by a Russian, whose English is downright terrible, but read between the lines and listen to what he is trying to show you.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/284030-wick-materials-safe-vs-dangerous.html

My best recommendation to avoid this (possibly permanent) damage is to re-wick your Vivi Nova (or other rebuildable clearomizer) with a cotton or bamboo yarn wick (after you boil them for 15 minutes). Details on how to accomplish this task can be found in the link to my blog (The Vaper's Handbook) in my signature (below) in case you need to learn how/need to see an example of such a thing being done.

Remember that the primary goal of all corporations is to earn profit, not to save your life (unless they are in the medical industry. Then the goal is to drag you along as much as possible to MAKE as much money as possible off of you for as long as you believe they are aiding you/saving your life). In the case of the funeral home industry their goal is to make as much money off of you and your family (by playing on their sensitive emotions) after you die. You get it from all fronts, so what makes people believe it doesn't happen in the vaping world too?

There have been far too little studies and far too much trust by the community at large. Think for yourself. Good luck, and vape safe.

I didn't get the sore throat thing until a few weeks in. I chalked it up to the quitting detox, it is going to take a LONG time for that stuff to work its way out. After 30 years of having it, I am sure a few days isn't going to be enough time. Check out the forum info for the symptoms to expect when quitting.

I am also thinking it could be the PG/VG thing because I get it from cartos that don't have silica wick. I got another one of these bad throats the other day after using cartos with some juice I got at 70/30. I try to keep mine 50/50 or less PG and will see if that helps.

I drink lots of water.

I was just going to link that thread until I scrolled down and saw your post.

I can attest to getting scratchy hits from the Vivi Nova. Overall, it was a fairly smooth vape but just a little scratchiness mixed in. I changed the wicks to cotton and everything is so much better. It is a much smoother and fuller vape with more flavor with a better throat hit without the scratchy throat irritation hit I was getting from the silica wicks.

Win. I am glad at least that this knowledge is out there and moving around.

Tell ya what, you may want to go to a bottom feeder.

I am one of those people who can't vape polyfill or wicks. Moved to bottom feeder, got RID of all those things standing between me and my juice. Atomizer, juice, battery , mod........that's it.

VG juice or mostly VG, thinned with distilled water.

I'm happy now.

Tracking down exactly "what" is bothering you is hard. That's why I just went in this direction

PG enhances TH and lung hit and is also an irritant in regards to the throat and lungs. Standards in the industry are 70/ 30 or 80/ 20 PG/ VG but some have a sensitivity to PG and vape a higher VG juice. Also if your Gripper is VV you may want to turn the voltage down. Some juices taste great at a low voltage while others really shine at a higher voltage. Try going from a low voltage and move up until you hit your sweet spot. I would most definitely only buy from a vendor that lists and/ or gives you a PG/ VG ratio choice.
