I, too was a heavy smoker and coughed up gunk every morning for about 3 months. It was disgusting, but I'm glad it's out. Some people expel through coughing, but not everyone. So the phrase ymmv definitely applies here.

My Wife just started coughing out tar after 2 1/2 years. Everyone is different. I think it depends on the silia damage. They do grow back.

Do you think it could still happen after 3 years of vaping? Started smoking when I was very young and 35 years later I quit a 2+ PAD habit when I started vaping. A miracle for me. But it does bother me that I never coughed anything out. I feel so much better and I'm just thankful for vaping and having the support of my family and this great vaping community.

LOL I sped up the process. After 1-2 months off analogs and I started caughing up lung-cookies one day in the shower. I bent over at the waist so my head was just over my knees and forced myself to cough (loosening/dislodging the junk) again. Over the next week during my morning shower I coughed up some pretty sizable gross lung-cookies, but was able to better get them out of my system alot faster than if I didn't. It's been well over 2 years since I have coughed anything up for any reason.

Short answer, the material that is being coughed up is caused by years of smoking. We cough it up intermittently (as smokers) all the time. Quitting smoking allows the lungs to partially heal themselves, and the body expell the foreign matter. (That is no longer being replentished daily!!! :D )

When I first quit... yucky. Some of the stuff that came up that seemed to be obviously trapped in my lungs for maybe years.

Keep in mind, coughing up phlegm occasionally is normal( as long as it's clear, yellow/green means infection like maybe you're getting a flu). I always thought I only coughed up phlegm because I smoked.
