You know, I went looking for more articles related to it, but since The Onion Article was only published about 1 hour ahead of me publishing this, I just wasn't sure if was because other headlines hadn't caught up with it yet. I'm still looking for other resources that may link to this article. I'll post anything else I may find on it- If it isn't a spoof of course.

Which if it is a spoof- then hey, even better right?

Ill update this within an hour or two if no other articles show. I'm sure then it's safe to say this loses its relevancy.

The onion is ONLY spoof content. (and one of the few sites that often make me actually burst into laughter!) Don't waste your time looking for confirmation, it's totally humor.

“We were doing pretty well there for a while, but it’s been a tough quarter for us, and combined with all the stress of the holidays, we just had to sell a few smokes,” said CVS spokesperson Elliot Steingart, who admitted that after suffering a breakdown over the busy Thanksgiving weekend and selling a few Marlboros, the company was back up to 40,000 packs a day.

C'mon, that's pretty funny!

ETA: And to the OP's comment about nicorette:

We tried selling more nicotine patches back in November, but that wasn’t cutting it. At this point, we just decided, all right, let’s let ourselves sell as many cigarettes as we want over the next few weeks to get it out of our system and then quit for good on January 1.

Get it?

Is there another source for this? The Onion is known for highly sensationalized stories and satire, so anther source to confirm would be helpful.

WOONSOCKET, RI—Ninety days after the pharmacy chain’s public announcement that it would cease carrying tobacco products, a visibly on edge and jittery CVS broke its vow and resumed selling cigarettes, sources confirmed Wednesday. “We tried selling more nicotine patches back in November, but that wasn’t cutting it. At this point, we just decided, all right, let’s let ourselves sell as many cigarettes as we want over the next few weeks to get it out of our system and then quit for good on January 1.” Steingart added that CVS customers shouldn’t be too concerned about the company as it has always sold cigarettes in moderation, except when it sells alcohol at the same time.

the satire hint is in the last line.

I went and read the article and yeah, clearly a spoof. And quite amusing. :D

CVS stopping their sales of cigarettes AND e-cigarettes shows very clearly that they've sold their soul to BP; they care NOTHING for the health of their customers, but they don't want to piss off the big guys that own their soul, oh no, that would be... sacreligious! So, no more tobacco OR e-cigs.

If they actually cared for the health of their customers, then right beside the Nicorette et al snake-oil, there would be the option that ACTUALLY WORKS for quitting/reducing smoking... e-cigs!

I can only surmise that BP has told them that there is about to be a pharmaceutical magic cure for smoking which will immediately cause all smoking to cease, and sales of useless NRT to skyrocket... magic beans, maybe. Which shows that they're gullible fools, not "caring" at all.

I'm looking forward with great anticipation to seeing news of CVS' bankruptcy. Not because I smoke, because I don't anymore, but because it's totally stupid to stop carrying a major profit-earner AND a reasonable alternative to that profit-earner, and NOT expect to go bankrupt. Idiots.

Thanks guys for the info! I'll edit the first post to remove the fictitious article. I personally dont really know much about the Onion, I found the article on google while looking for other articles related to vaping while at work. It had only been published for a short time before i had a chance to give my two cents on the matter, so I really felt like there was going to be more coverage from other news sources soon, but I can admit I put my faith in this website a little too hastily.

I would ask though that we not go too crazy about how obvious it was that this is a spoof- especially if you do read articles from actual credible news sources that are often times poorly written and full of bias! I'll know better for next time not to rely on the Onion however, thanks again!

No worries, if I didn't know what the Onion was, I might have thought it was a really humorously written article as well.

No problem and I'm glad you posted it! The thing that makes the Onion better than most is the reality of how they write it to conform with a 'regular news story'. Those not familiar with the Onion may very well not know the difference - which is why it is so good. And you're not the first person to post an Onion piece in a forum thinking it was real news.
