Aloha, everyone!
I understand both points of view perfectly. I don't generally wash and reuse, and 4-5 ml of e-liquid is all I'm willing to put through a carto. But there are ways to keep them performing better and longer.
One is to buy quality cartomizers. I am very happy with my Turbos from VaporNine (kr8), SLB 510, and 4081 (SmokeStik-expensive, Good Prophets-reasonable). The two last ones have an inner coil like an atty, not a rigid wire like kr8s, and this design seems to be more burn resistant. I always open them up before I use them to inspect the inside and to make sure the inner air flow tube is centered and the filler is saturated but not overfilled.
The e-liquid selection is also critical in assuring that your carto will last. I found that high-quality, light colored juices vaporize cleanly without clogging the cartos (or atties) prematurely. I had great success with Nhaler's, Vapor Station's and Halo's juices (but Halo is just outrageously expensive, IMO). The Backwoods Brew also sounds very promising. There are other suppliers, but I can only vouch for those mentioned above. Be very careful with all the crazy "bakery" and "dessert" flavors; they tend to contain a lot of additives, sweeteners, oils and colorings. Those tend to leave a lot of unvaporized residue on the heating coil and in the filler, thus contributing to early deterioration of the cartomizer.
Refill early, refill often, don't overvape, and if you have to wash, make sure the filler is completely dry before refilling.
Good luck!
