I woke up today feeling awful. My sinuses hurt. My lungs hurt. My chest feels tight. I'm coughing. I'm tired. I just feel terrible. I thought it must be the vaping, maybe a sensitivity to PG, but then I found this on nicotine withdrawal.

Physical withdrawal from nicotine is temporary, but it can be uncomfortable while it lasts. "Quitter's flu" is a term used to describe this phase of smoking cessation because nicotine withdrawal symptoms often mimic a cold or a mild case of the flu. Symptoms include:

  • Cravings to smoke
  • Irritable, cranky
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Constipation, gas, stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore tongue and/or gums
  • Postnasal drip

I'm posting this in case others have a similar reaction. Don't give up on vaping if you feel sick at first. It might be withdrawal.

The first few days to week are not very much fun for many. It gets better. The second day after I started vaping, I woke up with the worst cough I had ever had and I use to get strep throat every year at Thanksgiving as a kid. I had never had a "smoker's cough". I started researching and that is pretty much what I came up with. Also, make sure you are drinking lots of water (it really helps). I also went through several boxes of popsicles - yes, the cough for me was that bad (plus, I think my son had "a few"). Stick with it!

Just some additional information. I've been drinking loads of water and because I wasn't feeling too good yesterday, I vaped much less. I thought maybe the symptoms were because I was doing it too much. That didn't make sense though because the vaping never made me feel jittery or dizzy.

I was feeling so bad now, that I just went outside and had an analog. I'm already feeling better and got dizzy like it was my first cig. So I'd say I'm probably doing it too little if anything. I did order up some VG based liquids. We'll just have to see if I'm still feeling bad from the vaping in a few more days and if the VG makes it better.

Tobacco leaving your system can cause of like symptoms too. Phlegm sore throat insomnia, what i like to call "captain crunch mouth" when the roof of your mouth is tender ...
I had a lot of this going on too just drink lots of water you should feel better in a few days. There's lots of toxins leaving your body and lots of abused and singed tissues trying to heal

@ Stormlark What strength nic are you using? I started with 18-24 mg/ml, which was plenty for me - some need more, some less. Don't worry if you need a few cigs to get through. I managed to stop almost immediately, but it is not the same for everyone. At this point - count the analogs you are NOT smoking. Also, after years of smoking, the little tiny hairs on your throat (they act like little filters) have been destroyed. They start to regenerate pretty quickly and this was the cause of my cough and throat scratchiness. Good luck!

Also, there are many chemicals in analogs and your body is also detoxing from all of those as well.

From classwife's post linking the health forum, I found an incredibly helpful thread.

List of Symptoms When Quitting Tabacoo/Changing to E-cigs

Maybe this could be stickied in the New Member's forum? I haven't been around long enough to know how often new members ask about this topic, or whether others are better at finding the information than I was.

Somewhere out there
I also went thru the quitters flu for about 10 days- 2 weeks. I had terrible mouth ulcers too, but I hung with it and worked thru the quit period. I also had bad skin breakouts, that went away. So it is tough but but worth the hard spots to give up analogs. My hardest part was the screaming cravings that came every so often to have an analog. But I told my brain I didn't want an analog I wanted to vape! LOL Now after 8 mos I hardly get any cravings at all and I love vaping :) For a security blanket I have a frozen pack of cigs in the freezer, but honestly thinking of smoking one makes me ill feeling! LOL I would rather vape. bnrk

similar here, stopped cold last xmas, got the quitter flu to a point where i got back on analogs just to...get better.

shame.

as soon as i tried a colleague e-cig, i hugged him, ordered some with 16 mg PG, VG, and 50/50, and on the day of delivery, never looked back.

2 months now, lovin it, of course i pfefered some flavor to others.

I didn't experience any of these symptoms. But then again I vaped and smoked for 3 months before I was comfortable enough (with my setups and juice) to finally quit cigarettes. I see many here that quit smoking the first day they get their PVs but I couldn't. I had to research and try this and that. I had to know that when I did put down the cigarettes, I had enough supplies and knowledge to support me enough that I didn't need to pick up another cigarette. I didn't rush myself or put any pressure on myself. I gradually cut back to where the last couple weeks that I smoked.. I only had one at night and one in the morning... then down to just that one in the morning. I had to get to where vaping was more enjoyable than smoking. Now that I've mastered tanks.. it's easier too :D

I couldn't imagine smoking an actual cigarette now!
