I'm not sure if that's your position, but here's how it looks from "Up-north". I'll speak for just myself, many others may agree or not, but I for one was absolutely overjoyed to see an intelligent, caring person elected to the presidency of the US. It appears that every "good" thing he was trying to do was derailed by people who could not get over the fact that he was black. Now, as I've stated before, I have an imperfect understanding of US history. It just makes me sad that his advisors have had to point him in directions he probably doesn't want to go. No wonder he's so grey so soon.

As someone who has struggled with smoking, I would hazard a guess that he (if provided with facts) would be a strong supporter of vaping.

Even though through our media, you'd think differently, but there's only a small faction (...../National Socialist-types) that care that our President is black, other than the people who voted for him for that reason alone. More care about what his policies are, rather than his skin color. Same with a possible woman president, or a Hispanic. If it ends up that Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz is President, there will be no mention in the major news media about their race - it will be all about their politics. If there is criticism, Fox News, for example, will not make the point (as main stream media has done with Obama) that race is a factor.

And... not much of what Obama has been 'derailed'. As far as transforming America, he's been pretty successful. His main advisor, Valerie Jarrett, who some say is the real President, has done a stellar job in bringing that about.

So I'm not sure what to make of that - again from an "outside" perspective It appeared as if he was trying to help make life better for people who were at a a serious disadvantage. I honestly want to understand what was actually going on.

So as not to hijack this thread, please feel free to PM me. I really do want to understand.

Basically, it wasn't the intent of our gov't as it was formed to 'make life better for people who are at a serious disadvantage'. It was to uphold the natural rights of individuals equally before the law* and not benefit one class over another. At the start, there were sad exceptions to that, that were corrected decades later. There would have been no "United States" otherwise. Whether that would have been good or bad, is up for discussion, but that was the case then - a practice (slavery and secondary status for women) that was a holdover from English colonialism, which existed at the time, in a much smaller form, in Canada even.

*not to bring total equality of every aspect of human life - that's impossible. But before the law, individuals in the US should be treated equal. Unfortunately, that concept has not always been upheld, but that is how it was originally conceived and written into law. Any further discussion will go to PM.

The birthers and those who claimed he was a Muslim jumped on him early before he had time to impact much policy. Even though they are a minority, they are certainly a vocal group (and our media tends to focus and propagate sensational stories rather than deliver news).

You mean he isn't a Muslim? So I guess there's no nationwide Sharia law then? What about the Islamic No Go Zones? Are they real? I'm wondering about the FEMA death camps now too... don't tell me they don't exist either? I don't see how he can't just do whatever he wants as president since he's taken all your guns and allowed the homosexuals to round up all the christians to be put into concentration camps so there's no one around to fight back against the terrorists sneaking in through the Mexico border. Right?

Or have the Republicans been lying all this time?

The 'birther' idea was started by Hillary Clinton supporters in an anonymous email which was tracked back and widely acknowledged as the beginning of the birther idea.

Barack Obama citizenship conspiracy theories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Origins of the claims

During the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential primaries, anonymous e-mails from supporters of Hillary Clinton surfaced that questioned Obama's citizenship in an attempt to revive Clinton's faltering primary election campaign. These and numerous other chain e-mails during the subsequent presidential election circulated false rumors about Obama's origin, religion and birth certificate. [25] [26]

That theory first emerged in the spring of 2008, as Clinton supporters circulated an anonymous email questioning Obama’s citizenship.

“Barack Obama’s mother was living in Kenya with his Arab-African father late in her pregnancy. She was not allowed to travel by plane then, so Barack Obama was born there and his mother then took him to Hawaii to register his birth,” asserted one chain email that surfaced on the urban legend site Snopes.com in April 2008.

This didn't help either:

Every presidential office resident will change over time. I'm surprised that the last two were two term presidents. We need a leader with insight and a true love for America. Being president is not necessarily about succumbing to the demands of the world. It's about gaining strength for your country against those who are building strength for their own country.

The term America First has merit. When America is strong, the world benefits. We've floundered for too many years.

Vaping is suffering from money issues. Big Tobacco is still paying off the tobacco settlement money over time. States have borrowed money against future payments from tobacco companies, so they are polarized against anything that lowers tobacco sales. Tobacco sales are being reduced by those who quit and by those who vape. It's not about health, but about money for the states. Vaping isn't part of the settlement and the states get no money from Vapers. Vaping reduces tobacco sales and that's not good for for future settlement payments to the states. They need those tobacco settlement payments to pay off the loans they made.
