So almost 3 weeks smoke free. Nearly a month and I plan to celebrate just a bit.

I started a new job, one for an electronics retailer, local. One of the perks is that employees can buy scratch & dent older high end electronics very very cheap.

So I'm looking at a top of the line center channel that retails now for $400, for $35.
Or....

I could buy a new mod, or tank for around the same money.

What would you but? (As if I don't know...)

Well, I have a box full of mods and tanks so the decision would be easy for me.

I don't know what that center channel thing is but, if I had the chance to buy something I really wanted/needed for 1/10th the going price, I'd jump on it. That's why I frequent thrift stores. I usually don't buy anything but find great deals once in awhile.

Wicked good stereo equipment. Believe me... auto audiophiles have cases of shinyitis that would make us all blush.

Assuming a PAD habit, you've not spent @ $120 on cigarettes. Buy both and you're still $50 ahead ;)

Congrats!

OK, I thought it sounded like stereo equipment.

I used to be into that sort of stuff back in the 70s.

A good center speaker in a surround/video setting is really important. BUT, it should match the timbre of your L&R fronts, otherwise it'll be hard to dial in satisfactorily. Not saying it can't be done, but I prefer to match across the front. The sides and rear are more forgiving with that stuff.

As to which to buy, how important is surround sound for you? A phantom center with quality L&R speakers can offer excellent performance. Me? I'd buy both and maybe sell my blood to cover the extra purchase.

And yes, shinyitis with audio/video stuff AND vaping is a killer combo on your wallet. Actually it's hard to even afford a wallet with those going on.

Still thinking. That center sounds fantastic. Eventually will replace left right as well. We pay pennies on the dollar for that stuff but it's first come first serve.

Been eyeing a few RTAs that if like to try. Have fuse Clapton coming to attempt first coils on. I don't spend a lot since it's be first attempt. Tried wicking my BBB rebuildable but didn't go so well. Too much cotton.

jfcooley, how often does something like that come around at your work? If you are vaping happy right now and the audio equipment is really rare, sounds like you might do better to buy it now, and save your next mod for 3 months out. They'll still be there, and probably the ones you are eying may even drop in price.

If you know the chance for another center will come around in a bit and you are desperately craving a mod or don't have a backup, go for the mod. I'm quite thankful I know nothing about electronics and my husband does, as we seem to have a more than adequate stereo system and always have, and it's Bluetooth or something?? I don't ask the husband what he spends on his equipment and blue tooth is somewhat of a hazy concept to me still, but it's seeming to work out fine... :) If this is your one chance to own something this discounted for the year, it would be hard to pass up.

With that said, only you can decide.... I bought a guitar at one month in if I'm recalling correctly. I didn't necessarily forgo a mod at that time either, but things have slowed down quite a bit for me now. Heh.

It's essentially a top of the line center from about 3 years ago, clearance they are still $398, Amazon $450ish.

Think that's what I'm going to do, it's an amazing (and amazingly huge) speaker.

Besides, may be a better RTA in 2-3 months.

Thank you suprtkr, that may do it, I found something along the same line at Fastek that gives more info about the product. I have the box built, next is to put a light bulb in and see how much heat it generates.
I was thinking of using an immersible element in a water bath for forced juice steeping. A small bilge pump should do for water circulation, and I was thinking of a power stirrer system using some of those cheap plastic gears you can buy on eBay and a sewing machine motor for power. Most of those motors come pre-wired with the foot pedal, and all the pedals have a bolt underneath them to adjust for maximum speed. So remove the bolt, drill a hole above it in the pedal, add a longer bolt with a wing nut and presto! speed control. Hang the stir rods and the motor from a wood frame above the steeping tank and Bob's your bloody uncle. A regular old plastic dish washing tub should work for the bath, and ought to hold 6- 500ml Erlenmeyer flasks easily, with plenty of room between them for water. Add some clamps for the flask necks, tie 'em down to the stirrer frame and have at it. The only expensive part is the stirring paddles-- the chemically inert ones are iniquitously expensive from chemical supply houses-- but that's nothing a man with some stainless rod, a pair of pliers and some imagination can't fix, right?

Now all I need is to find my roundtuit...

Actually aquarium supplies do sell water pumps, not the air type but an impeller to move water. A crock pot is good for heating water but it uses a lo med and hi and probably wants to boil the water. A crock pot plugged into a probe type temp controller may work. I'm thinking of warming up 3 or 4 60 ml bottles to 130 F.
