Man, I have never had a flu shot - but this season is really testing me

My voice has disappeared from all the crud and I can't even look at my Pv without inducing a coughing fit. :( The sad irony is, I can actually taste this time, those few foods mushy enough to get past the scratchy throat that is. Sigh.

I hope everyone in here is doing better today! My Deejstuff is steeping away - I'll get there and I'm sure it will all be worth the wait!! :)

Good Afternoon Everybody,
And happy birthday to a great president and a great man, Mr. Zombie Lincoln.

Hey deej,
Are you still planning something for tomorrow? Or were you too back logged from the illness?

I prefer to think of him as a vampire slayer. :D

The people with the most need of flu shots are children, old people, people with compromised immune systems and people with compromised respiratory systems such as smokers and ex-smokers. It won't protect you against every bug out there -- the epidemiologists have to decide almost a year in advance which strains are going to be the most widespread if they are to get the vaccines ready in time -- but it definitely improves your odds.

Feel better Dolphins & Deej (and anyone else who got hit.)

That was a good movie. A lot better than I thought it would be.

Since he is dead now, he must be a zombie vampire hunter.

Now there's a movie idea. A zombie that only eats vampire brains.

It's just a shame that blood suckers were ruined by the books and movies that shall not be named. Leave your teen dramas where they belong, in the trash, and quit ruining the fantasy genre. I just hope that no one makes an overly popular sci-fi love story crapfest.

On a better note, I started reading The Wheel Of Time massive series of books last year. I'm now on the 10th book and man is it good. I wish someone would make a movie of these but there are just too many books to even attempt it. It started out very Tolkienesque with a journey and fighting the dark one, etc. but grew into it's own massively different formula with so many fractions fighting against each other. I love it.

I found out about these books because I was reading another great fantasy trilogy, The Mistborn Trilogy. The writer, Brandon Sanderson, took over writing The Wheel Of Time series when Robert Jordan died before he could finish it. In the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson made this amazing world and unique magic system using metals that were drank and burned internally. Different metal equaled different effects. The way he made the story twist and turn made me really enjoy reading it.

So when I looked for more books by Brandon I found The Wheel Of Time. Then I realized that there where tons of books in the series and thought "Well if I start reading them I'm going to be reading them for probably over a year." I'm glad I started though because the story is incredibly awesome.

Anyway, just ranting about books for the sake of conversation, even if it is with myself.

This could be a mistake, but...

Xanth?

I remember thinking about reading those in high school but I thought that they seemed too childish. Which is just stupid to me now. As I grew older I realized that a good book is a good book no matter what the genre or labels might say. I've probably missed out on a lot of good reads with my past idiotic way of thinking.

Why would it be a mistake? Is there some sort of controversy about them?

Also are they all an ongoing series or are they all stand alone stories in the same base world?

The Xanth Trilogy (he's working on #38 now... some trilogy) can be read stand-alone successfully, but reading them in order does give you background into the land and recurring characters. I think Piers Anthony (the author) does a decent enough job of giving background on the recurring so that you don't get lost, though.

The funnest thing with Xanth (for me) is that once you get past the first few books, the puns really start rolling in. Piers started developing a database of reader-submitted puns, and strove to use as many of them as he could in any given book. He always lists them in the Author's Notes at the back.

Piers has a mind even dirtier than mine (which is saying something), and a bit of that peeks through... but not in an overbearing way.

I've read most of the Xanth series... I turn to that when I want something I can laugh at but still be engaged in the characters. I've also read his Pornucopia series and his Mode series.

I've also read the 1st book in the Geoddessey series (The Isle of Woman) which I thought as a very interesting take on human/societal evolution.

hmmm... I've always proclaimed Robert Heinlein as my favorite author. I may need to reexamine that position...

deej you read a lot. When do you find the time?!

I don't read near as much now as I used to. I'm a quick reader. Not a speed reader, just quick.

Now it's usually when I'm trying to wind down I can grab a chapter or three. Unless the bug grabs my interest right away, then I usually end up finishing it off and regretting it because I've gotten zero sleep.

I'm not sure I've read any Heinlein other than Stranger in a Strange Land. What's your favorite?

I've tried to get into Terry Pratchett novels as they were recommended by a fellow Doug Adams fan, but it doesn't seem to be taking.

It's really tough for me to choose a favorite Heinlein. A lot really depends on my mood, and although I did enjoy Stranger in a Strange Land, I don't count it among my top five. JOB, Friday, The Number of the Beast, The Cat Who Walked through Walls and Methuselah really grabbed me. Interestingly enough, the concept of Fair Witness from Stranger in a Strange Land I was able to get introduced into the quality system at work. My boss really liked it, especially since it cut down on errors in our output. It forced our testers to stop assuming things.

With Doug Adams, everything of his that I've read I have thoroughly enjoyed. I love the Hitchhiker's Trilogy +1, and really enjoyed his Dirk Gently series.
