It's very hard to find the basics:
How to pick wire thickness (found), type of wire, type of wick and wick thickness
How many times to wrap around the wick and why (does the # of wraps affect the voltage)
What can touch what (e.g. can the wire touch itself?)

Instead, all I can find is:
Here I am folding the wick.
Here I am wrapping the wick around my finger to make folds.
Here I am wrapping the coil around the wick.
Here I am wrapping the coil around a nail first.
Here I am making a 3-4 coil for this type of rda.
Here I am making a 4-3 coil for that type of rda.
Here I am installing it by tapping the wick strands in.
Here I am installing it by pushing the wick strands up.

The most helpful ones I've found so far are tutorials from Todd ecigreviews
I have finally grasped the entirely counter-intuitive fact that "higher gauge = thinner = higher resistance." (It's like needles for which higher numbers are also smaller.)

And tomcatt has a good summary of types of cotton wicks.
MyWikkaSite: Cotton Wick Wiki
I sent him a PM about width and why is presumably bleached "white" bamboo thread better than "natural" bamboo which doesn't sound bleached but I don't know how much he's around now that he's not a mod.

While the thickness determines the resistance per inch, the number of inches used would determine the overall resistance of the piece of wire.

So, the more times you wrap it around the wick, the more length you are using for the coil. More wraps will equal higher resistance. Higher resistance requires higher voltages to achieve the same watts.

I want coooooooool vapor. So Kanthal A-1 30 or 32 AWG wrapped 5 times should do it. And if it's too cool, take off a wrap or two, right?

Can the wraps touch?

So, as I am getting RDAs, size doesn't matter (or wick thickness.)

I'm getting an igo-L and a Scar (thanks Chim and Trav.)
I want to make the highest resistance coil possible.

For either of those it wouldn't matter. Personally I'd go for fatter wick so I could use less of it. I like 3mm since I can also use it for evods.

The scar is an octopus type and it appears the Igo can be setup that way as well, with lots of extra wick length stuffed inside to soak up juice. So I'd rather use 2-3 3mm lengths than 4-5 2mm lengths.

As far as wire it's kind of a tough call, you could try 32ga for higher resisitance, but you could probably get the same resistance with 1 extra wrap of 30ga. So it really depends on if it's a tight space you're working with. Some devices have really small areas for the coil, in those cases it's better to use smaller gauge since there's no room for extra wraps.

I like to keep a little of each on hand. I've got 28, 30, and 32. But if I absolutely had to go for just one I'd probably go for the 30 and hope I had room to squeeze in an extra wrap if needed. If you're talking 3-4ohm coils, then I'd probably go with the 32ga or even higher if you wanted higher ohm dual coils.

Sounds right. But no the wraps shouldn't touch each other. It would reduce the overall resisitance a great deal creating a short(er) circuit.

DOn't forget, you can always adjust your voltage to get whatever vape you like from the coil you ended up with (within reason).

Today was a good day.

I didn't do any work at all.

Lots and lots of people popped in... even unexpected people!

Yep... a good day to be sure :)

Thank you one and all!!

That's awesome Deej!
I'm so glad you managed to resist the urge to work & just relax & enjoy your day instead.

Time for me to run off to bed now I guess.
It's back to work tomorrow.
Sweet dreams Deej & Friends.

Happy Belated Bday, Deej, Poeia and Chimney!

Lots of October kids in here. Mine is on the 13th!!

No wonder you love Halloween so much!
We'll have to keep that in mind;)

BTW, I'm looking forward to getting something in the mail other than a bill this week:D
    Thank you!
