Be careful with the Vancomycin, especially double dose. It can mess up your pancreas, liver, and kidneys! My boss had to stop taking it, but pancreatits was one of the reasons for the surgery that gave him the MRSA in the first place. However he was getting the pain in all of the areas listed from the Vanc, not just pancreas.

If you start feeling any abdominal pain in the area of those organs, be sure to tell the doc right away. You mess those up and you'll be eating bland mush for the rest of your life or deal with pain whenever you eat.

I enjoy food too much. Dunno if I'd want to live in a world where any good food at all caused me severe pain.

Hi Jan, Deej and Poe.

Protein? Hmmmm......I think there is protein in beer, not sure about Coca Cola though. That might be a difficult prescription to follow, Deej.
Beer is a carb problem for diabetics. He'll just have to eat t-bone steaks every day for breakfast, lunch & dinner.

they've been pulling blood samples to run organ function testing periodically, just for that very reason. Fortunately they're able to pull it out of the PIC line, so I don't have to suffer the pain and indignity of additional holes in my arms.

Actually, they pull the blood and analyze it before they hooked me up to the IV. That makes for a very very long day.

Whiskey. Irish. Jamison's.

Poor Deej, forced to eat t-bone steaks.

I know, right? Such a heavy cross to bear.

Good Afternoon Everybody!

Deej, so glad to hear that you are doing okay.

Your protein prescription is a very nice prescription to have. Better than more medicine anyway. Did the doctor write it up on a prescription pad in a cursive that nobody can read?

I would go for a hearty, not spicy, chilli. Meat and a couple of kinds of beans are very good protein sources. The beans have fiber and antioxidants too. Can't beat that for recovery. Plus it is cheap and easy to make. :)

I sent you that list of the suggestions that I gathered. Just make sure that you wait until you are better to mess around with them.

chili sounds really good. I'll have to see if my sister has a good recipe. Canned chili is okay, but homemade is just so much better.

I look at that list, and it does look tasty. One question that popped out for me was this: should banana waffles have maple syrup?

Definitely homemade chilli. I leave the canned stuff for hotdogs.

I just made some chili tonight. Some ground beef, 2 cans of tomato sauce, a strained can each of: corn, chopped tomatoes, kidney beans, and black beans. Fry the beef. Toss in everything else and simmer. Top the bowls with cheese and sour cream. Easy and tasty.:)

As for the banana waffles I would say without syrup. I think the peanut butter waffles should be without too. I believe the bananas and peanut butter should both be sweet enough without the syrup. Not too sure though.

OMG I was so glad when I got my PIC line. I was in for 12 days, prolly got it like 1/2 way through. My arms and hands were like bruised Swiss cheese plus they somehow let me get partially dehydrated making the veins even harder to find.

They mostly used it for the IV's but whenever I could I'd try to talk them into getting the twice daily tubes for testing from the PIC as well. The roaming "blood test crew" were a bunch of heartless vultures. They'd just keep stabbing and stabbing each time in a more sensitive area, promising the next one would be it.

I could practically live on peanut butter, it's got lots of protein. Unfortunately I think it's high in carbs, and possibly sugar too depending on what kind you buy.

Surely wouldn't mind the steaks though.

Jameson has the WORST bus shelter ads. Okay, second worse. They don't have pictures that Zelda wouldn't post, for no reason (as many liquor companies do because it doesn't matter if women are offended since they don't buy alcohol), but their ads are memorable for their exceptional dullness.

Jameson's tv commercials are pretty darn good though. Maybe they spent all their marketing money on the giant squid and eagle for their tv ads and just decided to give up on the other ads.:)

They do seem to put a lot of extra stuff into peanut butter. I believe peanuts by themselves are very low in carbs but they add sugar to peanut butter and bump the carb count way up. I think they add the sugar to make it more appealing to kids or something.

The peanut butter I get from Trader Joe's has the following
Ingredients: Dry Roasted Peanuts

You can get it with salt as well, but I don't like that. Supermarkets have sugar free PB as well.
2 Tablespoons = 190 calories, 7 grams of protein & 7 grams of carbs (2% of RDA)

Spud, so their TV ads aren't things like Mr. Jameson receiving an invitation to court for "your wiskey + one"?
or "The only thing we've changed in the past 1xx years is the bottle." I'd really like to think they've improved on the hygiene a bit since then, but I guess not.

Trav, what sickliness did you have?
I inherited my father's veins -- easy to see but impossible to find. The only person who gets them on the first time is the nurse in my GP's office. My Dad always tells them to just start with a butterfly needle. I've tried that but nooooo. They'd rather save half a penny and stab me 5 times. I once ended up getting anesthesia in the back of my hand because they ran out of places on my arm to stab me.

Ya, IMO they are better than that.

I love almond and cashew butter but I agree that cashew butter is very hard to find. :(

If you are looking for high-protein in chili, I make chili with ground turkey (or I buy the turkey chili from Trader Joe's, it's pretty good, too!). I add frozen corn when I'm cooking it, and serve it over brown rice with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. I'm by no means a vegetarian, but I have flirted with the idea, and studied on it--rice, beans, and corn have complimentary amino acids, and make complete proteins. Plus, it's delicious!
