The happiest day from a young boys life; short story time chillun's
The three boys met shortly after breakfast on a warm summer morning. The sun was shining and the day was looking to be one of those lazy summer days, nowhere to be, and no one looking over their shoulders. The fields were full of half grown corn, the strawberries were about done setting fruit, and the boys had agreed the day before to go fishing in old Maclouds irrigation pond. Sometimes it would yield a few bass or a bunch of horned pout if they were biting that day, but this day only one small bass took the bait.
The two brothers, Dane and Gene along with their cohort Leroy, decided to do a lil' frog a' giggin'. Leroy had the softball bat, Gene had the hoe, for raken' 'em in once they got bonked, and Dane had his pellet pistol, which he loved to use to shoot them pesky frogs with. The three miscreants would laugh and giggle uncontrollably each time they would whack or shoot one of the many bullfrogs, and covered in mud from head to toe they proceeded to harvest a rather nice bucket full of frogs.
It only took a couple short hours till the three amigos had a nice feast ahead of them. jewel, Leroy's sister which raised him after taking him away from his birth mother, was very excited to see the big ole bucket full of frogs, and she said, you boys clean and skin them legs an I'll cook 'em up nice for lunch, go on now...
Lunch was delicious, jewel had taken the frog legs and breaded them in flour and corn meal, then fried them up in a big 'ole skillet full of lard, there were also some fried taters to go along with the meat, and some nice cold iced tea.
Bellies full, and now bored the lads set off wandering the fields, stopping to share a cigarette nicked from a pack that was sitting around, the smoke made them dizzy and a little giddy...what to do next, they discussed. The three wandered to a small bluff overlooking the back road that went by, and for some odd reason, it seemed a good idea to dislodge one of the old boulders sitting up there, and roll it down the hill. Another, and another followed, there were three or four boulders which had rolled and bounced down the steep incline and now rested in the roadway. The boys were pleased, and joked back and forth about what may happen next. What did happen was a town truck came along the road and the worker stopped at the boulders, got out of the truck, and was perplexed at the situation. Gene decided to toss a softball size rock at the truck, which made a rather resounding thud as it created a sizable crater of a dent on the roof, several more rocks resounded off of the vehicle, which was looking more and more like it had been in a war zone.
The town worker screamed what the hell is wrong with you, as he tore up the incline giving chase, shouting all the while how he was gonna beat the hell out of them. It was easy for them to outpace the out of wind worker as he had to scramble up a rather steep incline, and they had been hidden by the shadows of a large pine tree, so he never did get a good look at the three. Being well ahead of him before he crested the bluff, the three got down on their bellies in the tall grass, and listened for him, afraid to poke their heads up and be discovered.
The man was about half way across the field, still shouting curses and threats, when Leroy lit the match...the fire which ensued was like a hungry beast, it seemed to have wings as it rapidly spread and engulfed the field. The worker ran in terror when he realized what was occurring, the three boys were laughing hysterically until their ribs hurt while watching the mans back fleeing to his truck. There was some exciting commotion as the big red trucks came screaming to the scene. The fire wasn't really all that big a deal, as the grass quickly burned up, and didn't spread to any area with any abundance of fuel. The three boys skulked off into the woods, and took the back woods paths back to their respective homes... ah, the glorious days of a miss spent youth...
