I also have the dark vape stains... :( I am a coffee drinker, but never had the problem to the same extent while smoking.

Does straight nicotine stain teeth? When people talk about "nicotine stains", I'd always assumed they meant *tar* stains, but maybe I'm wrong? Maybe nicotine on its own really does stain tooth enamel?

I really don't think so. There's nicotine in a lot of vegetables too. I think it's just the lack of saliva. It's not a vaping problem, it's a dry mouth problem.

Thanks, Rosa. That could be the case. My mouth doesn't *feel* particularly dry to me, and I've always drank lots of water, but I could try stepping it up. Wish my dentist appointment was coming up sooner so I could confirm...

--Anybody involved in dentistry know for a fact whether nicotine alone can cause staining, or if dry mouth is the more likely culprit here?

I've heard that as well, but what would be more interesting to know is exactly what vegetables and how much nicotine they contain in comparison to a cigarette and to e-liquid(with nicotine).

That's the answer I'm waiting on in this thread.

Oh, I'm sure it's just trace amounts.

Also, they use nicotine as an insecticide too: funny, plants that make their own insecticide -- I guess it makes sense though.

Thank you Rui. P.! Your search gave much better results than mine:

QUOTE:
"First of all, it is important that you help in spreading correct and accurate information. It’s actually not the nicotine that causes the stains. Nicotine is a colorless substance, albeit very addictive and said to be carcinogenic or cancer-causing. If it’s not nicotine that causes all those yellowish, slightly brownish stains, what does? It’s the coal tar from the burning of the tobacco in cigars and cigarettes."

** please note: to the best of my knowledge, nicotine is not a carcinogen**

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine

QUOTE:
"The carcinogenic properties of nicotine in standalone form, separate from tobacco smoke, have not been evaluated by the IARC, and it has not been assigned to an official carcinogen group. The currently available literature indicates that nicotine, on its own, does not promote the development of cancer in healthy tissue and has no mutagenic properties. However, nicotine and the increased cholinergic activity it causes have been shown to impede apoptosis, which is one of the methods by which the body destroys unwanted cells (programmed cell death). Since apoptosis helps to remove mutated or damaged cells that may eventually become cancerous, the inhibitory actions of nicotine may create a more favourable environment for cancer to develop, though this also remains to be proven."

Right on Rosa. Several conversations I've had with 3 physicians all agree that nicotine alone has never been 'proven' to cause cancer. After all these years, I'd like to think, if it were a carcinogen then we'd know about. One physician did tell me that if a person has the propensity to get cancer anyway, that nicotine would accelerate the onset of cancer ... but this is not medically proven.

my teeth have gotten sooooo much better. in fact the reason i started vapeing was because i needed periodontal surgery(grafts) caused from smoking for 38 years, and now everyone has noticed the whitetness is starting to return.
my teeth have not looked this good in a lot of years and i stopped analogs last thanksgiving (november).
if it weren't for the fact that i've spent half of my retirement on vapeing gear, i'd be going on tour lauding the wonders of vapeing.lol.

FTW I have also noticed that my teeth are not as white as they used to be. I've quit the analogs now for 2 months and my health has improved dramatically. My teeth however are not so good and I am brushing longer and using floss and mouth wash nearly every night now. Oh well, i guess its a small price to pay.

That's what I think too. I bet I can still breath when my teeth are gone.. try that with a lung though, not so much.

I'm firmly in the "dry mouth causes the staining" camp (thanks Rosa). I don't remember where on the forum I read it, (it was months ago) but someone suggested Biotene mouthwash and evora plus mints to combat this. I can tell you from experience that they both work well for dry mouth.
Of course, the best solution when vaping is to drink some water, followed by water, then some more...water!:p

Yes, this has been my experience as well. My teeth are much whiter than they used to be. In fact, it's presented a problem: one of my front teeth is capped, and when I got it the dentist matched the color to the rest of my teeth. My teeth have whitened, but the cap has not, so now I have one dingy front tooth amongst my otherwise pearly whites!
