"We know that, typically, smoking cigarettes leads to something else, and that leads to something else"

I saw this on the news last night. And when I heard David Harris say the above I kind of lost it.
Since when does smoking cigarettes "typically" lead to something else? To me, that kind of speculation could be said about anything.
Driving a car could lead to stealing them. Owning a dog could lead to eating them.
Does that sound asinine? Absolutely. Just like Mr. Harris sounded.

This kind of ridiculous speculation is what leads people to go on modern day witch hunts. First they ban e-cigs from campus, and from using them in your own vehicle on campus. What's next? Mandatory banning of home use if you have school aged children?

Granted I am all for no children using any form of e-cig, but for pete's sake, these people need to wake up. If it came down to it, I would have rather had my kids (when they were in high school a few years ago) sneaking 0mg e-cigs, than the Black and Milds flavored cigars that all the kids smoked. Speculating that kids who sneak a smoke and may move on to other substances is a far reaching speculation. And I think Mr. Harris is just promoting a culture of panic amongst the Desoto ISD parents. And with this news story he is spreading his broad speculation to other cities in an uneducated and reckless manner.

It started at a football game....... Outside.......where parents go to see their kid tackle and knock down other kids wearing pads and helmets.

Outside. Where adults are

Ummm just one more step to nanny-ism.

I hear ya. I work for a school district in Texas. And.......are you ready for this? My boss saw me with my Vamo, and emailed the school board. Now, it's against policy to even have an "e-cig" on the premises. I can understand not using it, but hello, in my purse?????? Meanwhile, there's a couple of smokers with their packs sitting on their desks. Unbelievable.

The county I live in has a similar ban. They are not allowed on school premises by anyone, including parents. It is remarkably funny to me.

So, my kids are old enough to drive themselves to school, but on the occasions I do go to school, I make sure that I vape openly on the premises when I am in my car or outdoors. I was approached by staff a couple of weeks ago. The staff member advised me that they could confiscate my electronic cigarette. I laughed at this. I looked this guy and said, "No, I do not believe you can. I suppose you will have to prove me wrong." He did not say another word.

Sorry, outdoor bans on public property are worthy of civil disobedience in my book. They can call the police, they can make their empty threats, they may even back up the threats. Whatever. These county employees make their living with my tax dollars, so I will be damned if they are going to tell me what I will do in my car when I go to the school that I have been paying for for over 25 years.

I may eventually face consequences for this decision, and I am fully prepared to do so. I am not prepared to capitulate to this rule.

EDIT: I want to clarify, that my issue is with the school board, not the employees of the school. The employees at the school are just doing what they are told.

Agreed. But I cringe at the thought of trying to have a conversation with that guy. He already knows. Decision made.

Yes it has.

To be on topic: Ban them inside the school itself, I have zero problem with. OUTSIDE bans, huge problem with.

It's so great to now be associated with people like the ones on this forum, instead of the ignorant ones I unfortunately deal with on a daily basis! :)

Be patient with the ignorant. They just don't know...yet.

Many have been conditioned to fear/hate smoking, and vaping looks like smoking, so they fear/hate it. Only you taking the time to explain the difference will change their perception. Consider yourself an ambassador to vaping. Don't be too pushy, either. Just explain it, and if they appear interested in learning, share the science of vaping with them. Some people don't want to hear it. It is not everyone's pet project, after all.

If you can show a handful of people why it is completely different from smoking, that is something worthwhile. Converting smokers has been a very rewarding thing for me. I count my total at about 20 so far.

Good luck, and happy vaping.

It is necessary. But without a ban on the entire property one could stand by the front door and vape, which I do not agree with, and SOMEONE will do it if they can.

Absolutely not necessary at all. You could ban vaping within 20 feet of the entrance to the building and accomplish the same thing.

What about possession of vaping materials? What right do they have to prevent me from carrying a legal product in my vehicle?

It is the chronically ignorant that intend to stay that way, I fear, are in most of the seats of power. We definitely have an uphill battle to fight. Ignorance can be helped. My way or the highway seems to be ingrained in the chronically ignorant. I fear that they are that way by choice.

You may be right. I cannot change the people in the seats of power. I keep myself from worrying about them by focusing on changing those within my little world.

I have the most influence over people I interact with. Maybe, just maybe, if I change a few hearts and minds here, it will make a difference.

As do I Edd, as Do I. I am mostly homebound so don't interact with very many folks in the outside world but still do what little I can do.
