Hey all, being new to diy I decided to purchase several flavors from The Flavor Apprentice via Wizard Labs. I didn't know what to get so i randomly got what sounded good as I couldn't really find any detailed reviews on flavors in one place and as you know it is hard to decide on what to get if you have never tried it before.
I recently came across a thread on this board where one person tested their flavors by putting a drop in a 5ml container of vodka and swishing it around, so this got me to thinking. I don't drink alcohol, so I decided to use water instead. I didn't want to go through the process of vaping every flavor so this was an ideal solution to try and my findings were far different than what I expected them to be and it has given me a better understanding about the different flavor profiles and how the way something smells and tastes are completely different from each other. I compared vaping a single flavor and swishing it with water to be pretty accurate for the most part. However, different strengths will give you different results (all flavors were tested at 1%). Anyway, I wanted to share with you newbies out there what I have learned. I hope you find this review helpful and I hope it will help you decide on a few good flavors to try out.

I want to point out that everyone's taste buds are different. What I like, you may not. I have tried to be as transparent as possible with my findings. Also, some flavors are more concentrated than others so their flavor profiles will be more on the perfume side in my review since all were tested at the same 1% strength and those flavors should be used at a smaller percentage or mixed with other flavors. If you have given any other flavors a try and want to add to this feel free to post below. Be sure to copy this post with your additions so all reviews can be found in one post.

*smells are based on the concentrated version before dilution

TFA Banana (ripe)
Smell- Very strong, smell like banana runts with a perfumy note.
Taste-Very Strong and perfumy, but definitely has a nice banana flavor, slightly bitter sweet on exhale similar to the rind of a banana.
Finding- This would make a nice stand alone used at a lower percentage. It would need some steeping or airing out to get the perfumy taste to soften. Will go nicely with other fruit or cream flavors.

TFA Acetyl Pyrazine 5%
Smell- In full concentrate it smells like fritos, prediluted (6 drops to 6ml of pg) smells like a slightly salty nut bread.
Taste- Pie crusty, bready but also a little nutty has a bit of a peppery after feel in my mouth. Get a monkey bread sort of vibe without the sweetness on exhale.
Findings-Very strong at the 5% so it needs to be diluted before using in your recipes or it will over power everything! I see this going great with my bakery vapes.

TFA Black Honey Tobacco
Smell- Honestly? it smells a bit like cat pee. I wont lie it's not very pleasant.
Taste-Wow, tastes like honey, but with a floral note and it leaves a silky feel in my mouth.
Findings- There is no real tobacco taste I get with this unless you consider the floral note tobacco, but I do think this would go nicely with a fruit and cream, but not as the main flavor.

TFA Toasted Almond
Smell- Smells like almonds, with the dirt and shells LOL yes I said dirt
Taste- Very nutty, I don't taste dirt, but there is a nice earthy taste, not bad. It has a very nice nutty after taste on exhale
Findings-This is a very good flavor if you like almonds it is very close to the real deal. I think this would go good with just about anything.

TFA Bavarian Cream
Smell- Caramel, creamy and sweet
Taste- Tastes like a creamy vanilla there is a very faint bitter after taste but on exhale it is buttery and sweet
Findings- I really like this flavor, I have used it in many of my vanilla based recipes and it seems to help blend it all together.

TFA Raspberry (sweet)
Smell- Very sweet candy like fragrance I can definitely smell the raspberry
Taste- Very pleasant flavor, similiar to those hard raspberry candies with the soft center, slightly sour and sweet on exhale.Findings- This is a very nice flavor if you like sweet and sour give this a try

TFA Coconut Extra
Smell- Smells like a nutty cherry (similiar to a cheap almond extract you get at the store) very perfumy and strong.
Taste- Still very strong and perfumy but I can taste the nut flavor however it doesnt really taste like a true coconut there is a bitter aftertaste.
Findings- This is the coconut extra, which means it is ultra concentrated so I assume that is why I don't find this one pleasant at 1% although, I have used it in several of my recipes and it is a very nice flavor. Caution very little is needed or it will overpower everything else in your mix.

TFA DX Hazelnut
Smell-More nutty and rich than the Toasted Almond I can detect very faint coffee notes.
Taste- NOT the same as it smells, it is very chemical based and only slightly nutty, The toasted almond packs more of a nutty punch. However, on exhale I do detect more nutty goodness.
Findings-I have never had a real hazelnut before so I can not give an honest opinion on this one. Although, it does pair well with the Toasted Almond.

TFA Green Apple
Smell- Very Strong, has a perfume too it, but it definitely smells like a green jolly rancher candy.
Taste- Yuck, smells better than it tastes. To me it tastes like car freshener and on the exhale there is a sour after taste.
Findings- This is a very strong flavor. I believe in the right % this could be a winner even as a stand alone especially if you like sour.

TFA Dragon Fruit
Smell- Very Subtle fragrance almost a mix between a plum and a berry.
Taste- Very nice flavor, sweet and fruity with a bit of tartness.
Findings- I have never tried real dragon fruit, but if the real thing tastes this good then I want some.

TFA Watermelon
Smell-Smells like a very ripe, freshly opened watermelon a bit on the artificial side but not much.
Taste- It has a nice flavor. Reminds me of watermelon taffy without the taffy.
Findings- This is worth getting I believe it will go nicely with a candy or fruity vape mix.

TFA Blueberry Wild
Smell- Fragrance seems a bit weak but I can detect the blueberry
Taste- The flavor is much stronger than the fragrance it is a very pleasant taste and very close to real blueberries
Findings- This one has a nice flavor could be great stand alone at the right %

TFA Juicy Peach
Smell- Smells like a peach flavored caprisun drink
Taste- Ha! Tastes like it too. Very good! it is not chemically at all it's sweet, juicy and fruity. I can almost feel the peach fuzz.
Findings- What an excellent flavor, not what I was expecting at all. This will be great on it's own.

TFA Pomegranate Deluxe
Smell- VERY Sweet and sour, my face puckered just from taking a whiff
Taste- It is NOT as sweet as it smells, it is a bit more on the bitter side. I was thrown off by this one. However, it is not a bad flavor a bit perfumy but it has a very nice smooth finish on the exhale
Findings- Yet another fruit I have never actually had, but I would expect it to taste similar to this

TFA Caramel Original
Smell- strong buttery note, with a touch of burnt sugar
Taste- very creamy, buttery a bit of sweet, but more creamy and buttery tastes exactly like caramel. The best description would be like the hard caramel candies.
Findings- If you like caramel you are going to love this one.

TFA Caramel Candy
Smell- I detect a hint of a buttery note and it is slightly sweet, but it has a more artificial smell to it than the caramel original
Taste- This one has a very different flavor profile than the caramel original. I am getting a weird vitamin after taste on this one.
Findings-If you are looking for a true caramel flavor than this one is not for you go with the original. With that said you could mix the 2 together and see what you get.

TFA Vanilla Bean Gelato
Smell- Very chemically, not really perfumy hard to explain
Taste- This tastes like a very cheap vanilla extract and it has a peppery feel in my mouth with a slight bitter taste. However, on the exhale it has a nice vanilla flavor
Findings- This one is a bit odd. I do like it and I use it in a lot of my recipes but I tend to pair it with some vanillin and bavarian cream. I have not tried it as a stand alone because I personally do not think it would be very good. but it does add a kick when mixed with other cream or vanilla type flavors

TFA Strawberry Ripe
Smell- WOW! Smells JUST like ripe strawberries plucked from the vine. Note I am not an artifical strawberry lover, but this smells fantastic!
Taste- I am equally impressed by this flavor it really is a true strawberry flavor it is sweet fruity and a bit tart. Perfect Replica IMO
Findings- If you are not a fan of strawberry flavorings. PLEASE give this one a try. I try to be bias in my reviews but MAN this stuff is wonderful.

TFA RY4 Type
Smell- Smells Chemically not really like a caramel, vanilla tobacco
Taste- Tastes like it has a hint of mint? Koolada? not really sure I sort of get an earthy flavor. Best put I feel like I am tasting a pine forest.
Findings- I can't say that this is bad, but it is definitely not something for me personally. It is not what I was expecting at all in flavor and I really do not detect any tobacco notes

TFA Pie Crust
Smell- Smells like...Pie Crust, graham crackery, buttery flaky crust.
Taste- The flavor seems a bit subtle to me but it is pretty spot on there is a light touch of sweetness and a nice creamy not on exhale
Findings- I would use a bit more of this in my recipes. It is very good and if you plan on making any cobbler or pie vapes give this one a try

TFA Pear
Smell- Very strong and perfumy but it does smell like pears. Maybe a hint of spice?
Taste- OMG! I had to spit this one out. at first it was sort of a strong pear and then it rapidly started tasting like vomit! seriously, I just couldn't take it.
Findings- I believe the nasty flavor is because this is super strong. I have used it in a VERY small percentage in one of my vapes and I acutally enjoy it very much so please do not take the vomit flavor as is. When vaping in a very small amount mixed with other flavors it is quite good.

TFA vanillin 10%
Smell- Very faint vanilla scent
Taste- Do not let the faint smell fool you. This stuff is VERY strong and will burn your taste buds off if you are not careful. It has a slight vanilla flavor.
Findings- This is not really a flavor it is more of an additive like Koolada or Sour. Use at a very small percentage and it can add a kick to your vanilla blends and even round them out a bit.

TFA Mild Black
Smell-Smells good sort of a tobacco, but I get a touch of vanilla in there.
Taste- Tastes similar to a vanilla cigar. This one is pretty true to it's name and the closest to a tobacco flavor I have tried so far.
Findings- My husband uses this one as a stand alone and the house gets that sweet vanilla cigar you would expect from a black and mile without the smoke.

TFA Red Type
Smell-Smells good, I can smell a touch of menthol in this one
Taste- sorry, not loving this one. it tastes like a mix of house cleaner, menthol and pine
Findings- Most tobacco flavors I have tried have the pine flavor to them. I am not sure if this is common but if you like those flavors give this one a try.

TFA Turkish
Smell- very earthy it does have a pleasant tobacco fragrance, but there is a hint of a green hay smell to it
Taste- upon tasting it seems like a very nice simple vape tobacco, but on exhale all I get is hay. If that hay flavor was not there this would be great.
Findings- Not the best but better than some of the others I have personally tried

TFA Tobacco
Smell- Simply put Floral Perfume!
Taste- Unfortunately, this one tastes just like a flower. I feel like I am literally chewing on flower petals
Findings- some people personally enjoy floral vapes. If you do then please give this one a try you will like it.

TFA Cubano
Smell- Smells like Jalapenos or something with a very spicy kick. It burns my nose a bit and gives me the urge to sneeze
Taste- This is a spicy floral kind of flavor. This one is very hard to describe because I just can't describe it any better than a spicy floral.
Findings- again, if you are into spicy floral vapes you will really enjoy this, sadly this one is not for me.

Well, there you have it! all of my flavorings I have purchased so far and what I personally think about them. I hope this has been helpful for you with making your first diy flavor purchase. I know it has been for me and I now have a better understanding of how this whole DIY thing works. Now to use my new found knowledge and make something great :)

I appreciate the words of your wisdom here. I DIY and find that most of the TFA flavors are strong and use them ranging from .25% to 3% with a week steep. Then again, taste is subjective. ;)

Yes, I have learned from my little taste test that the way a concentrate smells does not equal to the way it will taste in my juice and since everyone has different strengths that they like their flavors it makes it hard to pick a recipe and give it a try without knowing what the end result might taste like. This was the mistake I made and I wasted quite a bit of both flavorings and my nic base (since I get mine premade).

The starting percentage chart on the TFA thread was very helpful and relatively close IMO but it didn't really give me anything to go on as far as flavor profiles so that is why I decided to do this. Vaping is different than putting a drop of flavor in water. But it gives me an idea of what the stronger flavors are so I can note it when I decide to use it in a recipe. Sometimes I will use of to 10% of one flavor if I really enjoy it :) Plus steeping plays a role in how a flavor will develop over time. The banana for example is a very strong flavor for a shake and vape, however, it mellows out dramatically after a couple weeks so I use more than others if I know it will be sitting around a while :)

One thing I tend to do if a flavor is really strong, I will dilute it by half, if not 3/4, with unflavored. It has always mellowed out enough to vape it and not waste. I use premade 75pg/25vg unflavored 36 mg/ml. As then I have a bottle of pure vg and pg to make the blend I like to use along with the strength of nic. I have a tendency to always make 30pg/70vg @ 6mg/ml.

You can do that but i suggest you keep your thread here and continue reviewing flavors.

Yeah, That's why I didn't have TFA in the title on this one. I wanted to leave it open for more reviews by different companies for the future I may even do comparisons of same flavors different brands. It will just take a while. I want to try to keep them grouped together so they dont get lost in the comments. I hate having to search endless pages to find what I am looking for. It's better time spent mixing :)

You know when I looked at the title I though to myself " Here we go another flavor review" But I must admit that you are talented and you wrote a very profession very very nice review. Your detailed reviews coincide with my findings so our tastes are similure. I look forward to any future reviews you may be doing. Great job. BOOKMARKED

You are off to a good start and the first thing I recommend to new DYI'ers is to taste your flavors individually and vape the base without flavoring and adjust it until it's perfect for there individual taste then and only then work on flavoring. It seems that you follow that advice. I predict you will be one of the future DYI super stars here very soon.

Aww, thank you! it's nice to hear that from someone who is pretty knowledgeable themselves :) I took a peek at a few of your blog posts and I plan on reading them in depth today :) I am still very new to all this (only a few weeks). I kept finding myself making juices that were just not what I expected, so then I resorted to hunting down others' recipes to try them because they sounded good and yet again they didn't turn out the way I wanted them to. Thus the reason for testing all of my flavors and taking notes on their properties and what I liked and disliked about them. Obviously most people do not want to vape something that smells like cat pee, but after tasting it I found out that I really liked it and I really enjoyed that silky feeling I got from it and of course the diluted version did not smell like cat pee at all:) It really is trial and error as well as personal preferences but if the user doesn't know their materials how can they make a decent product? So my first step is to retry those recipes that I thought were okay by others and use my new knowledge of my flavors to tweak it to my personal liking and then on to my own tasty creations :)

another thing I have searched for relentlessly here that I have not been able to find are flavor substitutions. It is near impossible for the average diyer to gather all the flavors ever made so it would be nice to see different flavors put together to make similiar ones. Ex. I don't have vanilla custard, but it might be possible to get a close replica by mixing different vanillas creams and touch of lemon right? This is something else I would like to try and do for the new diyer's out there because one of the great things about diy is being able to save money and that is hard to do when you are buying new flavors every other day because you don't have it.

It's very important to know what your working with and this is why I always say to test your flavors individually. It will give you insight into what goes well together and what wont. It helps you make an informed selection when you get into combining complex flavors. Your off to a great start and knowledge is a very powerful thing. Here's some research material for you.

My blogs will give insight into all aspects of DYI, from steeping to what supplies to have on hand to a basic walk through mixing your first E-juice.

E-Cigarette Forum - dannyv45 - Blogs

Then read hoosier's blogs. These blogs concentrate on fine tuning your mix and give insight on additives.

E-Cigarette Forum - Hoosier - Blogs

Then read Boletus's blog's. These blogs concentrate on formulation of nicotine bases regarding proper calculations methods for figuring Nicotine concentration as well as safety.

E-Cigarette Forum - Boletus - Blogs

Then read Ginger's book "E-Cigarettes 102: DIY E-Liquid". It is a book which I've contributed to that delivers an in depth easy to follow guide in the art of DYI.

E-Cigarettes 102: DIY E-Liquid

I recommend viewing VPLive Vape Team Episode #82: DIY Safety and bookmark it for future reference. It explains safety in all aspects of DYI.

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

Just put one up over there. Thanks I didn't even know that was there :)

You're welcome! I missed that section for a while here too, and there's even a link in this sections sticky threads

I've posted a few threads in there now, usually like you did, one for each brand/range

I just got in some new flavors in and that means more reviews. This one has a couple Capella and TFA flavors.

TFA Flavors
Blackberry
Smell-Smells like nail polish remover!!! I can tell that this is a very very strong flavor
Taste-I get a blackberry with a hint of black licorice with this one. Again it is strong, but I do get a nice light blackberry exhale.
Findings- I think this flavor would be good mixed with some Koolada or mixed at very low percentages with other berries. I don't think this will be good as a stand alone.

Honey Dew
Smell- Rich, sweet fragrance very true to the smell of a fully ripened freshly opened honey dew
Taste- VERY STRONG!!! use at a very low percentage to start. It's a bit perfumey but it isnt bad taste close to honey dew but not the way it smells.
Findings- I sort of get a juicy fruit bubble gum vipe on this. Might be good with bubble gum or other fruits. Not good as a stand alone

Mango
Smell- Smells like lip gloss with a touch of mango
Taste- This seems like a weaker flavor a bit sweet doesnt really taste like a mango to me but more of a papaya. Mango taste on exhale.
Findings- This is pretty good, this goes to show that the smell of flavors does not equate to the way it tastes.

Cantaloupe-
Smell-Smells like juicy fruit gum!!!!
Taste- Good sweet melon flavor. This is a keeper
Findings- I haven't had real cantaloupe in a long time but if memory serves, this is pretty close.

Orange Mandarin
Smell- smells like the outer part of an orange dreamscicle bar
Taste- Very good flavor its got that orange rind hint to it, but it reminds more more of the outer part of an orange tic tac.
Findings- This will be going in a lot of my recipes that need a slight bitter tang to it.

Pineapple
Smell- Smells like Pineapple and very sweet!!
Taste- SOUR!!!! I was not expecting it to be so sour, its a VERY strong flavor! Its very good. Once I mellowed it out a bit I really liked it a lot. Its got a nice pineapple exhale and puts me in the mind of the pineapple flavored gummy bears.
Findings- I'm gonna make some gummy bears with this :)

Bubblegum (not juicy style)
Smell- smells like old fashioned pink bubble gum flavored lip gloss I had when i was little. I can't say I hate the way it smells because it brings back a childhood memory.
Taste- Oddly it does not taste the way it smells. It has that pink bubble gum flavor with nuances of black licorice and wintergreen?
Findings- I dont think this would be a good stand alone, but I can see it going nicely with some fruits. It has a smooth and full mouth feel that I really enjoy.

Koolada (additive-not a flavor)
smell- there is no smell
taste- Yowza!! I knew it was going to have a kick but not like that!!! Instant heartburn!! This stuff is very, very strong. even 1 drop in 5mls was a bit much for me. This additive is weird. It doesnt have a taste of mint or menthol but that cooling feel you get from them.
Findings- this is pretty cool and I can't wait to spruce up some of my unloved fruit vapes. This is a must have if you want a nice cool bite to your fruits :)

Capella Flavor Drops

Vanilla Custard V1
Smell- sort of smells like bavarian cream. buttery, sweet, vanilla
Taste- I love, love, love this flavor. I wish I would have gotten this sooner. It's very creamy with a slight hint of vanilla. This is a very rich flavor that is going to be great in dessert vapes. I can even see this as a standalone!
Findings- I know some may not want this because of it's ingredients. I thought about getting the v2 but I am glad i got this one. I forsee a huge bottle in my future.

Cake Batter
Smell- sort of smells nutty? not really creamy like I was expecting. There is a chemical plastic like smell.
Taste- it does have a very light nutty type taste. It is more bread like than it is cake like in my opinion. It's not sweet at all and will need something to make it so.
findings- not good standalone but I think with the right additions it will have a nice cake flavor.

Sugar Cookie
Smell- Smells sweet creamy and lightly nutty. similiar to a true sugar cookie
Taste-I do get a cookie vibe but the flavor is not very strong and a bit on the chemical side. This is one that probably will need a lot of steep time to be at it's best
Findings- I'm surprised how good this is I will use this to make some dessert vapes but not as a stand alone

Cinnamon Danish Swirl
Smell- I just love the way this smells. If they made it in a body wash I would use it. Seriously it smells that good!! Just like freshly baked gooey cinnamon buns
Flavor- very strong cinnamon flavor. Not like red hots but exactly like the cinnamon spice in your cabinet. I dont taste the danish part too it or the frosting, but it may have been mixed too strong. However, I like this flavor very much.
Findings- This is a keeper for me and I plan on using it in several recipes.

Up next are the flavor west flavors I have and a few unknown brand flavors I got from vapeplay.com.

ellejewel - keep up the good work. I really like your reviews and find them extremely informative.
I wish I could even begin to articulate my flavor findings as well as you.
My notes say things like bleh, strange undertaste, very tart but interesting, a keeper, and my most informative Absolutely Horrid-Tossed.

I really think trying out the single flavors is a must on building knowledge and flavor preference.
I have found that although I like eating pineapple and mango, after trying the flavors from a few different vendors I just do not care for vaping them even when mixed as accent note.

Don't forget to keep all of your single flavors (those that are not Horrid) on hand to do your own flavor mini mix up.
I am doing another round of trying blends of my single flavors searching for new low gunk mixes.

Can't wait to see your Flavor West reviews.

Thank you! I enjoy doing it because it is hard choosing new flavors to buy when you have no idea what they might possibly taste like. LOL, if your notes work for you then that is all that matters. Mine could be more detailed, but I am afraid my vocabulary is not spectacular, but I'm doing the best I can. I like the keep the notes with me that way when i am mixing flavors I have an idea what might be good and what might not be, and then I open the tops and shove them together and take a whiff. Sometimes they smell great when put together or sometimes they just smell like vomit or cat pee. LOL but my detailing with the flavors definitely helps me avoid the cat pee blends.

I will try and get the flavor west ones up this weekend if I can. Not sure what brand vapeplay is using but I am guessing either fw or tfa.
