So I started vaping to quit a snusing habit. I have been vaping for over a year and a half. I am just now catching up on all the concerns around diacetyl-acetyl-propionyl-and-acetoin that may be in our vapor.

I did not give up one habit to take on what seems to be a potentially more dangerous one. I am not one to just freak out or really even care the majority of the time. I really believed that all those great custardy flavors were great and relatively safe compared to snus. After what I read in the DIY section yesterday I am really concerned to the point I emptied my squonk bottle and filled it with unflavored juice.

I was totally ignorant about this. Why is there not more conversation about this?

Is there anything I can add to my unflavored nic that is safer than these toxins?

I am ready to start snusing again and sell my vape collection. I am not a happy camper.

do a search. there are plenty of threads. most vapers don't care.

You can vape unflavored if you are concerned. you can also purchase liquid from the few vendors that provide lab certificates like MOV and Vapor Bar. You can also stay away from custards, buttery flavors, creams, butterscotch, vanilla etc ... Not every vendors variations of these flavors contain these diketones, but these are the flavors more likely to contain them.

Mazinny, is it that most vapors do not care or do not know?

I was in the "do not know" category until I did search here. The search started after coming across a discussion about these chemicals in the DIY section last night.

I have not heard it mentioned in other forums here on E-cig and no vendor has ever mentioned it to me.

Thanks for the link johnnyboro!

I did conduct a thorough search and I did not find a lot of discussion on this topic here on Ecig or elsewhere. Most of what I did find is very old dated.

Actually, most people group those chemicals under the "diketones" heading. Try searching for that and you'll pull 10 pages with nearly 800 results. There have been at least two discussions on this forum over the last week (including yet another dedicated thread trying to compile a list of certified diketone-free vendors, the latest in an apparently long series of attempts).

It's a hot debate subject, and somewhat tiresome for many, just so you know. I'm glad you learned a little about it. Read on.

The diketones discussions are not very popular. Diacetyl and acetyl-propionyl, are proven dangerous substances when inhaled. They can be easily removed from e-liquids.

The problem, as one radio show host said, is that most vapers are addicted, ( I am ), to nicotine and will go to great lengths to defend vaping. They will ignore, minimize, question and ridicule anything that could be a threat to the new found nicotine delivery system.

Most vapers are in denial, ( typical addict behavior). Excuses like '' I love my custard '' are ridiculous when it comes to damaging your lungs, ( we have seen that one hundreds of times). I do not give any credit to addicts supporting selling a dangerous product to consumers without any warnings.

Vendors for the great majority just don't give a hoot. They are in it for the money. Even AEMSA, which is establishing standards for their members does not require testing and its president said that there is no way to prevent its member selling e-liquids with diketones as it is not a viable business decision at this time, ( he repeated ''too complicated'' 10 times to that question in the interview).

Simple logic tells us that there is no way e-liquids with diketones will be legal for much longer. The e-liquid industry is grossly failing at self regulation. This is a recipe for regulations by governments. ... and imo they are coming.

In the meantime, until regulations force vendors to sell us safe e-liquids, the only answer I know of is to DIY. It is simple and cost at least 10 times less than commercial e-liquids.

Edit: Here's the link of the interview with AEMSA's president. It starts at the 49 minute mark of the Click Bang radio show. It is long but worth a listen.

Thank you for the replies. I will search diketones and educate myself.

What is dangerous about snus? Good question. My doc said he would rather I had lung cancer than cancer of the mouth. I think he was thinking of dip. I was snusing pretty much 24/7 and have never had a nicotine habit like that. I am seriously considering going back to the Snus. I vape more for the flavor than the nic.
