I've been thinking about the gunk also, I'm starting to think it's from the condensation rather than the actual juice on the wick.
I'm gonna test my theory by putting a piece of blue foam between the filler cup and the mouthpiece. Although, it may still get on the coil, maybe that's why attys have bridges and you don't notice the gunk on standard attys like you do with these. Just a thought!

I suspected the same thing so I tested that over Thanksgiving weekend. Two new, cleaned carts, same juice (VB French Vanilla), in syringes, vaped side by side. After 2ml through each the gunk build up was identical and ridiculous. So bad I had to clean both because they tasted horrible. What I've found so far is that the clearer the juice the less the build up.

EDIT: One used PTB lining in the vapor chamber to absorb the condensation. The filler ring stay dry the entire time.

I don't really know but if I had to guess, the gunk burnt to the coils is actually the remains of the coloring and god knows what else of the juice. My Waffle juice is very dark and that's what seems to clog up the coil the fastest. I wish all e-juice was clear.

For what it's worth,,,,,
I use GV's newport, 24 mg double flav. 70/30,, It's a clear juice. I top off my 6ml tank each morning with 3mls,, by the end of the day the tank is 1/2 full and a lot darker than what I put in it that morning. (looks like weak tea) When I dripped I used a small bottle that I kept open on my desk. after a day or two it too would darken, but now the cap is on and I haven't opened it but 3 or 4 times in the past month, it's still clear. So it sure looks like air will cause a good bit of darkening.

I hear what you're sayin Gummy, but I'm talking about fresh juices. I've started to do some DIY and there are colorings in the flavors themselves when they arrive in the mail. Not all flavorings have color but some are very dark and everything in between. I'm not worried about it, just thought that might explain this crud build up on the coils. I guess it could be sweeteners or something too.

All I know is that I smoked Rat Poison and other wonderful things for over 30 years so a little crud on a cheap little coil is better than a lung full of crud any day.

Mod success! This is great! I see that RS will be putting these out after production starting on 12/20. The problem with the CE2s is that it's not as easy to clean them...RS needs to make a threaded jacket to the terminal so we can take these apart when needed. Why toss these when they could easily be maintained to maximize life? This was one of my old XLs that started to get the nasty, caked-up coil, burnt-up wick taste. After cutting and removing the sleeve, a quick hot water rinse and a dry blot, and a little tug on the tag ends of the wick to pull away the coil-contact portion, I had a brand new carto working like new! The syringe jacket fits snug but can be removed easily for more and more cleanings! And it's nice to watch the liquid level drop. Best mod for these so far! Try it if you haven't already...COV sells them as well.

I've gone full circle. I'm back to my first recessed atty Nicostick. Swapped out the connector and screwed in a StormiCart. Just slide the back cover down to check the juice level. Now what do I do with all this mod stuff!?
I am going through 2x as much liquid though and my 14500's don't seem to last as long. I have some 3ohm xl's ordered and I'm hoping that these 2.5's are just hogs.

BTW, the "Ideal" syringes from Tractor Supply work too. They are larger in diameter. I drilled out the nozzle tip, then used a step drill bit by hand to ream the threaded portion out to 3/8". Added an 801 whistle tip. Perfect fit. I'll probably have to use the plunger tip for a seal as nothing else seems to match the ID.

Yeah, I bought some of the 'Ideal's from there but haven't cut them up yet. Good to know they work, I was wondering.

I hear ya, I haven't touched my mods since I started using this! I used to think I used more juice with these but I actually think it was in my mind! Watching it go down and all, I used to fill a 3ml bottle on my top feeders and use a little over half in a day, not I use about 1 and a half CE2's with this mod. Sounds about the same. I probably waste a little more because when I clean them, I'm sure all the juice on the wicks adds up.

I had to pull the blue foam out, it was not working as well, I think I like the airflow better without it. I don't mind cleaning them for a good vape!

This is true but I also like the larger tube. I didn't like the stock carts but I love these. Not sure why it's so different but I almost gave up on the CE2's untill these.

I have my syringes on order, so I have not made one of these yet. I also cut my wick and use the PTB. I was wondering if it would be possible after the wick in the coil gets gunked up, instead of cleaning it, could you remove the tube and pull out the wick in the coil and install a new piece of wick from the leftover that was cut off. Just a thought. Might be to tedious.

jus got my first 2 packs of e2 r4 cartos the other day. Why do they all taste burnt? tried the method in pg1 but still taste burnt..i usually drip and bottom feed. is this usual in cartos?

do i need to use the XL? i think i got the wrong ones.

I had to clean one of my stock E2 cartos today, and here is what I did. I thought it might help you.
My new ones taste like crap too and I think its from primer being on the coil. There's still plenty of stock out there being sold that has primer on the coil.

I put a small glass bowl with a few ounces of water in microwave and heat it for 30-40 seconds. Take out carefully, it is alot hotter than you would realize.

Then I used tweezers to hold the E2 and scoop up water and let it run out the bottom(battery end).
I use water, others use alcohol or Everclear, up to you (only microwave if using water though).

Did this many times till water runs clear. Also scoop up water and dump it out from the open end.

I saw the water coming out was discolored.

When finished rinsing I held by battery end and shook/flicked it into sink to get all the water out, then blew it out like a regular atty.

I then put it on my pass trough and did dry burns until the coil glowed bright red and the wick under the coil turned white, just as stated in thread.

I goes faster for me because I have a 5volt PT so it burns a little hotter than a battery would.

If all you have is a battery it will work, but if you use this method for cleaning you need to do so a little more ofter so that not so much buildup is on the coil and is easier for the battery with lower voltage to burn through it.

To be honest this is pretty much my cleaning method for attys, but it worked on the stock E2, I do the same cleaning the E2 syringe mod after removing from the clear tube and use a napkin or such to pat the wicks dry.

I believe this would also work for clearing out the foul taste from new cartos as you are experiencing. I'll be doing this on the foul tatsing one I just purchased.

Maybe I don't clean mine often enough. I wait till the taste is bad and vapor diminishes. Then the heavy crud is still there after boiling for 10 min. I have to dry burn for at least 15 min on and off and scrape the hardened gunk in between burns, takes time for sure. I actually shorted a few because I was scraping while burning. I learned from that though, I don't scrape and burn at the same time anymore.

how exactly do i use a tube cutter to cut the tube off of the ce2? i ended up just crushing the tube -__-

Go easy! get is snug.. just enough to hold it in place, twist a few times... snug it up and twist again.... do that 5-6 times or as many as needed...and it should be cut or break apart easily.
