What was the chat like Katya? Did it last a long time or was it short lived?

I honestly don't remember how long it lasted--I tried to join a couple of times but it wasn't my cup of tea. I couldn't keep up. Too fast and too chaotic for me. I like the forum format much better--you can follow the conversation at your own convenience, and you can see the whole conversation from the start to the end. That's more my speed.

Also, in the old days, with ~800 members online most of the time, every thread was a live chat. I could barely keep up with those. :D Now we have 40-50 members online almost every time I look. But a few threads are still very much alive and crazy fast. But only a few.

Precisely, what is the "Benefit"?
The resistance you observe is predicated on our inability to recognize the benefit of a non-threaded chat server.

However, as long as the content is indexed and searchable (Bing/Duck/Google/et al) is seems like it could be a great source for those ISO realtime information. (like Reddit)

Would you know if the infrastructure is GDPR compliant?

Note: I am proudly "that guy".

Again, Best of luck in your endeavors.
