Hard- no. Time consuming-yes. Painful too. It slips. Its a very hard wood, and gets shiny and slick.

Those are still rough. I sand them down and use what is labeled "non-toxic" varnish. Its water based. You should see them once finished. But I only have few. I've given a few away.
