Hi Patti.Welcome! I use to make quilts so I always had tons of fabric around. What left overs I had I used to make house dresses and rag rugs! The same idea you have there except I use a giant hook and crochet them. Let me tell you it flies by.

Small amounts of fabric can be sewed together to make long strips. Larger pieces can be cut or ripped to make long strips (3 or 4 inches wide). They will last for years and years and just look better after washing, fraying and fading.
