DIY E-liquids Questions

GMayberry, you make dripping seem very interesting, and the fact that it's so inexpensive makes it all the more tempting, but seeing as how I know absolutely nothing about it, I was wondering if you could explain the concept to me a bit more...

I mean, is it something I'd be able to do outside while all of my friends/coworkers are smoking their cigarettes, or is it something that'd prolly be a bit less social?

itstre, I'm happy for you - vaping has been a bit of a contentious issue with some of my friends thus far, so I can't say that I look forward to it...
But, I am glad I switched, if only just for my health.

Ummmm.... what if it does what? Seems like maybe you missed a few words there...

You ONLY want to use USP PG or VG. If you're using PG along with VG you don't need distilled water since the PG will make the e juice thinner in combination with VG. VG= vegetable glycerin.

As for alcohol I'm assuming you mean from food flavoring? If so lot's of people steep the liquid uncovered until the harsh smell diapers as the alcohol evaporates.

A good free download is ejuice me up it's a juice calculator.

I seem to be missing a piece of this puzzle. This is the second thread I've read through about this synthetic glycerin from Dow. So far it seems no one knows of a vapor on the market that uses it it yet some think it will be the next best thing since ice cream.
They say it's pure and i have no reason to doubt them but how do you really know it is more pure or much better than any other glycerin available?

steved5600, thank you very much for your advice - I've already looked through the PDF you supplied, and have saved it, as I know I will likely be referencing it in the future.

tayone415, as I've said, I'm very interested (thus far, at least) in solely using VG, so I realize DW is likely a necessity if I am going to be using my e-liquids with tank based e-cigs.
I also actually was thinking maybe alcohol was something that would keep the e-cigs cleaner as they were being used, maybe... But, as I am not quite interested in flavouring at the moment, I'm not sure what you meant, sorry.

Auntie Mame, I've also noticed that both ChemWorld and Essential Depot seem to sell what appears to be very pure glycerin, if you're more interested in that.
Essential Depot even shows the Certificate of Analysis, showing 99.84% purity, with 0.04% of that last 0.16% being water.

I haven't researched ChemWorld's products yet, though.

lol

We just got back in from a funeral out of town, so I will make this short but will respond better tomorrow. Dripping is basically the same in regards to a tank as far as when you can do it. I drip at work with all the other smokers. I keep a bottle of juice with me, drip a bit before I go outside, and usually have to drip once more during an average "smoke break." As far as usage is concerned, it's the same, you just don't have a tank with a days supply in it. Most RDAs allow you to just remove the drip tip, drip some juice, and replace the drip tip and vape away.

I also just noticed that Wizard Labs only allows.orders from, and only ships to the USA. :(

I keep forgetting you are in Canada! :( I'm sorry! If I'm not mistaken, there is probably a Canadian forum on here that could lead you to where most people order for that is either a Canadian supplier, or at least ships there.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but apparently I'm unable to post in any other forum until I've posted in this one at least five times, so this is my first post, I guess.

If it needs to be moved to another forum, or tags need to be added, I more than welcome the administrators/moderators to do so, as I have no idea what I'm doing.

Anyway...

I'm new-ish to vaping in general, but am a complete and utter neophyte when it comes to DIY e-liquids, and so I apologize for my ignorance in advance.

From what I understand, glycerin is one of 3 possible main ingredients in e-liquids (the other 2 being propylene glycol, and/or polyethylene glycol). I'm also under the impression that there are 3 distinct glycerin derivatives - animal, vegetable, and/or synthetic.

Based on the small amount of research I've done, I've come to the conclusion that, for less throat irritation (and more vapour), glycerin is the best option. I've also concluded that the safest derivation for inhalation is synthetic glycerin (apparently pharmaceutical grade, and/or USP - specifically Dow Optim).

Before we continue, if any of my assumptions thus far are either incorrect, or debatable, I implore you to please educate me further regarding these subjects.

I would like to make my own e-liquids for personal use (to begin with), so I'll likely simply be using whatever glycerin I can find for a decent price (I live in Ottawa, Canada - if you have any suggestions of what and where to purchase).

My first real questions are actually theoretical (and are based on the concept of a nicotine and flavour free e-liquid that may eventually have nicotine and/or flavour added in the future):

1. Assuming I can acquire VG, if I want to use distilled water to dilute it, what would be the recommended minimum and maximum percentages of DW to VG to best prevent issues with most e-cigarettes?

2. Is it possible to get drunk vaping an e-liquid with a high percentage of alcohol?

(If the answer to the second question is, "Yes..."):
3. Assuming I can acquire VG, and pure grain alcohol (again, if anyone has any suggestions where to purchase), if I want to use PGA to dilute the VG, what would be the absolute maximum percentage of PGA to VG I could use without destroying my e-cigs?

I suppose the only important question is the first, but I am also very curious about the answers to the second (and possibly third).

[Drug references removed]

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about eventually accepting donations from friends for specialized e-liquids (possibly using Dow Optim as a main ingredient), but that is both very far off, and likely just a pipe dream.

As far as the present is concerned, I'm just tired with the high prices of, "premium e-liquids," and not really having any control of what it is I'm actually vaping.

Hi Geoffrey! I'm in Ottawa too and if you PM me, I can send you a short list of the shops around town!

As for your questions:

1. You can get VG at any pharmacy, and I would start at 0% and work my way up to a maximum of 10%.

2. Unless you're vaping a quantity large enough, I highly doubt it...

3. I don't think alcohol would destroy your e-cigs (I guess it really depends on your hardware) but I would not go above 10% again.

Hope this helps a little!

I'm sorry to have to bring this dead thread back to life, but I thought I'd ask a question, and give an update...

Question: GMayberry, are you still going to offer a more detailed response about dripping? I'll be completely honest and admit that I didn't fully understand what you were talking about, but that the more I hear about it, the more interesting it seems...

Update: Earlier in this thread, I said
Unfortunately, the product you linked to apparently isn't available at Canadian Wal-Mart locations, and the only glycerin I could find at a local Wal-Mart didn't specify whether it was animal, or plant based.

I'm very... Persistent...
After several calls, messages, responses, etc., I've found out that the Rougier brand glycerin (if you look at the fine print on the bottle, it says it's manufactured by Rougier) sold at Canadian Wal-Mart locations is definitely VG. However, it is (somehow) not considered Kosher.

I'm not sure if that helps anyone, but yeah... lol

Also, iamthevoice, do you know of anywhere to get quality nicotine for a decent price in Canada? I'm prolly looking for 1l at 100mg/ml in PG and 1l at 100mg/ml in VG.

(I'm sorry to the member who earlier recommended no higher than 36mg/ml, but that would make the mass project I'm considering way too expensive, and I plan on trying to be as safe as possible, so I think the higher nicotine content will be alright).

I'm sorry, I got side tracked, and honestly forgot about giving more details. lol

I really need to know more about what questions you have, or what you don't fully understand. Are you familiar with how an RDA works, or do you just have coil build questions?

An RDA i basically a tank, without the tank. You have the same workings as far as the posts and coils are concerned, you just don't have the tank feeding the wick from a larger supply of juice around it. You have an open "build deck" with your coil(s) and wicked with the wicking of your choice. Instead of the usual small amount of wick pulling juice from a tank, you will have alot more wick and you will simply saturate your wick from a bottle of juice (dripping). You will vape it just like you do any other mod with a tank. When the juice gets low, you just pull the top of your RDA off and drip some more. The amount it will hold, and how long between dripping will depend on several factors, well depth of the RDA, how much wicking you use, what resistance your coils are, etc.

Typically, people tend to lower their nicotine level when going to an RDA because the nicotine delivery is different. I was at 18mg in tanks, and couldn't handle it in an RDA. I dropped to 12mg, then to 6mg within a week. Coupled with that, there are several other benefits. Flavor is better, MUCH cheaper than buying coil heads, easy change from flavor to flavor, more vapor production, and the ability to use juices that don't work so well in tanks (mostly VG!! :D )

I hope this helps! Respond with any questions you may still have. I will be glad to offer any help that I can!

Thank you once again for all of the information... I've been without the option to use these forums for a while, so please excuse the lateness of my response...

You certainly interested me with your information about RDAs, so I spoke with some of the employees at both Smoke FX, and Sir Vape A Lot in Ottawa, which actually made me a bit concerned about using RDAs since I was born with a fine motor skill deficiency, and have recently noticed my hands are becoming very shaky (something I should prolly eventually see my doctor about)...

In any event, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind also telling me a bit about RBAs, and maybe if they might be better for me to use instead...?

Also, I randomly asked a few questions about mechanical mods, and was told that using RDAs with them can be very dangerous... Any input on that? :/
