I have done 3 different extractions, 2 are pipe tobaccos and 1 was snus tobacco. I filtered each extract at least twice with coffee filters. They smell great but whenever I mix them the juice has a harsh burnt hair/hay taste. The mix also gunks up my coils pretty quickly, but there doesn't appear to be any particulate. I have been mixing at 3-5%. Does anyone have any advice on how to tame that burnt hair grassy note?

What method did you use, and what was your carrier (PG/VG/Alc)? I've heard bad things about PG being the carrier, but haven't tried it myself. I've only done VG extractions thus far, and the only time one tasted a little off (like wet socks) was when I put too much into the mix.

I did a 50/50 pg/vg extraction on the pipe tobacco using the scarf ace crock pot technique. The snus I just mixed into some warm vg and let steep at room temp for 2 weeks.

I haven't done the crock pot method, so I can't comment on that. I've only done three methods so far, all with 100% VG. First one is the "Tobacco Essence" thread that is around here, which includes heating some VG on a pan (low heat), and stirring in your pipe tobacco. The second method I used was the 'microwave for 10 seconds and filter' method, which wasn't nearly as flavorful as the pan method. I have some tobacco slow-steeping in a jar of VG at room temperature right now, which is the third method. I haven't had a hairy or burnt taste yet. My guess is that either the PG is the problem, or you're mixing too much into your recipes.

Try making a batch for each separate extraction you've done at 5% each, and add 1 drop of apple cider vinegar per 5mls per batch. ACV helps smooth out tobacco juices, you could also just use white vinegar. Start very low, add a touch of vinegar, let it steep for a week, and see if the issue is still there.

What kind of atty are you using?if you've got a coil glowing you will get that kind of taste too.

It's not the atty. I have tried it in my a7s and genesis style attys. it is definitely not the taste of a hotspot, believe me I know. I can hardly make the genny's I have function properly, I have my drippers dialed in though.

I could be mistaken but I think the major source of atty clogging ( if you have a sound filtering technique and particulates are not an issue), can be attributed to sugars that are extracted, both natural and those added by the tobacco processors to flavor some tobaccos .
This thought leads me to believe that somewhat quick gunking up of coils is just inherent to NET.
