Agreed, but the big disappointment is that they really have only addressed one - for most people. It's got 200W, but it's still only got on-board Ni200 support. In my view that's a big miss.

And your point Bloke is exactly what I'm getting at....

Since we don't actually know anything yet, other than spotty info about the beta-boxes, then this could change with a firmware upgrade.

But why do betas have gag-orders right now?

If RIP leaked the first image, then why did Evolv give permission to other beta's to piece-meal more info?

Since Phil had to ask for permission, what is the purpose of this?

Taste Your Juice | THE CAT’S DNA IS OUT OF THE BAG…

Why not just stomp-out the leak and wait for the release?

Why issue all of these teasers if nothing's in stone yet?

This thread is ripe with fanboyism lol. Name calling, arguing with certainty about the unknown...

Its ok for people to have an opinion about this device, its power source, watts and how information is being released. This is a "discussion" forum after all. I don't understand what the protocol behind this information release is. Obviously Evolv is behind most of the info being leaked. Some people are saying things, some aren't, some people are releasing videos, some things are allowed, some things aren't allow, tommorow some random beta tester releases some tiny piece of info.. Its all confusing and unnecessary. Even to the point where a beta tester got upset and threatened to stop releasing info because he wasn't happy about people's opinion? It's all very manipulating, at this point a spec sheet should just be released.

Innovation is always good. I think the purpose behind going to 200w was to release a board that also suits researchers and to help the market move forward in the aspect, as well as to please a broad range of customers. Its also a good sales pitch. It without DOUBT, is a safety hazard. I know many of you will say, you should be an experienced vaper before you buy this device, but this is Evolv. Evolv caters to the masses, They provide chips to nearly all vape shops in some way or form of mod. Whether its hana, vaporshark, vapor flask or some other dna chip. They said they believed in "solving the cigarette", and providing a meaningful solution to stopping smoking to the masses. They have reversed their stance, which is ok, but it seems like this will become the new DNA40 and undoubtedly get in the wrong hands due to the brand they have built around dna chips. A simple solution is capping this mod at 50-100W stock, and allowing software suit updates for those who feel they need the extra power. This will allow the regular vapor who buys this in a vape shop to be safe and the advanced to get the power they want. Otherwise, I feel this will be sold at vape shops as a premium item to the masses. 200W is not safe for 80%-90% of vapors, and I can already see vape shops across the country selling this chip to unsuspected vapors. A good example of why this is bad, is in that video where the guy smokes his cotton, hes not alone in doing that accidentally.

Before I get attacked, This is a great mod for the maybe 10% of people who can use it in the 50-150W range, even less who can figure out how to use 200W. But its already being marketed to the masses as the DNA40 followup, which is irresponsible and dangerous dealing from Evolv. This isnt about YiHi or some other company, its about Evolv, who has build a reputation of providing safer low wattage chips that the general vaping market can safely use. This is an insane jump that many people including vape shops wont understand and will sell to people who wont safely use the chip. Also, Temp control will never use over 70W any differently then 200W, unless u have an extremely difficult build. That would also be something I feel should be capped at 50W.

I dont know, in the absence of explicit permission I am keeping my mouth shut.
Ok....some of the youtubers claimed to have been invited to be beta testers and mentioned how long they had the device and other beta testers have said that Evolv wouldn't allow that info to be disclosed. It's caused a lot of confusion for us guys who are hoping for a trouble free introduction when we put our cash down especially for an advanced device such as this.

I guess we'll have to go on assumption till someone can clear things up.

I am not certain as to the logic at play. One possible concept could be that the beta devices/boards could have malfunctions that the beta would address and the manufacture might not want the roll-out to be tainted by the process of identifying and fixing bugs. I encourage Evolv in this case to have a long beta as the DNA40 had a few issues that came to light after release and that was a pain for all, especially them (I had nine boards to return - others many many more and large manufactures probably hundreds if not thousands). I do like where this is leading (computer controlled, higher voltage, balanced charging) but am in no hurry.

I totally agree with that synopsis, ...but it's also why I'm so perplexed as to why permission was given for "Cat's out of the bag". To me, that's counter-productive to the mission of betas.

Maybe one person (RIP?) jumped the gun, by accident perhaps (not realising he wasn't supposed to), and after that happened they figured they needed something official out so they hastily gave approval for a certain amount of info, including photos, to be published by the beta testers.

If that is what happened it might explain the confusion - they weren't planning to release anything, then had to hastily discuss and decide what they wanted to be released and communicate that to all. Meanwhile some betas may have released further info based only on the initial leak, thinking it was now out of embargo.. and so on.

Who knows, but it does seem like - from the titbits I've read here at least - that a lot of it stems from one person publishing earlier than he was meant to.

I would like to see a long beta too. I'm a retired engineer and have been fascinated by the introduction of new technology by Evolv but I also invested over $1000 in DNA 40 powered devices and have been extremely disappointed by the experience.

What is even more disappointing is to be called disgusting names for asking simple questions about the DNA 200. I have been searching online for help in understanding the product and the more I try to understand the more disgusting the name calling gets.

This is way beyond my ability to understand why people would behave that way.

To address some of the more common questions.
  • I personally do not know "why" they chose 200w.
  • The board can be limited by the Modder to any wattage below 200w. If a Modder chose to release a Mod limited to 75w using this board, the user could not exceed that wattage even with the software.
  • Kanthal has a separate wattage limit, you can program a lower limit for Kanthal than would be allowed with TC.
  • Custom TCRs can be programmed via the software.
  • The method used to program a TCR is quite simple, it is not complicated at all.
  • TCR presets are being seriously considered.
  • There will not likely be a preprogrammed TI TCR due to the many different TI alloys and their greatly different TCRs.
  • Currently the software is only available for Windows, a Mac version has been requested and is seriously being considered.
  • Preheat is quite adjustable (both in wattage and punch) and can be turned off, but the software is required to make adjustments.
  • I am not at liberty to discuss pricing at this time, that is above my paygrade.
I am willing to answer straight forward questions if I know the answer.
Questions buried within heavily slanted or opinionated rants are not likely to get my attention.

Perhaps permission wasn't granted? Maybe Rip wasn't supposed to post that picture. lol. Doubt it, but one never knows. Until Evolv speaks, we're just having one big speculation jerk. Heck, perhaps the chip is ready for prime time now. Perhaps it's not.

If an image was all that he posted, that would be easy for Evolv to "make it go away". But then there's the Plumes of Hazard video, published 2 days ago.

They discuss in depth what they've been allowed to say....and "if any of you goes too far I'll just mute you."

None of this makes any sense to me...

Why invite everyone in and then close the door half-way and say "wait for the release".

Thanks a lot, @mikepetro ! Very helpful indeed.

Regarding the "board can be limited by the modder" - I guess there must be jumpers or something similar on the board, if it's possible to lock it out from even software updates?

And regarding the Ti TCR default, I think that's a mistake - there are many alloys but only Titanium Grade 1 should be considered for vaping and I think it would be dangerous to even suggest anyone uses anything else. Joyetech seem to have managed to pre-program OK, and whatever TCR they used works fine with the Grade 1 that Ti vapers are using. I don't have the device myself yet so I can't temp test it to verify the actual TCR in use, yet.

We don't yet know if even Ti Gr1 can vary between batches, perhaps, but then so can Ni200 so I do't see that a huge impediment. And I would see this as an opportunity for Evolv to try and take a leadership role, saying "you should only use Grade 1 for vaping, and we have pre-set only that." A simple TCR of 0.0035 should be fine, as Dicodes recommends and which I've just verified is accurate for my German Ti. Further testing is ongoing.

Anyway good to hear that the software is easy to use, but I maintain that it could be child's play to use and it still wouldn't be used by a large proportion of users. It needs to be on-mod to be successful for the majority, so I hope they will seriously consider that.

The only thing that I can think of that would make sense of this pre-release...and I could be wrong....is that betas (and Evolv) are gather intel from us on how the final product should function?

How does the general public want it done?

And if that's the case, then no input is bad input. :)

I think it would make much more sense to have 2 levels of software. One level for registered mod makers and another software for device users. The device user software would not be able to override the mod makers settings. Makes more sense than jumpers that could be easily changed by the user.

Edit: Or mod makers would request hard coded software choices that were performed by Evolv before sending out the board order.

I agree with you and I think it's two fold. 1. Let the market know something is coming so any buyers about to pull the trigger on another device might be persuaded to wait and see if this is the one they really want;
2. Exactly as you state, get some feedback and ideas about what people want, like or hate or don't want.

A great example is the Ti Gr1 tcr .csv table. Some folks seem to really want this. So post it up on the support section of the evolv website for download. Etc. Easy solutions to what folks say they want without a lot of time or expense. When the thing actually launches for real, evolv is that much more ready to satisfy consumers.

How can they gather input this way efficiently.. They haven't released any information what so ever directly, besides what limited and cryptic info beta testers are saying. Most of this thread is speculation with occasional unverified posts by beta testers.

There's been quite a bit of info that has been released.

Mike has published quite a bit earlier....as has Phil and retird (and others offsite).

Efficiency may actually be their goal and the reason for a piece-meal spread, gather opinions on each set of information packets....discuss with betas...and then formulate their decision?

It's an interesting mystery for sure though.... :)
