Even with only 3 buttons you could make a much more intuitive menu. 2 clicks of the fire button and it takes you to menu mode and the fire button becomes the select or enter button. Up and down arrows move you through the menu. Click fire button on a selection and it brings you into that selections sub menu and do on. Two clicks could be be used in this mode to act as a back button and then once you get back to the main menu 2 clicks of the fire button takes you out of menu mode and into "fire" mode. Alternatively you could use 3 clicks one in menu mode to drop you out of menu mode.

I think it would also be great if we had slightly larger screens instead of one line of text maybe put the screen on the side of the mod similar to the snow wolf. When I first saw it I actually thought the whole side was a screen but something with 3-4 lines would be fine. Just large enough for a proper menu but you could still use the method described above with the screens we currently use and it would still be much easier to use.

What I would ideally like to see us move toward or at least offer as an option is something with only a fire button on the front and then the side of the device is a large touch screen like a cell phone where you can access the menu, adjust settings, etc.

I didn't say it was difficult, as in hard to remember (though I've heard people say that) - it's unintuitive, and requires more presses and more combination of modes than it needs to. I already explained why, and why a simple menu structure would serve much better: scrolling upwards through temps to turn TC off, but downwards to change from C/F is a particular example.

I would love most complex mods to have four buttons not three, but even with three buttons there's opportunity to make things relatively simple and intuitive. And not requiring locking the mod before accessing most of the functionality. And having the ability to go in and out of TC without losing the temp setting. And not require losing one feature to add another (power lock gone for atty lock). And allow adding any number of other features at any time. Etc etc.

There's any number of good UIs around you every day. The applications on your computer, on your phone, any simple device like a car dashboard, a microwave, a radio even. Good UI works on the principle of "least surprise", of clarity. A menu is a very familiar, well understood system, which allows congruence of like facilities into a relative minimum of control actions. It can be updated at any time for any number of actions; it can be hierarchical; it can be self-teaching.

As I've already said, I don't direct this exclusively at Evolv. Yihi did implement a menu but it could have been a lot better. Dicodes did a great job with one button, but it would have been a huge lot better with two, which they could easily have fitted, even in a tube. We'll have to wait for their box mod to (hopefully) see what they do with a good menu and the right number of buttons to begin with.

No-one is doing it "great" yet. But I can point to many that are doing it better than the DNA 40.

The DNA 40 would be a better mod with a menu. That's my view, and I think the view of most who think it through (objectively.) At most you can argue it's not worse with the current system. But even that is shaky when the current system has already required the drop of one useful feature, and the inability to implement another (memory of last temperature setting when switching in and out of TC.)

And not least because, how do you propose they ever add more features with the current control system? Surely no-one would claim the current number of features is the perfect number? The DNA 40 has a whole lot of functionality that's going to be PC exclusive, immediately locking out Mac users and anyone who doesn't have or want to use computer software. Some of that at least could definitely benefit users being on-mod, not to mention other features as yet unthought of. How many different button combinations do you think can be supported by the current system? We already saw with the DNA 40 it had to lose one useful feature (settings lock) to gain atty lock. I just don't see how anyone could claim that's "good" - nor why anyone would claim menus would be worse, when they demonstrably would take no more, and often fewer presses to operate, and they already use them to great effect every day of their lives.

Please don't fall into g's fallacy of "if this is how it is now, it must be the best way." That is the enemy of progress, and is immediately shown to be false as soon as the next, better product comes out. I want every product to be as good as it possibly can be - Evolv most definitely included. We can accept shortcomings, but should never excuse them except as short-term practical compromises. We can and should always strive for perfection wherever possible.

Outside of adjusting a pre-set memory? How? And does it require tilting it left and right?

Great points! I guess ill see when I get my cloudmaker which system is better. Being able to swap will be revolutionary for me. I don't think ill enjoy complex menu button combos though, guess i'll see.

I have two questions

1] Besides this, I seen the IPV3 165W is coming out, and it's upgradable to 200W on two 18650's. Now my question is, if Yihi and several other manf can hit 200W on 2 18650's, why can the DNA 200 not. Is it because the lipo's hit 11v and 2 18650's cant on a wide range of resistances?

2] I see evolv is taking a more complex UI methodology. Is the omission of of a more user friendly system due to the chips onboard memory limitations? I noticed with the IPV4, it can not save memory presents in TC mode, but it can in Wattage mode. Are cuts like this due to memory limitations on chips? How much memory is included for onboard programming on the DNA200 and typically on chips.

Please no attacking me personally its getting old, you love ur evolv chips thats great, but objectivity is not the enemy here. Nor is telling people what this thread should or shouldn't be about.

The DNA200 doesnt cheat! It supplies a full and essentially constant 200W I think. Th snowwolf, et al supply 200W (maybe) in pulses. As far as I understand, 2x18650 cannot achieve true 200W power! Im sure someone who knows will chime in!

Correct. Those 200W dual battery mods are just abusing the pulse. Even 3 18650's can't do true 200W if you ask me personally. The DNA200 is using LiPo which I would need to educate myself more, but evidently highly more powerful.

Pulling 200 watts from two 18650s would require discharge currents in excess of 35A from each cell as they approach the end of their charge. Are there any 18650s that are rated for 35A of continuous discharge? Even if there are, what happens when the end-user puts the wrong 18650s in his mod?

Chinese manufacturers might do stuff like that 'cause they're more or less judgement proof, but Evolv isn't. Which mod maker was it that was sued into oblivion when an end user put the wrong batteries (from Radio Shack?) in his mod and it blew up in his face a few years ago?

Can I ask what maybe a really dumb question.....what's the point of 200w on a temp sensing device when you will get it powering down to 30w almost straight away?
I'm confident it's possible to make builds that will run well over 30 watts in temperature-limiting mode.
Personally, I'm not sure why one would want to though.

I can easily run at 40 W at 400 F, normally 32 W at 380-390 F as I get over niced too quickly at 40 W with 10 mg 100% PG and just have it for after a few beers. 200 W is too high, but I see no reason cloud chasers couldn't us temp limiting at 100 W once they understand how coil for it.

Ahhh I use Atlantis 2 tank nickel .15ohm and I hit temp at 30w set to 450.

That's not necessarily the case, hi-power vaping use special stuff (big atomizers, massive airflow, thick wire for big coils) to achieve basically more vapor in the same time unit; if done properly it's probably not much warmer than the average sub-ohm setup.
Worth having it? Not for me, but there's a growing community of fans - so there's a potential market for this chip

Even on non temp sensing, I don't quite see the point, but I have never really sub ohm without temp sensing.

try 22g nickel
