My husband and I are both 2 1/2 - 3 pack a day smokers. I've ordered two different kinds of e-cigs (901 and 801) and am hoping this will finally do the trick. We've tried everything to quit in the past, nothing worked. At this pint, we're not really interested in quitting, but the idea of no smoke, no smell, and no tar really attracts both of us. But after reading, it sounds like they are kinda high maintenance. Any experiences from other heavy smokers? I don't think I'll mind all the stuff you have to do once I learn how, but I'm not sure about hubby. And it sounds like there is a bit of a learning curve. Is it hard to figure out how to use them? Thanks for any advice.

I smoked for 12 years at about 1-1/2 to 2 packs per day. I ordered an ecig and smoked it and the analogs together for about a week and then just quit smoking analogs...It was really that easy. Sure I would crave them from time to time, but it was not bad.

The 901 seems to be the most popular for a starting ecig, and I liked it as well, but I still longed for analogs. Once I got the penstyle(801) that was it.. I've been cigarette free for over 5 months now.

As far as maintenance and expense: Yes and Yes. But once you start feeling better, smelling better, and generally BEING better, wow! It's worth any cost. Once you get the process down of keeping carts topped off etc, your vaping experience will get better, your equipment will last longer, and the cost will go down.

I smoked the same as you agga and in the first day of vaping, I dropped down by about 2 packs, without even trying. Honestly!

I do still smoke between 1/2 to 1 pack per day...just can't seem to get beyond that (yet)....but I remain hopeful.

And yes, as with anything new, there is a learning curve. And there is maintenance.....but they are not hard to figure out and to me, worth every bit of the time involved to keep them going. Just give yourself some time with them. You'll see what I mean :)

And good luck to you and your hubby!

I was a two pack a day smoker and it has worked great for me. I am on day 21 and have not had a regular cigarette since receiving my e-cig. I did not really experience a learning curve. I read suggestions on this site and have found the e-cig easy to use and I have zero cravings for a regular cigarette.

Good luck to you and your husband.

Hello, I smoked 3 plus packs and sometimes up to 4 a day for over 25 yrs, yes that is right, I have COPD and could not believe what I sounded like, when I slept, ( my wife told me) and when I spoke, it sounded like I was dying. I stopped by using my ecig 6 months ago, so did my wife,

FOR ME AND ONLY FOR ME, IT SAVED MY LIFE..................................

I was so excited to post, I forgot to mention, I have not had an analog since, I have spent quite a bit on developing my e cig arsenal, but I ain't spending up to $600.00 a month in cigarettes for me and my wife

I use several 901'a 801's a mini pipe, SD and e cigar. I have them all set to go all thru the day and travel with all sorts of items, so I am NEVER EVER without, BUT I am NOT smoking those horrble awful killing machines,

I wish you all the success, YOU GOTTA WANT IT,

Hi Agga, welcome!
We smoked big time - and decided to try the ecig without worrying about quitting - it just came naturally..
Just relax with the ecig experience, all the tricks to learn - how to draw properly, top off , batteries charging etc.. actually kept us real busy at first but it was interesting to learn all about it first hand!..
After 7 months..I still do have that morning cig once in awhile, while my hubby has 3-4 cigs still to this day..we just don't put pressure on ourselves..
any cutting down is better than none!
Good luck! and relax..

Both my husband and I have been HEAVY smokers for over 30 years. Not only our health, but also our lifestyles were greaty effected as there were so many places we couldn't go and things we couldn't do because of smoking.

We started using ecigs last fall and I am proud to say that I am completely off analogs and he is about 75% off of them.

We have several different units in our arsenal and I do believe that each individual has to find their own favorite, the one that fits their style/taste the best.

Good luck with your adventure into the world of vaping.

This forum is not only filled with oodles of information on the products, but doubles as a support forum, too. I used to burn through 1-2 packs of Newports a day for over thirty years. Despite a few huge cravings in the first two weeks, I am on day 30 without an analog. The e-cig was just an experiment, but it turned out to be a life changer.

You go cold turkey or wean yourself slowly off analogs. You have to want to change your lifestyle and be willing to break one habit for another. The e-cig is not a 'magic bullet' and probably only provides 40-50% of the analog experience. If you end up to be addicted to nicotine and/or have an oral fixation, this might work for you.

Once you start using your e-cig, you will better understand all the banter on this forum. E-cigs are high maintenance. If you plan to continue using your devices, immediately order two extra atomizers for each one. These things fail often. If an atomizer fails, and you have no extras, you will be smoking analogs again.

Batteries will last about two hours, particularly if you vape heavily (which you will in the beginning). Buy extras and keep them charged. If you are near a computer for any length of time during the day, buy USB-Pass-Throughs. These devices power your atomizer from a USB port, saving you from burning through so many batteries each day.

Buy at least 50ml of smoking juice for each of you. As heavy smokers, you are likely to go through 6-10 pre-filled cartridges a day. This will end up being pretty expensive. When a cartridge starts to dry out you get diminishing amounts of vapor. Use the juices to drip onto the absorbant material in the cartridge to keep it wet throughout the day. If hubby does not want to mess with his, you can rinse and refill his cartridges each evening so he has a fresh batch or the next day. Lots of flavors and strengths of juice are available. I recommend starting with extra high liquid of 24mg/ml or 36mg/ml of nicotine. You can always cut the strength with distilled water and glycerine.

Between starter kits, atomizers, batteries, pass-throughs, juices and cartridges, the initial start-up cost can be high. Just trying several brands of smoking juice will increase your start-up costs. At some point in the future, you may breakeven AND be living a healthier lifestyle. My goal in the next four weeks is to drop down to a lower nicotine juice and, eventually, to zero.

3-4 pack a dayer here. I stopped completely the day my 901 arrived. I now have several 901's and 801's and like the taste much better. I do not have a desire for anything but my e-cig now. I have COPD and had bronchitis at the time I started vaping...took me 3 days to get over it, not the typical 1-2 weeks like my norm was...
My house smells better, hair, clothes, etc...and I breath better!

My son (1 pack a day) didn't want to quit, but tried mine and took one home. He hasn't smoked since either.

I was a heavy smoker and quit my first day of ecig use. The penstyle works the best for me. Compared to standard minis and superminis they have more consistently dense vapor and avoid the quick overheating of those clones.

The USB passthrough has been a huge win for reducing ecig expense and putzing. Also then the portable USB battery pack, USB car adaptor, powered USB hub...

My experience was a bit different.
I was, and still am somewhat addicted to Skoal.
Quit cig's sometime ago and got hooked immediately on the snoose.
I bought a Rio (801 penstyle) from Vapornine as my first and haven't looked back.
Good service and good product.
The thing smokes like a tar kettle and I haven't had the urge for the Skoal in three days.
Amazing.

Thanks so much for all your comments. I'm a little intimidated about learning the ins and outs of e-cigs, but it seems to me that the benefits FAR outweigh the inconvenience of learning how to maintain the equipment and the time to do it. My husband has COPD as well. I hope after he tries the e-cig he will feel his lungs getting clearer and his breathing easier. If I have to, I'll just maintain his as well as mine. I figure we learned to deal with a urostomy bag (hubby is a cancer survivor and had to have his bladder removed) - we can certainly do this too.

Again, thanks so much. There is sooo much to learn and I think I need the actual product in my hand before I can understand most of what I read. I want to watch the video someone posted - I hope this will help me be more prepared when my products finally arrrive.

I know I haven't bought all that I need yet, but with a little practice, maybe I will know what to order next. My biggest fear now is that they'll take them off the market before I can even give them a decent try.

I am on the computer a LOT. Will I benefit from going ahead and ordering the USB passthrough before my e-cigs arrive?

I would invest in a UBS passthrough. Great for when my batteries are kaput and I need to chage them...I use it at the PC all the time...should have ordered one much sooner...so, my answer is...YES ORDER ONE :p

Even with my COPD, I walked 3 miles the other day with dog (one way)...a bit much and I was winded, but not like I would have been, taking a break every 10 mintues

I bought my first e cig from njoy, and wasn't impressed. I then bought a 901, this was much better. It was at that time, I completely gave up the analogs altogehter. Now a few months later, I became frusrtated with the 901. The atomizers just don't last. They give up, some in a matter of days. Enter the Yeti. The yeti, aka as the joye 510 completely satifies my urge. I have purchased 6 kits already, just to have a few extra parts in the event of a ban. They give very good vapor and excellent throat hit. The only draw backis the leaky carts. They do not leak all that much I just keep a paper towel handy, lol. The e cig takes a little getting used to and there is a learning curve involved. Just be sure, whatever you get, to get extra batteries and atomizers, and as someone else suggested, a usb pass thru if you are on the computer a lot. The initial expense is still cheaper than analogs. Bottom line, I would recommend the 510 over the 901. Look on the forum here, there is a post from applefreak. He sells the 510, and will treat you right. I was a smoker for 35 yrs., now I'm a vaper! Good luck and happy vaping.

Agga40s,

I AM A HEAVY SMOKER - so this will be straight from the "horse's mouth" for you! I smoke 40 to 50 cigarettes a day. Been smoking for 34 years non-stop. Tried every smoking cessation product known to man - nothing worked.

I am on day 4 of e-cigs. Fresh out of the gate this is my experience.

First - some advice.

#1. Take the time and watch the videos posted at the top of the New Members forum. These videos are EXTREMELY helpful. Follow their advice - it's priceless!

#2. Everyone is different. I see so many people say "I quit the first day my e-cig arrived." Well maybe they did, but that doesn't mean you will. I am on day 4 and I have not quit smoking regular cigarettes yet. (See below for more personal info.)

#3. I can guarantee you - without a doubt - that you will crave a real cigarette while smoking your e-cig. There's something about sucking in those 4000 chemicals, carbon monoxide and heavy tar that cannot be replaced by ANYTHING. (Short of a heavy IV morphine drip.)

#4. Keep the liquid topped off in your cartridge and the battery fresh. You will be able to tell when either gets low because it feels like you cannot get a sufficient drag from the e-cig. Keeping it vaping really well is an important key to decreasing the desire for a real cigarette.

#5. Get good liquid. I'm not pushing any specific products - use the Liquid Review forum to get information - but I did not get the best stuff for the first 3 days and thank god I got some new stuff today!!! Much better!

#6. Don't try and smoke the e-cig like you would a regular cig. Experiment with it to find the best draw/drag. (I was dragging way too hard on the poor thing - tried to suck the fiber out of the cartridge - didn't work so good.)

#7. E-cigs do sound complicated but they really aren't. Once you get yours you'll see it's pretty simple.

Now for the good news.
My first day I cut my smoking to 17 cigs. That's a 60% reduction. It just happened. I wasn't really trying. It's just that this e-cig was such a good replacement that I wasn't missing smoking.
Day 2 - smoked 12 cigs. Day 3 - smoked 7 cigs. So far today - 2 cigs.
I can tell you that it wasn't really painful to go to 7 cigs yesterday. You do crave the the real thing but I just go do something else or forget about it and the next thing I know another hour went by and I didn't smoke.

So far this experience has been truly amazing. I have never given up so many cigarettes so easily.
It's not automatic - you do have to work at it a little - but it's the closest thing to replacing smoking that I have ever experienced.

I am truly thrilled and very thankful to all the help and advice from this forum.

Good luck Agga40s!

I smoked 30 butts a day for over 24 years. For the past 2+ weeks, 1 cigarette and 2 drags! Yay e-cigs! My wife is also down from about a pack a day to about 1-2 cigarettes per day. This has not been difficult for my wife and I as long as we have liquid that gives a good throat kick. We get more cravings when we vape smooth juices.
