You don't have to, but it will taste "interesting" at first if you don't. if you're using prefab coils, clean the coil by soaking it in pure grain alcohol or high proof vodka. Water impedes its ability to wick. You can use water, but you have to thoroughly dry it before reuse. Air dry on a paper towel at least overnight, or hit it with a hair dryer. I used to clean before every refill. That was ages ago though. These days i just cannot be bothered, it simply isn't worth the trouble. Honestly,, i don't clean out my tanks for months. Maybe change the cotton when things start to taste a bit funky, maybe a dry burn too. I'm not going to go to all the trouble of stripping down a tank like a Kayfun V4 into dozens of components every time i want to refill it. Besides they don't get dirty !. Although if i'm using a dark liquid things do get pretty gungy, like tar looking crap everywhere. I'd clean it quite often if that's the case. I just stay away from liquids like that though, again i simply cannot be bothered with all that.:D
