It is very serious when we are already fighting a losing battle with the government and big tobacco and the media and all the negative hype over electronic cigarettes. What we DON'T want is for anyone to be able to associate this community and everything it stands for with more negativity. If negative searchwords on google lead people to this site, that will only help solidify all their arguments against us.

I can understand that but when you search and hit this site it will take you directly to the comment and no one advocates anything illegal here. I know that was a smarta$$ comment...but it just seems that the hall monitor pipes in and censors posts very regularly and sometimes I just don't think it's all that necessary.
With THAT said...it's not my post nor my argument so I'll just back out now as I don't really have a dog in this ring. I just got rubbed the wrong way seeing SO MANY spankings being dished out on the posts I've been reading today.

People often can't work out why Moderators do what they do. In fact they have a good reason, even though it may not be obvious to members.

Discussion of mistaking our pastime with the consumption of alternative substances is a popular one round here, and if allowed in full text would have resulted in at least 10,000 mentions of a herbal substance on ECF by now. We have over 100,000 posts per month on ECF, and several thousand top 4 Google search results (with at least a thousand Google #1 search positions). Any result in the top 4 of a popular Google search will result in significant traffic, and have the knock-on effect of getting more links from around the web, resulting in a higher position in search results.

The end result of the power of ECF at Google, and several thousand mentions of a certain herb, would place us at the top of Google searches for that subject.

There are few things that could hurt us as much in the current political situation, where the people with the money are desperate to try and get ecigs killed off or neutered in order to protect their own incomes. They would love to be able to say that ecigs are a are a dual-use device for nicotine and other stuff. Lies and propaganda are the tools of their trade. If ECF helps them to achieve their goal we would have shot ourselves in the foot with a 20mm cannon.

Moderators put in hundreds of hours to protect you and your right to vape, and it is often a thankless task. Just because you don't understand their job gives you no right to attack them.

However if you donated $100 to CASAA this year, you get one free pass to complain needlessly about something :)

LOL Rolygate! Where do I send the money and to whom should I sign it over to? ;)

I hear you loud and clear and understand. I'm crabby tonight and feeling sensitive over a vaping related subject. I certainly do not want the ECF or vaping to be associated with the illegal issues and because I love vaping....I appreciate the efforts to protect the right to do so.

Now....*sigh* I apologize.

I have three hookas in da house. When people see them, they start giggling. But I only smoke shisha (or may I say vape, since there's no burning tobacco). Hookas have... a certain association. Takes a lot of explaining but they keep giggling.

I deal with this on a regular as I sell both hookas and the other pipes at the shop I work at...I explain that hookas are different and are really not used for that but no one listens...back on topic I also sell a device that looks a lot like some of these wooden box mods and I feel I could not see my self vaping in one for the fear it would get confused for what our shop sells. None of the tube ones would make me feel that way...now the plastic box mods just look too much like a ied detonator or something... as a vet that's all I need is to be mistaken for another vet gone bomber...

The moderators on ECF bend over backwards to be nice people with a sense of humor. Some subjects are understandably treated with less humor and illegal substances are one of them.

When I vaped a 510, especially a white one, I got comments about being in a non-smoking area. Once I switched to a black eGo with a cone and a carto with a drip tip, they tell me it looks like a black magic marker and no one even mentions anything, even if I exhale vapor. They just ask me what it is. It's more curiosity than a sense of association with tobacco. It's a lot easier to stealth vape with a larger ecig.

I hope you're joking. Try searching "vaping" and "e-cig" words used plenty here. I only get one hit on the first page with Google and no hits on the first page with Yahoo. If you can't take over the topic on search engines when it's the topic of the forum you certainly wouldn't take over other topics because of mere mentions of words. Search engines don't work like that any more.

This forum is big but not so big it can take over the whole internet with random conversation. There are many other forums out there much bigger that are also having random conversations.

The thought that someone could take the words out of context to spin things in a negative light and claim, "ECF mentions _____ 15,537 times" is valid, the search engine claim, not so much.

Its almost counterintuitive how its easier to stealth vape with a larger pv. I got comments all the time with white 808's and nada with a black silver bullet with a 5ml tank.

You do realize that no one cares if you vape. If you do it with an 808 people think you are sneaking a smoke. Sneak vape with something that doesn't look like a cigarette and they don't care. You could just do it openly too.

I have been propositioned precisely once by someone trying to sell me something illegal because he misunderstood what my PV was. This was at a bar, and it was incredibly obvious that the guy was looking for people to purchase his illicit product, as I was not even close to the only person he made the offer to. Frankly, I'm surprised he wasn't tossed out on his keester.

On the flip side, I have had multiple people ask "is that one of those electronic cigarette things?" curiously, or go "what -is- that, anyhow?" probably about fifteen times just in the last week. Most of the time, it's met with curiosity. Depending on what I'm vaping, sometimes it's met with very eager curiosity.

I was at Disneyland the other day and had someone follow me for a bit because they were trying desperately to figure out what the heck I was "eating". They finally broke down and stopped me to ask what that wonderful smell was. I blame it on the fact that I was vaping something which smells and tastes like those raspberry Zinger snack cakes that a lot of people gobble up as kids. It really, really does taste phenomenally good. And it smells it, too! The person thought it was really cool, and said they were going to look into one, not only to quit smoking, but just because it smelled like a little slice of heaven. And I really had to agree. It is, indeed, a little slice of heaven.

So... realistically, pick up something like a kgo or Riva that doesn't look like a cigarette but also doesn't look like one of the non-liquid vaporizers (it's really easy to avoid ones that do look like those, actually), and vape away. So long as you're friendly and polite in your responses, and you don't try to act sneaky or look suspicious, nobody's going to think you are being suspicious. :)

If I had three hookas in my house I'd be doing more than giggling.

Have you ever had anyone think you were doing (other things) when you were vaping?

I've had people think I was drinking alcohol when I had plastic cup... but I don't drink alcohol often.

I've had people think I was driving drunk when I dropped a cigarette... but I don't drink and drive.

I've had people think I was smoking a cig in a non-smoking area... but I was vaping.

I've done lots of things that were mistaken for other things, usually not paying any attention to what they thought or a quick explanation would make everything okay. I now use a wood box to vape, and so far no one has said a word. My neck of the woods "other things" are not common in plain view, so people just think whatever they want and go on.

I, personally, don't care what people think as long as it's not a police officer.

I've vaped in front of cops a number of times. Last week, I was the tournament director for a dart tournament. For instance, one of the dart players got into an argument with his girlfriend, did some screaming and yelling, and the cops got called. I went out to check on him (do I call him up to play a game? Do I work something out because he's being arrested or banned from the bar?) and I ended up talking to the cops about what had happened. (Not much, unless it happened away from me.) I didn't even think about it. I vape all the time, so as I was talking to them, I was vaping. They didn't say a word about it, and I didn't think about it until later.

Not long ago I saw a cop looking at me as I vaped in a restaurant after I ate. Smoking in that same restaurant would be illegal. He didn't say anything to me.

I suspect that most cops are familiar with vaping. They may not have a lot of experience with it, but I think most of them know what they are.

There is no battle with big tobacco. They could care less. It's Big Pharm that is organizing and paying for most of the negative commentary.

I don't see why my post was edited, I wasn't talking about using drugs

Google. ECF doesn't want vaping to be associated with drugs in any way. If someone Google's <that word> vape and ecf shows up, that would be contrary to that policy. [Edit: Beaten to it...]
Plus, an objective ban on certain words makes it a lot easier on the mods than trying to enforce it subjectively would be.
We all know what you meant. So it's no big deal.

And I've had the same thing. I get a lot more weird or hostile looks when vaping something that looks closer to an analog than I have when I use something that doesn't.

But the main thing is letting people use whatever works for them. A lot of people choose the analog clones because it gives them the same feel they're used to with smoking and makes it easier for them to transition. Mods are mostly to address things that the analog clones don't provide. If an analog clone provides everything a user wants, there's no need to use a mod.

And his worry isn't without merit. If I didn't know what an Ecig mod was and wasn't fairly sure no one would be stupid enough to use one one of the other things openly (the smell would be a dead giveaway), I'd assume it was the other thing before I'd think "electronic cigarette".

Many people take the awareness of Ecigs for granted but there's a lot of places where they're still very rare. Most people have never seen an Ecig at all and most of those who have, have only seen the disposable analog clones or at most, an Ego clone at a mall kiosk. Something like a Provari or Silver Bullet is still an alien concept to most people but Harold and Kumar, Half-Baked and many other things in the media have made the other thing quite familiar.
