Be careful about covering the end on autos, we need air draw from there to get em to work! On that note if I put one of the condoms on the ash cap end, it activates my autos! But of course you can't activate it again until it's uncovered....

I think the most convincing argument for keeping the LED in some form is that it lets us know when the carto is being heated. On that note PURPLE LEDs please! :D

Usually when I get the desire to build something, it's on a Sunday, around 3pm. I generally know that I'm not going to have the motivation to do anything about it later. So, I go to RS and pick up what I can to make what I need/want. If I end up liking it, then I'll place a Digikey order for the good stuff.

I spent Wednesday digging through my attic to find cables and boxes and all kinds of stuff that I have stuffed away. Since my move, I can't find my solder station :(... I'm using a RS 30W and want to poke my eyes out with it. Tomorrow's goal.... find the solder station.

Yes, I agree. I only cup it to see the light relection in my palm. A light color that would be more distinct is what I am after.

I am also an LED lover! How hard would it be to have an led with a push button endcap..in is off, out is on...we really don't need it to look like an ash after all.
My biggest gripe is orange and red lights! besides being ugly they look like cigs.
You guys know me..I would love the lights to match the batts...lol (except for red)
I just cup the end like a pipe when I don't want the light seen.

Actually - actuating the end-cap is a pretty major design change.

The end-cap is a press-fit that is exactly sized. A switch would need to be designed, built, and Q/A'd. You'd need a goodly volume to get anyone to go for it, and it will raise the price a couple dollars by the time it makes it to retail.

I had to run out and check availability and there is a purple led, 100mcd, in an 0603 package available commonly in Shenzhen. So it's a drop-in replacement for the blue or green LEDs that are in my batteries...

As a data-point in your crusade, I too would purchase a purple LED device. Now that my rework station is unpacked, I may have to go ahead and order some purple LEDs and replace one or two of mine.
